Dancing on Ice: Jason Gardiner angry at having to apologise to Karen Barber

Thursday, February 10th, 2011

Another day and another update to the Jason Gardiner vs Karen Barber fight.

Today rumours are circulating that the “bitchy judge” was apparently furious after being forced by Dancing On Ice bosses to apologise to Karen. He had to utter the “S” word after asking the head coach and formal panelist on Sunday who would listen to what she had to say.

Following the results show Twitter and fan forums were inundated with angry viewers demanding he apologise. Ofcom also received complaints forcing Philip Schofield to defend Jason.

A source told the Daily Mail: “Jason was furious he had been made to apologise.

“He kept saying: `Everyone in Britain has gone PC mad. Everyone in the UK is so scared of being offended, it’s going to get to the point where you won’t be able to say anything on TV at all’.”

And despite ITV receiving over 3000 complaints regarding the incident Jason has been assured he will not lose his job.

He wrote on his Twitter page: “Thank you to all of you who have sent me kind support during this rather precarious time.

“But there are others who are very disturbed indeed.”

A spokesperson confirmed: “Jason has been spoken to by producers and that is the end of the matter.”

However, ITV1 executives reportedly didn’t hesitate to reprimand the judge, and told him his behaviour was “completely out of order”.

Philip Schofield defends Dancing On Ice judge Jason Gardiner on Twitter

Tuesday, February 8th, 2011

Philip Schofield has had a little bit of a rant on his Twitter page.

The Dancing on Ice presenter has decided to defend “nasty” judge Jason after a row broke out between him and head coach Karen Barber during the live shows on Sunday.

Viewers were appalled by the behaviour and many took it upon themselves to complain to Ofcom demanding he be sacked.

However Philip decided that the row had gone too far, writing on his Twitter page: “Right, enough. Please do not expect me to condemn Jason or to expect his sacking!”

“Its crazy Ofcom have been swamped by complaints, why is this now the first port of call for ‘The Outraged’ Why? No matter what the misdemeanour, is the general howl ‘sack ‘em’?

“Yes, a disagreement between 2 people spilled on to the telly, but it’s not the first row to be broadcast and it won’t be the last. If every tiny thing that might offend someone somewhere was cut, there’d be nothing to watch!! I’m a big fan of Karen & Jason, I don’t think they’ll be friends, but they should BOTH be on DOI.”

He added those offended by his Tweets should also go to Ofcom – don’t he was only joking.

Iggy Pop’s Glastonbury race remark lands BBC in Ofcom trouble

The permanently bare-chested Iggy Pop has dumped the BBC in further trouble after the Corporation received complaints for the singer’s race word spoken during this year’s television coverage of the Glastonbury Festival. Interviewed after performing with his band, The Stooges, the wild man rocker discussed visiting “paki” shops in Camden, a comment that the BBC apologised for a day later. However with two complaints registered by Ofcom in the immediate aftermath, it was considered too little, too late.

Ofcom ruled that the BBC “failed in its responsibility to ensure the offence caused was justified by the context”, while they have also been reprimanded for not reacting quickly enough. The BBC responded that the American musician “was probably unaware that a term commonly used 30 years ago had now passed out of polite usage” and that “Iggy Pop is one of the wildest men in rock music and, as such, he has a built-in content advisory warning.” The fact that they are even defending the situation upsets me. I can’t help but wonder that if other racial slurs had been used, they would have been much quicker to condemn the star.

Viewers complain over chef’s comments on Hell’s Kitchen

Tuesday, September 11th, 2007

HellsKitchen128.jpg

This year’s Hell’s Kitchen seems to be serving up more than just soufflés and questionable meat with Ofcom reporting that complaints have been made against chef Marco Pierre White’s use of the word ‘pikey.’ The voicing of the derogatory term for travellers by the culinary motor-mouth sparked a huge row with ex-Blue warbler Lee Ryan, who protested: “I have a lot of friends who are travellers… and I know they don’t like being called pikeys.”

The confrontation led to Ryan hanging up his apron and now the ITV1 reality show could be in for more complaints after the homophobic ranting of Jim Davidson. Calling fellow contestant and openly gay Brian Dowling a shirt-lifter, the washed-up ‘comic’ exited the kitchen. This departure helped the show to 4.5million viewers, though the real aftermath of such nasty comments is yet to be felt. Will it be worth it for ITV?

Harry Hill’s TV Burp rapped by Ofcom

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

Oh, how I love Harry Hill’s TV Burp. His recreation of Emmerdale’s opening sequence by panning a camera over the top of broccoli stalks was TV magic. However, our Harry is in trouble as his Saturday night show has had its naughty wrists slapped for airing scenes considered too graphic for a tea-time audience.

The offending episode was broadcast back in March and featured Bear Grylls (also making headlines at the moment) biting the head off a frog and cooking a turtle alive. Of course, with Bear’s authenticity currently under scrutiny (why? see here), he may not have even performed such icky stunts, still Ofcom are not happy.
