TV Review: Grey’s Anatomy (season 3 finale), Living, Thursday 25 October, 10pm

I knew it was wrong of me to get my hopes up. The season finale of Grey’s Anatomy was, like the second half of the series, a complete mess. It made a half-assed attempt to resolve some of the long-running plots but essentially provided no closure, little suspense and lots of groans. The combination of hospital action and personal sagas, which has been so deftly handled in previous outings, was pretty shambolic and all-in-all it was very depressing. Urgh.

So here’s what happened – the good, the bad and the very bad. And unfortunately for us fans, there was a lot of the latter two, and very little of the former. Again.

After last week’s less than subtle introduction to Private Practice, the upcoming Addison-based spin-off show, it was back to Seattle Grace for the penultimate episode in this faltering season of surgical shenanigans. The interns were busy preparing to take their intern exams, Burke was fretting over his upcoming nuptials to Cristina and Meredith had just lost her step-mother. It’s all in a days work for this lot.

The Alex/Jane Doe plot dragged its heels for another week, with the amnesiac revealing that she had regained her memory. She was called Rebecca Pope, had left her dull husband when injured in the ferry crash and had no intention of reclaiming a life she was happy to have left behind. Alex was stunned by the news, clearly hurt that she had concealed the information from him, as their patient/doctor relationship grew ever more complicated.

Desperate Housewives joke offends Filipino community

Thursday, October 4th, 2007

The housewives better not be planning any trips to the Philippines soon. The suburban comedy/ drama has just returned for its fourth season in the States and has already upset the Filipino community with a flippant joke mocking their country’s medical education. The slur occurred when Teri Hatcher’s character Susan Mayer, shocked at her doctor’s suggestion that she might be going through the menopause, demanded to see his diplomas “just to make sure they aren’t from some school in the Philippines”.

The programme’s network, ABC, has issued a formal apology after an online petition with nearly 53,000 names called for immediate action. The stink has even reached political circles, with Francisco Dugue III, the country’s Health Secretary claiming he will contact the show’s producers expressing his nation’s “vehement protest”. ABC are said to be considering removing the offensive gag before it airs again, which would mean that us UK viewers only see the cleaned-up version. Still, it all sounds like a lot of fuss over nothing – I could have told Teri she was due the menopause soon.

And the slump continues in an episode appropriately titled ‘Time After Time’. Sure there are the odd moments that restore your faith, such as Sloan offering to be the Chief’s ‘wing-man’ as he re-enters the dating game – but these are sadly few and far between. Grey’s Anatomy has clearly hit a wall in its third season and so we are being treated to slow-moving stories, uninspired repetition and Meredith whining at her well-meaning stepmother – lucky us.

The Karev/ Jane Doe plot and the George/ Callie/ Izzie love triangle are the main offenders. They drag on predictably. What have we done to deserve such tedious story-lines? Once upon a time I looked forward to my weekly dose of action from Seattle Grace, now it really is like a trip to the doctors – lots of waiting around for something to happen until the inevitably vague verdict and the feeling of ‘why did I bother?’ Why has the pace slowed to that of a snail’s? And why are the more interesting characters (Addison, Bailey, Sloan) constantly being side-lined to make room for the hysterical playground antics of the others? If there is a tonic to cure the malaise that has enveloped GA it better arrive soon – as there are only five episodes left of the season and I don’t know that I can make it until the end.

My suspicions were confirmed by 11pm last night – Grey’s Anatomy has hit a slump. After a poor episode last week we were treated to an even worse one yesterday, with the medical drama becoming slow, repetitive and dreary. How I hate sticking the boot in like this – but come on and prove me wrong Grey’s. There’s nothing like a return to form to make a girl forgive and forget.

The race to become Chief continued with Marlow presenting the hospital’s board with a ten year plan, much to the annoyance of the current Chief. Sloan also fared well with a ‘right now’ policy stolen from a chance conversation with Bailey, while Derek was too distracted by Meredith to focus on work. Blah blah blah. Further blah came in the shape of Karev’s burgeoning friendship/ romance with the mushy-faced Jane Doe. Last night saw him help the unidentified woman pick a face – dear God. How long can this dull plot drag along for? I’m bored by it, Hell even Karev looks like he’d rather be somewhere else. Let’s pick up the pace people!

After the mid-season high of the ferry crash saga, Grey’s Anatomy seemed to suffer a bit of a low last night. It had invested so much energy and intensity into the three episode story-line that it felt a bit tired and exhausted afterwards, as though it needed to put its feet up and have a nice sit down. Sadly for us, the show limped its way through a rather slow and sorry hour that saw me roll my eyes in annoyance on more than one occasion.

Now that her mother is no more, Meredith began to accept her other side of the family: sad-sack dad Thatcher and perky step-mum Susan. The uncomfortable attempts at family bonding were dreary and non-eventful, a pale shadow of the emotionally fraught relationship between Meredith and mother Ellis. Why they killed off this character I don’t really understand. Did they think they had played it for all dramatic possibilities or did they simply want to give Meredith a whole new set of domestic dilemmas? Regardless, the new alternative is going to have to pick up speed it if hopes to emulate any of the former relationship’s intrigue.

Last week’s ending to Grey’s Anatomy was just great. If I was a cartoon character (which I’m not altogether sure that I’m not on some days), my jaw would have hit the floor and my eyes poked out on stalks as Meredith was told by Denny Duquette and bomb disposal expert Dylan that she, like them, was dead. The revelation was an incredible finale and I then spent the next seven days in eager anticipation of when GA would be back on my telly.

Picking up where the second part finished, we rejoined Meredith and some other notable dead folk (Liz, her mother’s former nurse, Bonnie one of her most notable patients and her dog, Doc) as she struggled to come to terms with what was happening. True to his training, Dylan was all for explaining things to Meredith in a forceful, direct fashion but Denny intervened, believing a more compassionate, understanding route was possible. Dylan raged that they were running out of time and couldn’t waste a moment, while Meredith looked on confused. What were they talking about and why was time of the essence?

The personal lives of the folk at Seattle Grace hospital took a back seat last night when a mass trauma assumed centre stage. A ferry crashed at a local dock and the interns were dispatched to aid the injured in what was part one of a three part story arc. Were the interns ready for such a large-scale tragedy and who could be in danger themselves?

Still upset after last week’s emotionally bruising encounter with her mother Ellis, Meredith was found by Derek almost drowning herself in the bath. She steadfastly refuted that she was doing anything drastic and insisted that she didn’t need him to save her, but Derek grew increasingly suspicious that all was not well. It was this dark mood over Meredith that deterred Cristina from sharing with her the happy news of her engagement to Burke, though with Sloan having overheard Burke telling Derek, the hospital was soon abuzz with the upcoming nuptials.

TV Review: House, Five, Thursday 23 August, 9pm

The third season of House came to a close on Five last night (*blub*) with a double-bill. I don’t know why they aired two episodes back to back though as it wasn’t a two-parter, just the normal self-enclosed instalments we’ve come to know and love. That’s not to sound ungrateful – House is brilliant and any time I spend with those characters is precious, I just wish Five hadn’t felt the need to rush through the final moments. Even though I’m already writing news on the cast for next series (see the story here), I so wanted the third season to end correctly.

The first episode entitled ‘The Jerk’ saw a chess whizz kid admitted to the hospital having violently attacked his gaming opponent. While the victim suffered wounds that would easily heal, Nate, the jerk of the title had severe head pains that House and his team struggled to diagnose. With an inability to censor his dialogue, 16-year-old Nate was obnoxious and rude to all his attending physicians and ignored his mother when she would attempt to intervene. Was his mean and inappropriate behaviour a symptom of his condition or was he simply a bit of a brat? If only we had a genius doctor that could help…

Now half-way through this, its third season, Grey’s Anatomy is really starting to hit its stride. With both Burke and George proposing to their lady loves last week and Izzie donating her inheritance to Miranda’s campaign for a free clinic – there were big changes a foot at Seattle Grace Hospital.

The biggest of these was the unexpected lucidity of Meredith’s mother, former medical luminary Ellis Grey. Afflicted with Alzheimer’s, Ellis’ condition had deprived her of properly knowing her daughter for the past five year, a truth that she took to heart. Upon learning that she had the illness, she was keen to familiarise herself with the Meredith of today and compensate for lost time. Sadly, she found that her daughter failed to meet her expectations and painfully dismissed her as ordinary.

Last week’s episode ended with my eyes bugging out and my jaw gaping in a manner somewhat less than attractive. Why? Because Foreman had tendered his resignation to House and was looking to flee the hospital before he became any more like his grouchy mentor – that’s why. This week’s instalment picked up where the previous one ended and Foreman was under scrutiny for his decision.

Chase persistently endeavoured to identify the reason why Foreman was off and was intrigued that neither the departing doc nor House would tell him why. Cameron was less pushy and was rewarded for her patience, with Foreman opening up to her with his private motivations. Whether he will actually leave is still anyone’s guess, with House seeming confident that he won’t. He accused Foreman of secretly wishing to stay, but during the course of the episode Foreman seemed even more appalled by House’s behaviour than normal. And, as we know, normal for him is pretty bad.

Grey’s Anatomy managed to resolve a few of its long-standing sagas in last week’s double-bill, and so yesterday’s episode felt like a clean slate in many ways. Of course, there was still plenty of action at Seattle Grace but thankfully Meredith was no longer snoring and Izzie had cashed her cheque.

Miranda had a new cause, that of a free clinic. This idea garnered zilch interest from the quartet of big-name surgeons (Burke, Shepherd, Montgomery and Sloan) and it almost seemed like she couldn’t articulate herself why it was such an important project. Finally, moments away from the episode’s end she unleashed her reasoning for the clinic to the unimpressed docs: to have something to believe in as once she had believed in each of them. Her tactics of shame worked and they signed letters of support without another word. This left funding as the final obstacle in her path to success, a hurdle easily overcome with a little help from resident money-bags, Izzie.

A bombshell was dropped at the close of last night’s House and I’m still reeling from the effects. I told you how distressed Foreman was last week after losing a patient due to his mistake. Well, despite House’s confidence that he would bounce back from the incident, Foreman’s commitment to his profession had been rocked to its very core. And I mean an 8.5 on the Richter scale.

This was to be his episode, with Chase’s pursuit of Cameron reduced to background noise and the Cuddy/House/Wilson saga long-forgotten. That is not to say that Foreman swamped the screen or smothered the action rather we knew that this new medical case was critical for him in a way that the others couldn’t imagine.

I was not aware, until I snuggled on my sofa at 10pm last night and flicked over to Living TV, that Grey’s Anatomy was to be a double-billed affair. Night-time me rejoiced at an extra hour of Seattle Grace hospital, while morning me groaned at the later-than-planned bedtime and inevitable sleepiness the next day. Well, happily night-time me won out – and I’m pleased she did, as the two episodes were pretty non-stop.

With so many characters and so many long-established storylines, GA has been sagging under its own weight in recent weeks. Thankfully, those that had been neglected for too long were finally given their chance to flex their acting chops. Most notably, McSteamy. Since his arrival in Seattle, the plastic surgeon has whined about coffee, been rude to his interns and slept with both Addison and Callie – and that’s about it. All until yesterday. For a hefty chunk, he remained unchanged – in the background and repeating old behaviours. I was once again lamenting the waste of an intriguing character, until the bombshell: he was angry with Addison for having aborted their baby.

How’s this for a medical show crossover? Last night’s episode of House was directed by Paul McCrane, better known to ER fans as the grumpy, ginger-but-balding Dr. Romano. Such details – it’s all in the details people. Recently House has taken a shift into the romantic lives of the docs, with the on/off shenanigans between Chase and Cameron and the possible whiff of attraction between Wilson and Cuddy. And though this more personal approach remained, it turned less amorous, more interfering.

I have wondered why House is obsessed between what, if anything, is transpiring between chum Wilson and boss Cuddy and last night left us no closer to solving the riddle. By asking Cuddy to the theatre in last week’s episode, I had interpreted this as sexual interest in her from House and I had believed this suspicion to be confirmed in the opening few minutes of last night’s instalment. But those clever writers – they take you in one direction, just to ditch you on the side of the road and race off without you.

And so second in my double bill of doctors, comes Grey’s Anatomy. I’ve previously had a whinge about the tendency for the Grey’s writers to overlook and neglect some of their more interesting characters and again, last night they were guilty as charged. As much as I love this show, they need to trim their cast (with Isaiah Washington fired and Kate Walsh given her own spin-off, maybe things will look up), as an hour episode reduces some to mere background players.

Again Sloan was two-dimensional. He got to choose which intern could work with him for the day and opted for Izzie, as she would be “good to look at.” However, unlike her predecessor Alex, Izzie wasn’t prepared to become a lackey for the egotistical plastic surgeon and refused to oblige his orders for coffee. Quite predictably, Izzie’s uncompromising feistiness impressed Sloan and after what has seemed like years on the sidelines observing, Sloan allowed Izzie to scrub in and watch at close range a difficult operation on conjoined twins.

I love my Thursday night TV double whammy of House at 9 and then Grey’s Anatomy at 10. Such yummy medical goodness. But alas and alack, last night’s episode of House was number 19 out of 24, which means an unwanted disruption to my nice scheduling is looming at the end of August – boo hiss. Still, I am determined to enjoy it while I can and last night’s episode of House was another cracker.

I really don’t know how the House team keep it up – every episode (barring that silly one with the rape victim) is of the highest quality and if anything, it just seems to get better and better. Yes, the cases are involving and suspenseful but they’re just the sideshow to the complicated personal lives of the doctors at Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital. And with Cameron having dumped Chase last week, there seemed to be an unprecedented outbreak of romantic entanglements.
