QI: Jingle Bells

Stephen ‘National Treasure’ Fry hosts a Christmassy edition of the show with guests Sarah Millican, Danny Baker, Phill Jupitus and regular sidekick Alan Davies. Go on, admit it, the show has now been on TV for so long that most of the things you know you learned from QI.

The Snowman And The Snowdog

Altogether now: ‘We’re walking in the aaaaair. With a dog’. The long-anticipated sequel to The Snowman features a snowman and his dog. Or something. We’ve not properly looked into it because we don’t want the surprise spoilt. It’ll be ace whatever happens.

Friday Night Dinner

Christmas with the Goodmans – a truly nerve-tingling proposition. Robert Popper’s magnificent sitcom gets its first festive special, if you’ve not got into FND yet this is the perfect opportunity.

Doctor Who

You’d have thought it impossible for Doc Who’s producers to replace Karen Gillan but they seem to have done a fantastic job with Louise Coleman. Here she makes her debut proper in a storyline that sees her and the doctor take on some funny/ fearsome-looking snowmen.

Call The Midwife

Miranda Hart, Jessica Raine, Jenny Agutter et al are back for some Xmas midwifery antics. TV’s most visceral period drama follows the midwives of 50’s East London as they deliver a load of post war sprogs called Carol and Noel. Probably.

Downton Abbey

Xmas. Downton. Downton. Xmas. Was there ever a time when these two words were not synonymous? One day they will stop making Downton Abbey. Now there’s a thought to chill the soul.

Let’s be honest, the Royle Family Xmas special has always been a bit hit and miss. But we’ll all still be sat in front of it in the hope that it’s a vintage year. After all, it’s the Royle Family, innit?

BBC and ITV confirm their Christmas Day schedules

Although these days there are a million TV channels and programmes can be recorded or viewed on catch-up with ease, there is still a great deal of interest in what the BBC and ITV have got planned for us on Christmas Day. Well today we found out.

The BBC lead with the now-traditional Doctor Who special ‘The Snowmen’ at 5:15PM (featuring the introduction proper of new assistant Jenna-Louise Coleman) and then a special edition of Strictly Come Dancing.

The big clash of the night is at 8:45 when the BBC have put a festive edition of Call The Midwife against the Xmas Downton Abbey. Downton will win that one.

Then everyone will switch back to BBC1 at 9:45 for the Royle Family Xmas special, which apparently feature Dave (Craig Cash) pitching an idea on Dragons’ Den.

Earlier in the day ITV have a cartoon double bill either side of the Queen’s speech with Toy Story and Tangled. And then a You’ve Been Framed Christmas special and something called Paul O’Grady’s For The Love Of Dogs, which sounds awful.

Elsewhere, the BBC have Boxing Day Xmas specials of unfunny comedy Miranda and even-unfunnier Mrs Brown’s Boys and the final ever Merlin will be shown on Christmas Eve.

TV Review: Grey’s Anatomy, Living, Thursday 13 September, 10pm

After the mid-season high of the ferry crash saga, Grey’s Anatomy seemed to suffer a bit of a low last night. It had invested so much energy and intensity into the three episode story-line that it felt a bit tired and exhausted afterwards, as though it needed to put its feet up and have a nice sit down. Sadly for us, the show limped its way through a rather slow and sorry hour that saw me roll my eyes in annoyance on more than one occasion.

Now that her mother is no more, Meredith began to accept her other side of the family: sad-sack dad Thatcher and perky step-mum Susan. The uncomfortable attempts at family bonding were dreary and non-eventful, a pale shadow of the emotionally fraught relationship between Meredith and mother Ellis. Why they killed off this character I don’t really understand. Did they think they had played it for all dramatic possibilities or did they simply want to give Meredith a whole new set of domestic dilemmas? Regardless, the new alternative is going to have to pick up speed it if hopes to emulate any of the former relationship’s intrigue.

ABC website quizzes Grey’s Anatomy fans: Which female character are you?

For us ladies interested in all things Grey’s Anatomy, American network ABC have just the thing: a ‘which character are you most like?’ quiz. I know that the show has some male fans, but sadly the quiz only includes the six central female characters: Meredith, Cristina, Izzie, Miranda, Callie and Addison. Maybe if you boys fancy yourselves with long pretty hair you could have a go, or perhaps invent your own with the male leads. Bigoted and bullying? Aha – you must be Isaiah Washington!

The questions tax you on your attitude to work, children and family and pictures of the lovely ladies pop up to entice you. Are you ambitious and work-obsessed like Cristina or a ‘people person’ (*puke*) like Izzie? Always prepared to sacrifice myself for the greater good at the Scoop, I had a quick stab at the quiz myself. And who am I? Thankfully not Meredith. TV Review: Grey’s Anatomy, Living TV, Thursday 2 August, 10pm

I was not aware, until I snuggled on my sofa at 10pm last night and flicked over to Living TV, that Grey’s Anatomy was to be a double-billed affair. Night-time me rejoiced at an extra hour of Seattle Grace hospital, while morning me groaned at the later-than-planned bedtime and inevitable sleepiness the next day. Well, happily night-time me won out – and I’m pleased she did, as the two episodes were pretty non-stop.

With so many characters and so many long-established storylines, GA has been sagging under its own weight in recent weeks. Thankfully, those that had been neglected for too long were finally given their chance to flex their acting chops. Most notably, McSteamy. Since his arrival in Seattle, the plastic surgeon has whined about coffee, been rude to his interns and slept with both Addison and Callie – and that’s about it. All until yesterday. For a hefty chunk, he remained unchanged – in the background and repeating old behaviours. I was once again lamenting the waste of an intriguing character, until the bombshell: he was angry with Addison for having aborted their baby.

TV Review: Grey’s Anatomy, LivingTV, Thursday 26 July, 10pm

And so second in my double bill of doctors, comes Grey’s Anatomy. I’ve previously had a whinge about the tendency for the Grey’s writers to overlook and neglect some of their more interesting characters and again, last night they were guilty as charged. As much as I love this show, they need to trim their cast (with Isaiah Washington fired and Kate Walsh given her own spin-off, maybe things will look up), as an hour episode reduces some to mere background players.

Again Sloan was two-dimensional. He got to choose which intern could work with him for the day and opted for Izzie, as she would be “good to look at.” However, unlike her predecessor Alex, Izzie wasn’t prepared to become a lackey for the egotistical plastic surgeon and refused to oblige his orders for coffee. Quite predictably, Izzie’s uncompromising feistiness impressed Sloan and after what has seemed like years on the sidelines observing, Sloan allowed Izzie to scrub in and watch at close range a difficult operation on conjoined twins.
