EastEnders: Pat Butcher confronted by Derek Branning

Thursday, December 22nd, 2011

EastEnders’ Pat Butcher will be confronted by her gangster nephew Derek Branning on her deathbed.

The Albert Square legend, played by Pam St. Clement, will bow out of the show at Christmas, but while the cause of her death – rumoured to be either in a fire, a heart attack or cancer – is unknown as of yet, during her final few minutes she will have one last blazing row with the Walford bad boy.

Ashen-faced Pat will be lying in bed as Derek (Jamie Foreman) confronts her, with the argument then spilling over as the hardman has another slanging match with Pat’s son, David (Michael French).

In other scenes previewed from the festive episodes, Pat’s granddaughter Bianca (Patsy Palmer) and David are seen searching through her belongings for her funeral details, while a huge fire will sweep through Walford’s Bed and Breakfast.

The dramatic storylines are part of the traditional battle for ratings between the BBC One soap and its ITV1 rival, Coronation Street, although they this year face more competition in the form of the Downton Abbey Christmas special.

An insider told the Daily Mirror newspaper: “The whole Christmas schedule is packed full of high-octane drama in Albert Square. Pam St Clement’s decision to leave has been common knowledge, but nobody will be prepared for the drama about to unfold.

“There are dozens of twists and surprises, and fans will be glued to their seats.”

EastEnders: fiery End for Pat Evans as B+B goes up in flames

Wednesday, September 21st, 2011

EastEnders’ Pat Evans is set to die in a fire. The hard-nosed matriarch – who has been played by Pam St Clement for 25 years – will exit the BBC One soap when the Bed and Breakfast goes up in flames and rips through Albert Square, which will coincide with the return of her step-son Ricky Butcher (Sid Owen) and his wife Bianca (Patsy Palmer).

A replica of the hotel is set to be created at the programme’s Elstree Studios in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, for the scenes, which will air at Christmas. A source told the Daily Mirror newspaper: “The last time EastEnders built something on this set was when they set fire to the Queen Vic last year. It is only used when they need to film fires and explosions.

“They want Pam’s character to go out with a bang. The script is so top secret even she doesn’t know how Pat is going to go yet. But she will be killed off.”

However, soap bosses have refused to confirm the details of Pam’s exit.  An EastEnders spokesman said: “There has been a lot of speculation about Pat’s departure. We are not going to comment as we do not want to spoil it for viewers.”

The 69-year-old actress previously said: “I have enjoyed 25-and-a-half wonderful years in EastEnders creating the character of Pat, but feel it’s time to hang up her earrings.

“Leaving the EastEnders family will be akin to a bereavement. But I’m looking forward to the other work and life opportunities that I will have the time to pursue.”

Pat Evans/Butcher leaves EastEnders after 25 years – the end of an earring

Friday, July 8th, 2011

Pat Evans, formerly Butcher, is to hang up her earrings after 25 years in EastEnders.

Pam St Clement, the soap’s second longest serving actor, said: “I have enjoyed 25 and a half wonderful years in EastEnders creating the character of Pat but feel it’s time to hang up her earrings.” But what will she do now, is Clement quitting acting?

She responded to rumours that she was quitting acting with, “Leaving the EastEnders ‘family’ will be akin to a bereavement, but I’m looking forward to other work and life opportunities that I will have the time to pursue.”

Her exit comes a year after the departure of Barbara Windsor, who played Pat’s love rival Peggy Mitchell. The feuding pair came to blows in several catfights in the Queen Vic, often prompted by Pat’s love life. She was married four times – most memorably to Frank Butcher played by the late Mike Reid

Executive Producer Bryan Kirwood said, “Over the years we’ve seen her develop from a shrew into a matriarch, and Pat’s colour, warmth and steel have given EastEnders some of its most memorable stories. Pam will be missed by everyone in Walford.”

Clement is the second longest serving cast member after Adam Woodyatt on the show.
