TV Review: Last Choir Standing, BBC One, 6.30pm & 8.20pm

acm_gospel_live3_306.jpgThanks to the summer holidays, I’d rather lost track of Last Choir Standing. I’ve missed three weeks and, catching up last night, I felt that something else was missing too.

Last night was the semi-final with four choirs – Revelation, ACM Gospel Choir, Ysgol Glanaethwy and Only Men Aloud – remaining. So three of my favourites (I’m not so crazy about Ysgol Glanaethwy) had made it through.

Are you sitting comfortably? Because this show went on for so long and packed so much in, that even to summarise it is going to take a while. Okay so the introduction: blah blah “Only the strongest 15 survived” blah blah “Five choirs compete for the first two places in our knockout” blah. And finally they’re in the studio, with an audience. Actually, the studio looks great – no expense spared – and now I understand the Last Choir Standing logo: the studio is in the round with tiered seating.

TV Review: Last Choir Standing, BBC One, Saturday 5 July, 7.45pm

If you’ve watched any of these Saturday night shows before, you’ll know exactly what to expect, but, since this one is to find Britain’s best choir, one would hope it would be a tad classier than previous offerings (and infinitely classier than ITV’s Grease Is the Word).

I mainly volunteered to review Last Choir Standing due to my deep love for Nick Knowles, but since I got the all-important shivers from the introduction (the choir singing Mary Mary’s Shackles (Praise You)), I started to suspect I might enjoy it more than anticipated. And I was right.
