TV Burp to continue without Harry Hill?

Wednesday, December 21st, 2011

TV Burp could carry on without Harry Hill. The comedian quit the show earlier this year – complaining that the ITV1 programme had left him feeling “suicidal” – but producers Avalon are keen for it to continue and are now looking for a replacement.

Funnymen Lee Mack, Al ‘Pub Landlord’ Murray and Russell Kane have all been touted as successors to Harry, who quit Avalon and turned down a £1 million pay rise to stay. A source told the Daily Mirror newspaper: “They’re desperate to keep the show on air as it earns them a fortune from ITV, but the debacle surrounding Harry has left everyone bruised.”

However, Harry recently admitted he won’t rule out another series of Harry Hill’s TV Burp, which is a comic review of the previous week’s TV highlights. When asked if he would quit in 2012, Harry said: “I think it’s likely. I’ve been doing it for 10 years and I’ve done more than 100 shows. I’ll certainly be taking a year off doing it and I’ll see how it goes. But it’s not like I’m saying I’ll never do it again.

“It takes up six months of my year and that doesn’t give me enough time to pursue anything else.”

TRIC Award winners and style

Wednesday, March 9th, 2011

TV stars hit the town last night to celebrate the Television And Radio Industries Club (TRIC) Awards.

And there were some lucky winners. Chris Evans picked up two awards for his BBC Radio 2 show, while EastEnders star Jessie Wallace won TV Soap Personality for her role as Kat Moon, beating off competition from Hollyoaks’ Jennifer Metcalfe and Coronation Street star Sally Dynevor who plays Sally Webster.

Period drama Downton Abbey picked up the HD Drama Programme of the Year award and BBC ballroom show Strictly Come Dancing won the award for TV Reality Programme.

Long-running quiz A Question Of Sport won the special award and Coronation Street was crowned TV Soap of the Year. Gary Lineker won the Sports Presenter award for the second year running, while Harry Hill beat off stiff competition from Top Gear’s Jeremy Clarkson and Chatty Man host Alan Carr to win TV Personality Of The Year.

It was also good news for Top Gear, which won Best Entertainment Programme, while Corrie “lesbians” Brooke Vincent and Sacha Parkinson, got the Best Soap gong.

What to watch this weekend

Friday, January 7th, 2011

It’s almost time to get that takeaway menu and beer out and celebrate the weekend. Therefore I’ve put together a pick of all the best TV out there, after all in January staying in is the new going out.

Friday
BBC One 9pm Hustle
It may a bit “out there” but Hustle is a fun watch. It features a bunch of con artists enjoying a life of big-money scams in a glamorous, high-rolling version of London.

Saturday
BBC One 6:30 Wipeout
Everyone loves to see some sporting (I use the word loosely) mishaps and this fitness show filmed in Argentina – we assume safety laws didn’t permit it over here – is a great way to kick start that couch potato night.

BBC One 7pm The Magicians
Comedian Lenny Henry presents the magic contest in which sleight of hand artist Chris Korn is joined by Total Wipeout presenter Amanda Byram, master illusionist Luis de Matos teams up with Dragons’ Den entrepreneur Peter Jones, and conjurors Barry and Stuart pair up with comedy actor and musician Ade Edmondson in a battle in front of a studio audience to prove who is the best act.

BBC One 9pm Come Fly With Me.
You can’t miss Matt Lucas and David Walliam’s series which mocks the airport reality shows. Hilarious sketches that’ll cheer you up no end.

BBC 2 8pm Shooting the Hollywood Stars

If you want to get arty then flick over to BBC2 where fashion and celebrity photographer Rankin re-creates well-known images of film stars and explores the history of his profession in Hollywood. It’s a great watch for photo fanatics out there.

ITV 6:30 TV Burp
Harry Enfield’s TV burp may have gone down hill but die hard fans won’t stop watching. This one is for those out there.

ITV 8pm Take me out
The show goes like this: Women line up to find man, man comes out, women turn off lights if they don’t like him and then again after they’ve found out a bit more. Those with lights on are then judged by man who turns off the lights of those he doesn’t like. Picks a date and they go away together. Like a modern day Blind Date, without the er, blind spot.

Sunday
BBC 2 9pm Arctic with Bruce Parry
Bruce Parry this week goes to Greenland and one of its last remaining hunting communities. Bruce wants to know how the melting icecaps are affecting Inuit people. Later, he heads south to investigate the country’s burgeoning mining industry where the melting ice has revealed metal-rich rock.

ITV 6:30pm Dancing on Ice
And it’s back. C list celebs team up with professional skaters to compete for a prize. This year Kerry Katona features on the show.

Alex Zane, Lenny Henry, Richard & Judy – why would we want to watch YouTube clips on TV?

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

alex_zane.gifTV on the internet is a great thing. 4OD and BBC iPlayer are brilliant, and it’s very handy when people upload American shows onto a video sharing site before it’s shown in the UK (not that I would touch such legally dubious resources, *cough*). My problem is not with TV on the internet.

No, my problem is with the internet on television; shows such as Lennyhenry.tv, Alex Zane’s Rude Tube, and the “Funny 5″ section on Richard & Judy. I think Lily Allen and Friends may also have included web clips in it, but I never bothered watching Lily Allen and Friends, I’m not that desperate.

The shows are essentially the same — a comedian presents a variety of popular clips from YouTube and provides a commentary on them. It’s sort of like You’ve Been Framed, except — get this — even worse.

Harry Hill to remake Beadle’s About

Thursday, August 9th, 2007

harry-hill-tv-burp.jpg

Do you remember Beadle’s About? It involved that cheeky wag Jeremy Beadle playing hilarious pranks on members of the general public and was a complete hoot. The madcap hi-jinks would involve dumping manure on someone’s lawn or pranging their car – y’know, comedy gold that has drink spurting out of your nostrils or your granny having a stroke upon watching it. It was that good.

Well, such a brilliant idea couldn’t be neglected for long as The Sun reports that TV pranking is to be given the kiss of life. Comedian Harry Hill is to administer the mouth-to-mouth with his interpretation of the established candid camera format being produced by the people behind his TV Burp show, Avalon. If your sides are starting to split at the mere thought of planning a prank on one of your mates, an email address has been set up for wannabe Beadles to contact. If this sounds like you, email pranks@avalonuk.com with your contact details and just wait for the laughs to begin. If this doesn’t sound like you – congratulations, you have a brain cell.

Harry Hill’s TV Burp rapped by Ofcom

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

Oh, how I love Harry Hill’s TV Burp. His recreation of Emmerdale’s opening sequence by panning a camera over the top of broccoli stalks was TV magic. However, our Harry is in trouble as his Saturday night show has had its naughty wrists slapped for airing scenes considered too graphic for a tea-time audience.

The offending episode was broadcast back in March and featured Bear Grylls (also making headlines at the moment) biting the head off a frog and cooking a turtle alive. Of course, with Bear’s authenticity currently under scrutiny (why? see here), he may not have even performed such icky stunts, still Ofcom are not happy.
