Ultravox singer Midge Ure (pictured right) became the first ‘celebrity’ to be voted off Popstar to Operastar’ last night (05.06.11) despite being one of few names most of us have heard of.
The 57 year old star, who organised Band Aid and Live Aid, found himself in the bottom two alongside former Pussycat Doll Melody Thornton after failing to impress viewers of the ITV1 show. He quipped: “I’ve done my little bit for opera… and now I’ll go back to saving the world.”
While Midge was booted off, former X Factor winner Joe McElderry sailed through to the next round, as did Bucks Fizz star Cheryl Baker, Jocelyn Brown and Erasure’s Andy Bell. The other stars to make it through were former Steps singer Claire Richards and Toploader frontman Joe Washbourne.
Earlier in the evening, all of the contestants had performed to great admiration from the judging panel – made up of Katherine Jenkins, Rolando Villazon, classical violinist Vanessa Mae and actor and theatre director Simon Callow – who said they had all done a good job of belting out opera classics.
The show – hosted by Myleene Klass – continues next weekend.
