Finally, at long last, after months of worry that the whole thing would be a storm in a teacup, the video for Mr Zip’s magnificent ‘Where’s me keys, where’s me phone?’ has arrived.
When the song first aired on the last series of Britain’s Got Talent it caused a frenzied reaction. People all over the country were asking each other ‘did you see that bloke on telly?….y’know….the keys thing’ or writing to the Prime Minister demanding that the song be made the new national anthem (we made that bit up). Well now the full-on, bells-and-whistles single version is here for your delectation and you can watch the accompanying video below.
Mr Zip (also known as Zipparah Tafari) releases the single via Sony Music on August the 19th. So now you can all rest easy.
Always thought something a little bit different was going to win BGT this year and am not at all surprised it was the dog. I think people are a bit bored of karaoke acts and genuinely want to see original and interesting talent.
And while I would have loved the synchronised swimmers Aquabatique to have scooped first prize (original and truly difficult to perform) I’m not at all surprised it was Pudsey who proved to be the competition’s top dog. With a whopping half a million quid prize money that’s an awful lot of Pedigree Chum!
Obviously there is no getting away from the fact that dogs are cute and this one especially, but there was something about his owner Ashleigh and her genuine warmth and love for Pudsey that shone through. Tonight’s Mission Impossible, or should that be im-pawsible, routine, was inspired though Jonathan and Charlotte – the opera singers – proved to be worthy runners’ up. What a transformation from those two both in terms of looks and performance since the audition when she seemed to be little more than a prop for his talent.
As for the rest, I really liked The Lovable Rogues who also performed their own stuff, sounding a bit like Rizzle Kicks meets Plan B with a bit of Madness thrown in (though not quite as much as the judges kept going on about). Ryan O’Shaughnessy showed he had original talent with his own songs too – though his James Taylor inspired style wasn’t really to my liking.
All in all I thought this year’s BGT was pretty good viewing. David Walliams, in particular, gave the show a camp humour which made it seem less up its own arse than previous overblown Americanised Simon Cowell productions. Walliams’ performance with The Show Bears was typical and the way he pretended to fawn over ‘My Simon’ was reminiscent of the Little Britain Prime Minister sketches with Anthony Head.
Even Cowell seemed to get into the show this year (especially Ashleigh and Pudsey), though his comments at the end seemed to suggest that BGT had run its course. Surely not? Or maybe it has on ITV and he is planning to move it to the Beeb as reported.
My only criticism is that the early stages seemed pretty rushed with you only getting very quick bursts of the acts. Still there are only so many acts like the man doing Dalek impressions with a saucepan on his head you can put up with at any one time. And it was much better than last year which was won by the instantly forgettable Jai McDowall. Who?
Singer Jessie J: one of the judges on the BBC's The Voice
So the gloves are off this weekend as a new series ofBritain’s Got Talent goes head to head with the Beeb’s latest reality TV show, The Voice – in which the deal is you get to hear the singers without actually seeing what they look like.
Yesterday saw the official launch of a new series of Britain’s Got Talent which marks the return of music supremo Simon Cowell to the UK as well as a new judging panel, including comedian and swimmer David Walliams and singer Alesha Dixon – poached of course from the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing.
Word on the street is that Britain’s Got Talent is a little slicker than before and the acts – at least from the first episode – are a little less ‘out there’ (which sounds a bit of a shame as I liked the more bizarre ones).
Speaking at yesterday’s BGT launch, Cowell claimed that he is ready for a battle with the BBC and denied accusations that he wanted Tom Jones – one of The Voice’s judging panel – to work for him.
“I think [The Voice] have got themselves in a mess,” said Cowell. “They need to get their sense of humour back.
“I read one thing today and I want to clear the record up. It was intimated that Tom Jones had been offered a role on one of my shows.
“I met the guy once in Vegas and I think the show he must have been talking about was Opportunity Knocks. It wasn’t one of my shows. He might have got the names confused.”
He added: “They are winding this up to be a big battle, but it’s not. The shows go out at the same time and the better one wins.
The Voice airs on BBC1, 7pm and Britain’s Got Talent starts ITV1, 8pm
Ant and Dec were fuming when Britain’s Got Talent auditions were held up because Simon Cowell was having a bath. The presenting duo, along with judges David Walliams and Alesha Dixon, arrived at the Cardiff leg of the auditions on time at 2pm but at 4pm were still waiting for the 52-year-old media mogul.
Dec wrote on twitter: “If you’re outside in the Q in Cardiff, tweet @SimonCowell and tell him to hurry up.”
A source told the Sun: “Simon’s a law unto himself. He never gets up before noon and is happy working late at night.
“The problem is the thousands of people who turned up for the show – as well as Ant and Dec and his fellow judges David and Alesha – were on time. They had to sit twiddling their thumbs for a couple of hours while he pampered himself in his suite.”
The ‘X Factor’ boss is believed to have further angered the Geordie duo when he hopped in the bath tub in the middle of the auditions.
The source added: “It’s not uncommon for Simon to get up and go for a bath during the show. He comes back smelling really lemony.”
Meanwhile, Simon has hired Sharon Mills – the producer of E4 reality show ‘Made in Chelsea’ – to film backstage scenes in order to catch the bickering and flirting between the contestants.
A source told the Daily Star: “Out of all of Simon’s shows, ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ has the most variety from animals to circus acts and fire-eaters.
“He wants to give viewers a bigger insight into what happens backstage with them all. With Sharon’s track record in reality TV, she’s perfect for the job. With such a wide range of people there’s always lots going on – fireworks and tantrums and maybe even romance.”
David Walliams: asked to tone down comments for BGT
David Walliams has been warned to tone down his outrageous comments. The 40-year-old comic has reportedly been reprimanded by Britain’s Got Talent bosses who fear his lewd humour is too much for the show’s early evening time slot.
A source told The Sun newspaper: “A lot of Walliams’ comments need editing out. It certainly can’t go on for the rest of filming. If we don’t get clean comments, that act won’t get a big showing.
“It’s a learning curve. He was very funny but we need him to be more family-friendly. But we’re still confident we made the right choice. Simon Cowell loves the banter and thinks the new panel has great chemistry.”
David made a string of flirty sexual comments towards fellow judge Simon, including asking: “Did that raise you up?” when a gay ballroom dance duo performed to Westlife hit ‘You Raise Me Up.’
He then went on to describe a scenario of himself and the music mogul re-enacting the performance and added: “You would be the lifter. You understand what I mean.”
At the second day of auditions in Manchester on Saturday (21.01.12), Simon told the audience: “David behaved very badly yesterday.”
Despite his comments, show bosses are delighted with David’ s introduction to the judging panel alongside Simon, Amanda Holden and fellow newcomer Alesha Dixon.
An insider told the Daily Mirror newspaper: “We’re thrilled with the natural chemistry between the judges – and hope it will continue throughout the series.
“The banter between David Walliams and Simon Cowell has been hysterical – they both give as good as they get which is going to make really entertaining television.”
Britain’s Got Talent will be holding auditions in Blackpool.
The ITV1 show is set to return to TV screens later this year and bosses are keen to get more cabaret-style acts in the competition so think returning to the North West seaside town for the first time since 2008 will provide them with that.
They have also switched the Scottish auditions from Glasgow – where Susan Boyle wowed everyone in 2009 – to Edinburgh.
One insider told The Sun newspaper: “Blackpool is well-known for its entertainment heritage and producers really hope this will throw up some quality acts.
“Producers also hope that by moving the Scottish auditions from Glasgow to Edinburgh they will tap a rich new seam of acts there as well.”
The new judging line-up of Simon Cowell, singer Alesha Dixon, comedian David Walliams and returning judge Amanda Holden, will visit the famous Opera House at the Winter Gardens on January 24.
Hosts Ant and Dec will lead a parade on the Promenade on January 18.
When the show previously went to Blackpool, Simon – who didn’t take part in last year’s auditions – said the audience was the best he’d come across.
Kim Cattrall is in talks to be a judge on Britain’s Got Talent.
The Sex and the City actress reportedly faces a battle with ex-EastEnders’ star Samantha Womack and former X Factor judge Dannii Minogue to join the panel of the show following the departure of US actor David Hasselhoff and comedian Michael McIntyre after just one series. A source told The Sun newspaper: “We love Kim. She might be best known for her American TV shows but she was born in Liverpool and spent a lot of time here in Britain.
“She gets our sensibilities in the way The Hoff never could.”
Simon Cowell has been confirmed as returning to the show, and is expected to be joined by existing panelist Amanda Holden and ‘Little Britain’ star David Walliams, and programme chiefs are now planning to extend the panel to four.
In addition, producers are considering moving the programme’s base from its current Wembley studio to Pinewood in Buckinghamshire in order to boost its chances of success after a lacklustre performance in the ratings last series.
The source added: “Some of the new acts are on such a grand scale that we are considering moving to a bigger studio.
Simon Cowell is definitely returning to Britain’s Got Talent. The music mogul – who gave up being a full-time judge on the show this year, returning only for the final week of live shows – is coming back to the panel following the departures of David Hasselhoff and Michael McIntyre after just one series, ITV chief executive Adam Crozier has confirmed.
However, the executive quashed speculation Simon would also return to The X Factor after its ratings slumped behind rival show Strictly Come Dancing this year.
Speaking at a Broadcasting Press Guild lunch yesterday (07.12.11), Adam said: “X Factor is still the most-watched television show when you combine the Saturday and Sunday viewing figures.”
Original judge Amanda Holden is staying with Britain’s Got Talent, while Dannii Minogue and David Walliams are tipped to take on the other seats on the panel.
A source told the Daily Star newspaper: “When Simon said he wanted to leave along with Piers Morgan, there were fears that Britain’s Got Talent wouldn’t be the same.
“As much as they love Amanda, viewers didn’t take to the newcomers so Simon is coming back with two famous faces.
“Dannii has been a judge on Australia’s Got Talent and X Factor and David will be a giggle.”
Dannii Minogue quit X Factor because of audition times
Dannii Minogue has hinted she could become a judge on Britain’s Got Talent. The former X-Factor mentor is in line to replace comedian Michael McIntyre – who quit his role as a panellist after only one season of the ITV1 show in order to concentrate on a 100-date stand-up tour – and Dannii admitted she loves the talent competition.
She told Heart FM: “I do love the show, it’s so funny.
“I don’t have any TV booked in for the next year. I haven’t made any decisions. Let’s see what happens.”
The 39-year-old beauty explained she was flattered by the reaction of her fans to rumours she would be joining the BGT panel and promised to make a decision “soon”.
Speaking on ITV1′s This Morning, she said: “There’s lots of things being discussed. But you know what’s nice is that there’s been an incredible reaction since the rumours were out.
“I’m always reading what my fans are saying on twitter and they are saying, ‘We’d love you to be there, we wanna see you back on TV, we are missing your clothes’.
“So reading that is so beautiful and I have to make a decision soon, but I guess it’s been a time for me to be back at home and really have family time which I haven’t had for a few years.”
If Dannii does take up a role on the show, she will join pregnant Amanda Holden and an as yet unconfirmed panellist after former ‘Baywatch’ star David Hasselhoff was axed from the programme last month.
Amanda Holden is expecting her second child. The Britain’s Got Talent judge – who has a five-year-old daughter, Lexi, with music producer husband Chris Hughes – is three months pregnant with a baby girl, and admits she is “thrilled and terrified” at the same time.
She wrote on her twitter page: “Lexi’s question of the day(and most days) “Mama when are you going to get a baby in your tummy?”Happy to say TODAY Lexi!Mama is pregnant!Yay.
“Am thrilled and terrifed all rolled into one! (sic)”
Amanda and Chris’ baby joy comes six months after the 40-year-old star suffered the tragic stillbirth of her baby son when she was just two months away from reaching full term.
She added in a statement on her official website: “Chris, Lexi and I are delighted to announce that I am pregnant and we are expecting a little girl.
“The first half of this year has been unbelievably difficult for us and so we are beyond delighted to share this news with you.”
Amanda recently spoke out about her desire to have children following the “blackest period” of her life.
She said: “I’m a naturally really optimistic girl and we’re not dramatic people. Although what’s happened is obviously horrifying, we can go on and have more children.
“Our future’s bright and you have to turn negatives into positives, and try and see everything as a blessing. That’s exactly what we’ve done.”
“It was without doubt the blackest period of my life. You never think that it might happen to you. I was an absolute mess. Poor Chris was too but he was amazing.”
Meanwhile, Girls Aloud beauty Kimberley Walsh will take over in the role of Princess Fiona in Shrek The Musical from October 5, with Amanda “not taking any risks” over the health of her baby.
She added in the statement: “I will endeavour to continue the show until the October 3. I do however ask you to bear with me as I will be putting myself and this pregnancy first.
“I have taken medical advice and although I am a strong girl and this is ‘once again’ a good healthy pregnancy I will absolutely not be taking any risks.”
X Factor Final, 2010: The most watched Saturday night TV programme of last 5 years
Saturday night TV has become live TV night with ITV – and Simon Cowell’s shows in particular – dominating a Top 30 list of the last five years top programmes produced by trade magazine Broadcast.
ITV claim the top two spots with Britain’s Got Talent (whose best ranked show was the 2009 with 18.3 million visitors). And the X-Factor final, December 2010 – in which Matt Cardle triumphed over Rebecca Ferguson, One Direction and Cher Lloyd with 15.1 million viewers – in second spot.
In third place was BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing, which brought in its highest ever viewing figure of 14.3million last December while in the fourth slot was ITV’s Dancing On Ice from 2006 which attracted 11.7 million for its live final.
A Broadcast spokesman said: “The days of Morecambe and Wise, Two Ronnies, Blind Date, Noel’s House Party and The Generation Game are long gone.”
“But Britain’s Got Talent, Ant and Dec, The X-Factor and Strictly Come Dancing remind us that Saturday nights remain big nights in.”
With knowledge that they are dominating British TV viewing in this way, it is no surprise that ITV now want to cash in and run new longer three hour X-Factor , with much more lucrative advertising breaks included.
The X-Factor will return to our TV screens on the 20th of August, so ITV can expect to rule the airwaves all autumn once more.

Simon Cowell: The BGT chief was wrongly accused of fixing the show
The blogger who claimed Britain’s Got Talent was fixed has apologised after being cautioned by police.
The 52-year-old man, who suffers from bipolar disorder, posted an article in which he accused the ITV1 show’s creator Simon Cowell of favouring eventual runner-up Ronan Parke so he would win the series. But he now admits to making it all up.
He said: “I am ashamed to admit to being the perpetrator of the recent Britain’s Got Talent fix crisis.
“I would like to offer my sincerest and unreserved apologies for all the distress and hurt I’ve caused, in particular to Ronan.
“What I did was wrong and I have no excuse for my actions.”
The anonymous blogger had claimed 12-year-old Ronan had been signed up by Simon’s record label, Syco, two years ago and was using the show to propel him to stardom.
However, Ronan – who lost out to eventual winner Jai McDowall – had always denied the claims.
Yesterday (03.07.11) a spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said the man, who has not been named, had accepted a caution last Tuesday.
A spokesperson for Sony Music added: “‘A man has now admitted responsibility for the wholly untrue blogs relating to Ronan Parke and the false allegations against Britain’s Got Talent, Sony Music and Syco.
“He has admitted he has absolutely no connection with Ronan Parke, Sony Music, Syco, or Britain’s Got Talent. He has apologised both via the police and directly to those involved and the matter will not be taken further.”
Xander Armstrong is to host a rival talent show to Britain’s Got Talent.
Airing on BBC1, Epic Win will see variety acts compete for cash prizes. But unlike the ITV1 show, singers and dancers are banned from taking part.
The BBC has stressed the programme isn’t a talent show for “fame hungry wannabes”, but is mainly about “British eccentrics showcasing unique passions and skills that you couldn’t see anywhere else”
In the show, the judges have to decide how much an act is worth, paying up to £3,000 when the series is aired later this summer.
BBC commissioner Katie Taylor said: “BBC In-house Entertainment is proud to bring the UK’s unsung heroes and their quirky talents to BBC One’s Saturday night audiences in Epic Win.
“What’s not to like about a fishmonger who, when blindfolded, can identify different types of fish whilst being slapped around the face?”
Another new show to be aired on the BBC is The Voice which the corporation spent £20 million buying the UK rights for. It is hoped it will rival ITV1′s The X Factor.
Presenters of the talent show are yet to be announced but former X Factor winner Shayne Ward is said to be in the running to co-host it with Alex Jones.
A source close to Shayne, who was dropped by Simon Cowell’s record company earlier this year, told the Daily Star newspaper: “He’s really nervous about screen testing but he knows this is a massive chance to become something other than a singer.”
Diversity's Ashely Banjo: Jam McDowall deserved win
Ashley Banjo thinks Jai McDowall deserved to win Britain’s Got Talent “one hundred percent”.
The Diversity dancer, who was crowned champion of the third series of the ITV talent show with the street dance troupe in 2009, rates Scottish singer Jai as one of his “three favourite acts ever” alongside his own group and operatic sensation Paul Potts.
Ashley exclusively told BANG Showbiz: “Jai one hundred percent deserved to win. There’s just something about him. His performance at the semi-final was up there with my top three favourite performances ever on ‘Britain’s Got Talent’.
“I’d have to put Diversity in there! And opera singer Paul Potts from the first series.”
However, 12-year-old Ronan Parke – who was runner-up to Jai – also received high praise from Ashley, despite claims the show had been fixed in his favour.
He added: “Ronan’s just such a talented little boy – he’s brilliant. He’s got a really powerful, refined voice for his age. I suppose people just aren’t satisfied without a little bit of controversy, but Ronan’s going to do really well for himself anyway.”
Diversity embark on their biggest UK Arena tour to date on March 29 at Glasgow’s SECC venue. Tickets are now on sale. See www.gigsandtours.com for more details.
Britain’s Got Talent winner Jai McDowall has still not signed a record deal. The 24-year-old Ayrshire crooner triumphed in the ITV1 talent show last Saturday (04.06.11) after impressing viewers with his version of Josh Groban’s To Where You Are.
And even though he won £100,000 and a slot at this year’s Royal Variety Show, he is yet to sign anything with the show’s boss Simon Cowell.
He told BBC Breakfast: “Simon spoke to me after the final but said he is very busy with American X Factor at the moment. After the Britain’s Got Talent tour I will hopefully sit down and discuss what is going to happen.”
While Jai is yet to sign a deal, it has been claimed the show’s runner-up Ronan Parke is set to recieve a £1 million recording contract. The 12-year-old singing sensation – who was the bookies’ favourite to win the ITV1 show – will reportedly be offered a lucrative contract by Sony Music in the hope he will become Britain’s answer to Justin Bieber.
However, the label is keen to keep news of the deal quiet for a while because of the controversy caused by allegations suggesting Simon “planted” the youngster on the show and had signed him up when he was just 10.
An insider told the Daily Mail newspaper: “I think Ronan will get a deal. He is very talented. But everyone is feeling quite sensitive about these ridiculous claims that it was all set up from the start. It has to be handled carefully.”
Meanwhile Jai has been forced to give up a stage role as a Nazi after his huge TV success. He was set up for a key part in Mel Brooks’s comedy musical The Producers, in which he was due to sing Springtime For Hitler on stage with his local drama group.
But Jai’s shock BGT win means the Loudoun Musical Society are now looking for a replacement lead man for their October show.
What I love about Britain’s Got Talent is that it does unearth some truly bizarre acts whereas The X-Factor is really just a glorified Karaoke contest. One of the most bizarre acts this year was Nathan Wyburn who first came to our attention with his portrait of BGT judge Michael McIntyre – made entirely out of marmite on toast.
While his semi-final artwork was a bit lame in comparison, you will be pleased to hear he’s back celebrating the Queen’s birthday. The 21 year old art student has recreated the Queen’s head on a stamp as a 14 x 10 slice toast art portrait to celebrate her 85th birthday this weekend (as you do).
Using ten jars of Marmite and over 140 slices of toast, the masterpiece took Nathan around two hours to complete. So while he may not be performing in front of her at the Royal Variety Performance (that honour goes to Scot Jai McDowell), he is ‘toasting’ the Queen – geddit – in his own unique way!
Ronan Parke finished second in this year's Britain's Got Talent despite being the bookies' favourite
Well there’s a shocker. Britain’s Got Talent’ runner-up Ronan Parke is set to sign a £1 million recording contract. The 12-year-old singer, who somewhat suprisingly finished in second place behind Jai McDowall in the ITV1 show’s final on Saturday night (04.06.11), will reportedly be offered a lucrative contract by Sony Music in the hope he will become Britain’s answer to Justin Bieber. Let’s hope not.
However, the label is keen to keep news of the deal quiet for a while because of the controversy caused by allegations the show’s boss Simon Cowell “planted” the youngster on the show and had signed him up when he was just 10.
An insider told the Daily Mail newspaper: “I think Ronan will get a deal. He is very talented. But everyone is feeling quite sensitive about these ridiculous claims that it was all set up from the start. It has to be handled carefully.”
Following the allegations, it was revealed Ronan was actually discovered on YouTube, which led to him having the confidence to enter Britain’s Got Talent. He recently explained: “I decided to give it a go, but I never expected a standing ovation.”
Despite all the controversy about BGT being fixed, in the end it was the result that no one could have predicted – not even Simon. Jai McDowall has been voted winner of Britain’s Got Talent 2011.
Talented, but not obviously star quality, the earnest Scotsman came from virtually nowhere to beat nine other finalists and scoop £100,000, ahead of the odds-on favourite Ronan Parke.
Even the judges looked visibly shocked, Amanda expressing her disappointment that her favourite (Ronan) was beaten into second place, ahead of Jacksons sound-alike band, New Bounce.
Presumably in an attempt at transparency to deflect allegations that the show is ‘rigged’, all of the acts’ places were read out in reverse order from 10 to 4 before the top three were announced: New Bounce (3rd), Ronan Parke (2nd) and Jai McDowell (1st).
And while history has shown that in the long term coming second in these competitions is often preferable to winning (Olly Murs who was runner up in The X Factor being the obvious example), it is possible that many people didn’t vote for Ronan Parke because of anger at the allegations – unfounded of course – that he had already been chosen as the winner by Simon Cowell.
Maybe we’ll never know, but two things seem certain. One is that all the controversy won’t have been bad for ratings. Secondly little Ronan Parke with his angelic voice and foppish Justin Bieber style haircut will be remembered long after Jai McDowall has been forgotten.
It was another explosive semi final for Britain’s Got Talent last night and once again the judges showed that fame had gone to their head, putting through weird Steven Hall.
The middle aged dancer was chosen over Out of the Blue to join Jai McDowall on tomorrow night’s final.
Jai who was awarded a standing ovation from the audience and the judging panel for his powerful rendition of Evanescence’s ‘Bring Me To Life’ – went straight through to the ITV1 show’s grand finale after winning the highest proportion of the public vote.
Comedy dancer Steven – who performed a mash-up of hilarious routines – was controversially put through to the final by the judging panel after landing in the top three alongside singer Edward Reid, who belted out children’s nursery rhymes to the tune of Whitney Houston’s ‘The Greatest Love Of All’.
To a mixture of boos and cheers from the audience, Simon – who was given the casting vote – told the pair: “I’m going to go with what I think the public wants, and forgive me, it’s Steven.”
Despite attracting some of the best comments and most positive audience reactions of the evening, ‘Glee’-inspired male voice choir Out of the Blue failed to even make it through to the final three.
In further controversies of the night, Simon reduced 19-year-old Jessica Hobson to tears by criticising her outfit choice and performance, as well as announcing French body popper Michael Moral will be brought back for a dance-off against fellow mover and shaker Razy Gogonea on tomorrow’s semi-final, despite him being initially voted off by the judges.
So who can you expect on tonight’s show? Firstly there’s caravan resident Michael Collings who wowed in his first audition, while dancer Razy Gogonea is also set to make waves. They are joined by Pip and puppy, Marawa and Antonio Popeye to name a few.
With the final just two days away things are hotting up on BGT as Simon Cowell becomes increasingly belligerent and sarcastic, bemoaning the judges’ choice of semi-finalists so far.
In tonight’s show Ant and Dec introduce eight more acts – Edward Reid, Out of the Blue, Steven Hall, Mexican Mayhem, Jessica Hobson, Dance Angels, Jai McDowall and Nathan Wyburn. I wonder what Simon Cowell will make of Marmite artist Nathan Wyburn – I guess he’ll either love him or hate him (I predict the latter).
Judges Simon Cowell, Michael McIntyre, Amanda Holden and David Hasselhoff will be looking for something to match the standard set by previous winners including Paul Potts as viewers vote for who they want to see at the Royal Variety Performance. The results can be seen at 9.30pm.
