Jo McElderry: Winner of Popstar to Operastar

Joe McElderry won Popstar to Operastar last night (10.07.11).  The former X-Factor champion, who was dropped from Simon Cowell’s record label in April just 18 months after winning the talent show, beat off stiff competition from runner-up Cheryl Baker, and hinted the experience has made him keen to pursue a career in opera.

Joe said: “Honestly, I’ve had an absolute blast with Cheryl, I love her to bits.

“My voice has been refreshed. For a singer and for me that is just so exciting. This is not the end of opera for me. I will definitely sing more opera and who knows, lets see what happens.”

Joe – who teamed with mentor Rolando Villazon to perform Gastaldon’s Musica Proibita, as well as belting out a rendition of operatic classic Nessun Dorma – was praised by remaining judges Vanessa Mae, Simon Callow and Katherine Jenkins for “eclipsing” Rolando with his talents.

Simon explained: “Joe eclipsed Rolando completely! What was fantastic was that tonight you had passion and temperament in spades.”

Vanessa added: “You held your own, I think this had to be one of your proudest moments singing with Rolando, you should be very proud. That was astounding as usual.”

While Cheryl was disappointed not to have won the ITV1 show – hosted by Myleene Klass – she admitted she had her money on Joe from the beginning.

She said: “I didn’t expect to get this far and he’s fantastic. I had my money on Joe from the beginning. I’ve loved it.”

Jo McElderry: From Popstar to Operastar

Joe McElderry and Cheryl Baker are to perform at a Katherine Jenkins concert on Saturday (09.07.11). The Popstar to Operastar finalists had been invited to the show judge’s performance in Hayward’s Heath, Sussex, but the Welsh singer then dropped the bombshell on them that they would also be taking to the stage.

She tweeted: “I have an exciting announcement… As finalists, Joe & Cheryl will be doing a special performance at my concert next Sat, Haywards Heath!” Despite the shock announcement and impending final, Joe appeared to be relaxed and looking forward to the weekend.

He tweeted: “Run in the park done! Have a quiet night before a busy funfilled week in opera land!!!(sic)”

Katherine also revealed her upset that former Steps singer lost out in a place in the final, despite being one of the favourites to win the show. She tweeted: “Gutted @ClaireRichards is not in the final – she sang sooo well tonight!

“Claire It’s been a delight working with such great talent. You’re so fab & we’re all going to miss you! C u Sun xx (sic)”

The Popstar to Operastar final will air on ITV1 on Sunday (10.07.11).

Cheryl Baker: Told to lay off the booze

Cheryl Baker has been banned from drinking while she competes on Popstar to Operastar. The Bucks Fizz star has been told by her coaches, including Katherine Jenkins, who is a judge on the ITV1 show, to lay off the alcohol in order to protect her vocal chords and give her the best chance of winning.

She said: “We’ve all been warned to protect our voices. You’re not meant to drink alcohol but have lots of water. So everyone is saying, ‘No Bucks Fizz.’ Ha! I’m not meant to drink milk or eat cheese or chocolate. Dairy products clog up your chords. But you are meant to get lots of sleep. Some chance!”

Cheryl, 57, says if she makes it through to the final she wants to be able to sing one of Buck Fizz’s biggest hits in a opera-style.

She added to the Daily Star newspaper: “I’ve said to the producers if I reach the finals of ‘Popstar to Operastar’ then those of us left should be allowed to sing one of our own famous songs in an opera style.

“Joe McElderry and Claire Richards are the ones to beat. But we all get along and support each other.”
