I knew it was wrong of me to get my hopes up. The season finale of Grey’s Anatomy was, like the second half of the series, a complete mess. It made a half-assed attempt to resolve some of the long-running plots but essentially provided no closure, little suspense and lots of groans. The combination of hospital action and personal sagas, which has been so deftly handled in previous outings, was pretty shambolic and all-in-all it was very depressing. Urgh.
So here’s what happened – the good, the bad and the very bad. And unfortunately for us fans, there was a lot of the latter two, and very little of the former. Again.

We usually like to give a bit of advance warning when selecting programmes for our ‘set the video’ category, but such has been my utter disinterest in recent Grey’s Anatomy offerings that I completely forgot that tonight’s instalment is, in fact, the last in the series. With that realisation, I come to you as a GA fan so that we can cross our fingers, silently pray and do all that we can to hope that the season three climax is a marked improvement on the show’s recent slump. And so, as we hit the home stretch, how do we think it will end? Will Alex admit to his feelings for Jane Doe/ Eva/ Rebecca? Will the tiresome love triangle between Callie, Izzie and George finally come to an end and will the interns have passed their exams?
One of the problems that GA has developed is its swollen cast. Each character cannot possible be given the screen time they deserve and so, rather than more stream-lined efforts with smaller casts and more focused story-telling, the show desperately strives to cram in everyone and everything. All this means that some sagas will inevitably go unresolved tonight, and most probably bleed into season four, but there are at least two that require immediate attention: the exits of Addison and Burke.

After last week’s less than subtle introduction to Private Practice, the upcoming Addison-based spin-off show, it was back to Seattle Grace for the penultimate episode in this faltering season of surgical shenanigans. The interns were busy preparing to take their intern exams, Burke was fretting over his upcoming nuptials to Cristina and Meredith had just lost her step-mother. It’s all in a days work for this lot.
The Alex/Jane Doe plot dragged its heels for another week, with the amnesiac revealing that she had regained her memory. She was called Rebecca Pope, had left her dull husband when injured in the ferry crash and had no intention of reclaiming a life she was happy to have left behind. Alex was stunned by the news, clearly hurt that she had concealed the information from him, as their patient/doctor relationship grew ever more complicated.

If I was in a generous mood I might claim that last night’s Grey’s Anatomy was an improvement on recent episodes. Sadly, I’m not and it wasn’t. Thankfully there was slightly less of the George/Callie/Izzie love triangle and a bit more of the neglected characters – Bailey, Sloan and Addison, but such slight changes are not enough to save a show dangerously on the slide.
Obviously I still watch it and will continue to do so. I understand that even at its worst it is still superior to the soaps, reality shows and makeover drivel that dominate the airwaves. When I berate GA for being poor and disappointing, I’m not comparing to this ropey fare but against the high standards it has set itself. This is the show that introduced the prefixing of ‘Mc’ into our language with McDreamy and McSteamy, established Katherine Heigl as Hollywood’s new golden girl and caused a colossal row over the other ‘f’ word. It has shown us bombs in bodies, ferry crashes at harbours and countless illicit romances. Come on Grey’s – give us what we want!

And the slump continues in an episode appropriately titled ‘Time After Time’. Sure there are the odd moments that restore your faith, such as Sloan offering to be the Chief’s ‘wing-man’ as he re-enters the dating game – but these are sadly few and far between. Grey’s Anatomy has clearly hit a wall in its third season and so we are being treated to slow-moving stories, uninspired repetition and Meredith whining at her well-meaning stepmother – lucky us.
The Karev/ Jane Doe plot and the George/ Callie/ Izzie love triangle are the main offenders. They drag on predictably. What have we done to deserve such tedious story-lines? Once upon a time I looked forward to my weekly dose of action from Seattle Grace, now it really is like a trip to the doctors – lots of waiting around for something to happen until the inevitably vague verdict and the feeling of ‘why did I bother?’ Why has the pace slowed to that of a snail’s? And why are the more interesting characters (Addison, Bailey, Sloan) constantly being side-lined to make room for the hysterical playground antics of the others? If there is a tonic to cure the malaise that has enveloped GA it better arrive soon – as there are only five episodes left of the season and I don’t know that I can make it until the end.

After the mid-season high of the ferry crash saga, Grey’s Anatomy seemed to suffer a bit of a low last night. It had invested so much energy and intensity into the three episode story-line that it felt a bit tired and exhausted afterwards, as though it needed to put its feet up and have a nice sit down. Sadly for us, the show limped its way through a rather slow and sorry hour that saw me roll my eyes in annoyance on more than one occasion.
Now that her mother is no more, Meredith began to accept her other side of the family: sad-sack dad Thatcher and perky step-mum Susan. The uncomfortable attempts at family bonding were dreary and non-eventful, a pale shadow of the emotionally fraught relationship between Meredith and mother Ellis. Why they killed off this character I don’t really understand. Did they think they had played it for all dramatic possibilities or did they simply want to give Meredith a whole new set of domestic dilemmas? Regardless, the new alternative is going to have to pick up speed it if hopes to emulate any of the former relationship’s intrigue.

Last week’s ending to Grey’s Anatomy was just great. If I was a cartoon character (which I’m not altogether sure that I’m not on some days), my jaw would have hit the floor and my eyes poked out on stalks as Meredith was told by Denny Duquette and bomb disposal expert Dylan that she, like them, was dead. The revelation was an incredible finale and I then spent the next seven days in eager anticipation of when GA would be back on my telly.
Picking up where the second part finished, we rejoined Meredith and some other notable dead folk (Liz, her mother’s former nurse, Bonnie one of her most notable patients and her dog, Doc) as she struggled to come to terms with what was happening. True to his training, Dylan was all for explaining things to Meredith in a forceful, direct fashion but Denny intervened, believing a more compassionate, understanding route was possible. Dylan raged that they were running out of time and couldn’t waste a moment, while Meredith looked on confused. What were they talking about and why was time of the essence?

The personal lives of the folk at Seattle Grace hospital took a back seat last night when a mass trauma assumed centre stage. A ferry crashed at a local dock and the interns were dispatched to aid the injured in what was part one of a three part story arc. Were the interns ready for such a large-scale tragedy and who could be in danger themselves?
Still upset after last week’s emotionally bruising encounter with her mother Ellis, Meredith was found by Derek almost drowning herself in the bath. She steadfastly refuted that she was doing anything drastic and insisted that she didn’t need him to save her, but Derek grew increasingly suspicious that all was not well. It was this dark mood over Meredith that deterred Cristina from sharing with her the happy news of her engagement to Burke, though with Sloan having overheard Burke telling Derek, the hospital was soon abuzz with the upcoming nuptials.

Now half-way through this, its third season, Grey’s Anatomy is really starting to hit its stride. With both Burke and George proposing to their lady loves last week and Izzie donating her inheritance to Miranda’s campaign for a free clinic – there were big changes a foot at Seattle Grace Hospital.
The biggest of these was the unexpected lucidity of Meredith’s mother, former medical luminary Ellis Grey. Afflicted with Alzheimer’s, Ellis’ condition had deprived her of properly knowing her daughter for the past five year, a truth that she took to heart. Upon learning that she had the illness, she was keen to familiarise herself with the Meredith of today and compensate for lost time. Sadly, she found that her daughter failed to meet her expectations and painfully dismissed her as ordinary.

Grey’s Anatomy managed to resolve a few of its long-standing sagas in last week’s double-bill, and so yesterday’s episode felt like a clean slate in many ways. Of course, there was still plenty of action at Seattle Grace but thankfully Meredith was no longer snoring and Izzie had cashed her cheque.
Miranda had a new cause, that of a free clinic. This idea garnered zilch interest from the quartet of big-name surgeons (Burke, Shepherd, Montgomery and Sloan) and it almost seemed like she couldn’t articulate herself why it was such an important project. Finally, moments away from the episode’s end she unleashed her reasoning for the clinic to the unimpressed docs: to have something to believe in as once she had believed in each of them. Her tactics of shame worked and they signed letters of support without another word. This left funding as the final obstacle in her path to success, a hurdle easily overcome with a little help from resident money-bags, Izzie.

I was not aware, until I snuggled on my sofa at 10pm last night and flicked over to Living TV, that Grey’s Anatomy was to be a double-billed affair. Night-time me rejoiced at an extra hour of Seattle Grace hospital, while morning me groaned at the later-than-planned bedtime and inevitable sleepiness the next day. Well, happily night-time me won out – and I’m pleased she did, as the two episodes were pretty non-stop.
With so many characters and so many long-established storylines, GA has been sagging under its own weight in recent weeks. Thankfully, those that had been neglected for too long were finally given their chance to flex their acting chops. Most notably, McSteamy. Since his arrival in Seattle, the plastic surgeon has whined about coffee, been rude to his interns and slept with both Addison and Callie – and that’s about it. All until yesterday. For a hefty chunk, he remained unchanged – in the background and repeating old behaviours. I was once again lamenting the waste of an intriguing character, until the bombshell: he was angry with Addison for having aborted their baby.
