Gwyneth Paltrow to co-host US cookery show

Friday, August 10th, 2007

Oscar-winning actresses and cookery shows aren’t a combination you see often, but Gwyneth Paltrow is about to change all that. The Shakespeare in Love star told W magazine of her plans to co-host a Spanish cooking special with celebrity chef Mario Batali. The programme, which will be filmed in October and aired on the PBS network in the USA, will take a road-trip format, as the culinary couple celebrates all nosh Spanish.

But how did this odd pairing happen? Over to Gwynie: “I told him [Mario Batali], ‘I’ll go with you.’ Later, he was like, ‘Are you joking?’ And I was like, ‘No, I’m actually not joking!’ I eat all that (Spanish) stuff. The crazy fish things, the eels, I love it all.” But not the meat, though adding: “I won’t eat that. I’ll have to skip the jamon.” What can we expect next? Julia Roberts gutting fish with Rick Stein in Cornwall or Angelina Jolie cooking sheep brains with Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall? The mind boggles and the stomach turns.

Jamie Oliver: Through the years

Monday, August 6th, 2007

Jamie Oliver is back on TV screens tomorrow night in his Channel 4 show Jamie At Home and it got me thinking about the chef once known as naked. Jamie’s first TV series was way back in 1998, when he had yet to start either of his marriages (one being with sweetheart Jools, the other with supermarket Sainsbury’s) and just look at how he’s grown-up in front of our very eyes. Only 23 when we first met him, Jamie has become famous for his campaigning against unhealthy food in schools, saying “pukka” and Essex accent. And now at 32, he has an MBE, multiple successful TV programmes and best-selling cookery books. He has helped transform the image of celebrity chefs and though he has changed over the years, his boyish enthusiasm remains.
