Wiggins wins BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award, wears double-breasted Mark Powell suit

Monday, December 17th, 2012

Via Brandish.tv

It seemed a pretty much done deal last night that Tour de France/Olympic Time Trial Champion would win the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year. So in this parish at least it was as much about the suit he chose to wore as it was scooping the award.

Wiggins plumped for a bespoke velvet (very on trend) double-breasted suit made by Soho tailor Mark Powell. Wiggins has worn a lot of Powell’s clothes before – at the GQ awards in September, for example, he wore another Powell double breasted suit this time in grey.

Powell is a London-based tailor who has made bespoke suits for among others – George Clooney, Harrison Ford, Mick Jagger and David Bowie. Powell has worked with brands in the past including M&S and has recently launched a collection of eyewear. He says of the eyewear

‘My new ready-to-wear range, comprising 12 styles, is very retro but with a contemporary twist. A lot of designers are doing this at the moment, but mine is a nicer version.’

But then he could say that about his suits too.

If you do fancy one Powell has a ready to wear range, including some rather lovely double breasted jackets here.

Will and Kate beat Jonny’s drop goal to win TV’s most uplifting moment

Thursday, May 3rd, 2012

Will and Kate’s balcony kiss from the 2011 Royal Wedding has topped a poll of the most uplifting British TV moments from the last ten years.

In research released today to celebrate ten years of Freeview, the landmark moment topped the poll, narrowly ahead of Jonny Wilkinson’s World Cup winning drop-goal in 2003.

Other notable moments in the Top 20 list included Susan Boyle’s first appearance in Britain’s Got Talent in 2009 (7th), Tim and Dawn’s “kiss” in the final episode of the office in 2003 (9th), and Freddie Flintoff’s moment of true sportsmanship, when he consoled Brett Lee at the end of the Edgbaston test match during the epic Ashes series of 2005 (10th).

Britain’s Got Talent, which is currently doing battle in the ratings with The Voice, received a boost as it was voted the UK’s favourite TV programme of the last ten years ahead of Doctor Who, while – strangely – Emmerdale topped the list of soaps, finishing ahead of Coronation Street and EastEnders.

The research also gauged peoples’ views of British television; a fifth of Brits believe that British TV has never been better.  And nearly four out of ten of those over the age of 45 believe that British TV is currently the best in the world (39%), compared to a third of adults overall.

Despite technical innovation in TV over the last ten years, the pull of the major TV event still appeals to viewers. Nearly three out of ten people like to watch programmes live, at the time of broadcast.

The research coincides with the launch of  Freeview’s new online game show, The Generosity Game, featuring Jon Culshaw. Viewers can play the game at www.freeview.co.uk.

OnePoll conducted the research in April 2012, polling 2,000 adults across the UK.

Pippa Middleton to appear on Strictly Come Dancing?

Monday, June 27th, 2011

Pippa Middleton at the wedding of her sister to Prince William

Pippa Middleton has been offered a five-figure sum to appear on Strictly Come Dancing.

BBC One bosses are reportedly willing to go to “any lengths” to have the 27-year-old, who shot to fame after showing off her shapely physique in a figure-hugging bridesmaid’s dress at sister Kate’s wedding to Prince William, appear on the upcoming series celebrity dancing show.

Furthermore, it is hoped having Pippa appear in a number of skimpy costumes could help Strictly to win the ratings battle against ITV1′s The X Factor.

A BBC insider explained: “Pippa has become almost as famous as Kate since the wedding. It would be a huge coup to get her and give the show global appeal.”

While Pippa is said to be a huge fan of Strictly and keen to appear on the show, she is, however, determined not to “embarrass” her royal sister.

A friend added to The Sun newspaper: “She’s a bit overwhelmed by all the attention and is considering her next move very carefully. She is conscious that her sister is going to be queen one day and is determined not to do anything embarrassing.

“But she loves Strictly and if she was sure her appearance would be handled correctly she’d be keen to slip into sequins.”

Strictly Come Dancing professional Erin Boag recently admitted she is keen to perform alongside Prince Harry in the new series of the BBC One show.

She said: “I wouldn’t mind Prince Harry as my dancing partner. I tried phoning him the other day but he must have been busy.”

Phillip Schofield to cover the wedding of Kate Middleton and William for ITV

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2011

It’s going to be the event of the year, so who better to cover the royal wedding than the much loved Phillip Schofield?

According to reports the Dancing On Ice and This Morning presenter will front the coverage of Kate and Will’s big day for ITV

He will also anchor the coverage with News At Ten presenter Julie Etchingham, while other ITV News presenters including Mark Austin, Alastair Stewart and Mary Nightingale will also feature on the day.

Huw Edwards will front the BBC’s coverage for the event that will take place on the 29 April. However, those hoping to see Wills and Kate in 3D will be disappointed to hear these plans have been scrapped because the cameras needed for this technology are far too bulky.
