The Devil's Whore sequel in the offing?

One of last year's TV highlights was The Devil's Whore on Channel 4. What a magnificent thing of beauty that was (we voted it at number two in our end of year poll). Andrea Riseborough, Dominic West, Michael Fassbender and John Simm all on tip-top form in a rousing, gritty story set during the English Civil War. Great stuff, it really was. Now, just as the schedules seem to be reverting to lifestyle and reality shows galore, there was some good news this morning. Peter Flannery, TDW's writer, is writing a sequel.

We've been lucky this year. There has been some very good dramas, and Channel 4 has played a huge part in providing us with a number of meaty morsels. What I like about Channel 4 is that it approaches period drama in the way I like period drama to be approached - grimy, gritty, far-from-perfect and entirely sad and wracked with bad teeth and all sorts of what you imagine life to be like in those times before toothpaste and Listerine. The Devil's Whore was a very fine case in point. A four-part series, it chronicled the life and times of Angelica Fanshawe, a young woman caught up in the horrific Civil War of the 17th century.

I wondered what would happen to Angelica Fanshawe at the end of her incredible journey in The Devil's Whore. In the past three episodes she has been pursued by an insane landlord, escaped the noose twice, lost two husbands (and a child) and been brandished a whore by all she encountered. Her incredible journey - from footloose, privileged Royalist to politically aware heroine - was played out in the crucible of bloody rebellion. I was willing her to pull through, to survive this grim time. I really hoped she would.

It's the final episode of The Devil's Whore tonight (Channel 4, Wednesday 10 December, 9pm) and what a treat this series has been. In tonight's finale, Joliffe's relentless pursuit of Angelica comes to a head, as does Sexby's loathing of Cromwell, who has been turning into a brute ever since he decided Thomas Rainsborough had to be killed. I can't wait to see how it all pans out, and whether Angelica can finally find some peace. She deserves a quiet life. She really does. The Devil's Whore has been devilling and whoring at a cracking pace after the relative calm of the first episode (which, lest we forget, still managed to feature wholesale murder, hallucinations, and the devastating loss of a childhood sweetheart), and last night's episode was truly brilliant. But I'm worried about Angelica, I really am. Everywhere she turns someone either wants to shag her, kill her or manipulate her. The woman must be cursed.

The outstanding Devil's Whore continues on Channel 4 tonight (Wednesday 3 December, 9pm), adn we're left wondering whether Angelica will survive the hang man's noose. These picture that I have gathered for you seem to suggest that she does, but how and why remains to be seen. What we do know is that it's not just Angelica's life that's under threat - King Charles also looks a bit doomed. It all adds up to another superb episode. Why is 4oD so rubbish?

I went out last night so I missed The Devil's Whore. I should have taped it but I thought, no... I'll watch it on the internet. That's what people do these day, right? People turn on their computers and they watch telly on them. I was going to be one of those people. I have been one of those people before. I watch telly on my internet. I am now. I was really looking forward to watching TV on my computer this morning, and catching up with episode two of The Devil's Whore. But I didn't. I couldn't. Why? Because Channel 4's catch-up service - 4oD - the biggest pile of shittle I've ever seen.

We've already had a Devil's Whore trailer today, but sod it... let's go a bit crazy and have a look at some images from tonight's episode (Wednesday 26 November, 9pm). I can't get enough of it, and I'm hoping that you can't either. The pictures - you have to click on the one below to access the whole half dozen or so - throws light on just who rescues the lady Angela from the gutter. It doesn't look as though it's John Simm's Edward Sexby - he's gone all Ray Mears on our arses. Enjoy!

So here we go for the second episode of Peter Flannery's superb English Civil War drama (Channel 4, Wednesday 26 November, 9pm). Tonight's episode sees Angela (the magnificent Andrea Riseborough) stripped of her aristocratic lifestyle and on the run, all grubby like. Some men of ill repute try to take advantage of her, and it takes an unlikely man of sort-of-much-better repute to step in and offer her a way out. How good is this series? Let's hope episode two follows on from last week's stunning opener. There's a trailer over the jump...

devils_whore_e01.jpgSumptuous. That's the word that kept popping and repopping into my mind as I watched the opening episode of The Devil's Whore last night. Everything looked like it was straight out of a Rembrandt, Vermeer, or Dovaston painting. Beautifully shot, fabulous costumes, solid and wonderfully-dressed sets and apocalyptic weather designed, as anyone who has read anything about this clever and thoughtful write-up of the period will know, as a meteorological metaphor for the political turmoil the country was suffering through. And not only the weather. It seemed that none of the characters could take a simple walk without being set upon by their opponents. And who knew the devil had such a long tongue?

The other week I went along to The Devil's Whore press screening, and lo, it was very good indeed. Channel 4 had also assembled some of the stars for a round-table interviews afterwards (alas, John Simm was on holiday). After saying hello to Dominic West (as you do), I managed to say hello to Andrea Riseborough. She looked nothing like she does onscreen (see Being Human, Long Walk To Finchley). She was fully gothed up - short black hair, deep, sensuous mascara and amazing shoes to boot. I was taken aback by her down-to-earthness - she thrust out a hand and said, "Hello mate, I'm Andrea. Nice to meet you" in her Geordie accent. She was really lovely and bright. Read the words that came out of her mouth over the jump.

Hurrah! Today is the day. The Devil's Whore starts on Channel 4 tonight (Wednesday 19 November, 9pm) and it should be really good. Or average. Even bad, maybe. But what I've seen of it (the first episode), it was more than good. I have high hopes, so we'll see what happens. It stars Andrea Riseborough, John Simm and Dominic West, and tells the story of a young woman called Angelica. She's a member of the King's court and footloose and fancy free, but isn't your average 17th century lady. She marries one of the posh young bucks and life for her finally looks ok. Until the Civil War. Then it all happens. To get you in the mood, I've gathered a set of images together. To have a look, click on the image below and off you go.

During a chat to a chum over at the Channel 4 press office this morning, she alerted me to the fact that we had been mentioned on Radio 4 stalwart Woman's Hour this morning. Presenter Jane Garvey was chatting away to Martine Bryant, the creator of The Devil's Whore, about the show and women's roles during the English Civil War. A few weeks ago I wrote a First Look after seeing the first episode at the Channel 4 press screening. Now, 42 minutes into Woman's Hour, my line about being "almost sexually excited" about the show was quoted. Nice. If you're going to be quoted on Woman's Hour it might as well be one that makes you out to be a bit of a perv. Nice. To listen to the episode, go here. Remember, 42 minutes in. And I'm not a perv. I was just making the point that I was really excited about a show that's based during a period I find really fascinating. So there.

Devils+Whore+Group+Pic+High.jpgWhen I first heard that The Devil's Whore (Channel 4, Wednesday, 19 November, 9pm) was hitting the screen, I immediately thought that it would feature Helen Mirren and a lot of sex. I can only assume that I was thinking of The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover, which doesn't featuring anything remotely resembling The Devil and his whore. Despite the fact it isn't that, I'm not disappointed as this looks to be one of the best new shows of the year.

Very excited, very excited. The Devil's Whore is the kind of period drama that I can really sink my teeth into, and the fact it's set during the English Civil War (a subject I'm really fascinated by) makes this a must-watch. It's this Wednesday (19 November) on Channel 4 at 9pm and it stars Andrea Riseborough, The Wire's Dominic West and the always-ace John Simm. Have a look at the trailer after the jump...

I love hyping something up to the shoulders, and The Devil's Whore is my latest New Favourite Thing Coming Soon On Telly. It's on next week (Channel 4, Wednesday 19 November, 9pm) and what I've seen of it, it's an absolute snorter of a dirty, grimy period drama. Set in during the English Civil War of the 17th century, it's full of torn family loyalties, saucy passion, politics and has an amazing heroine at its heart (watch out for my Andrea Riseborough interview next week). It has also got John Simm in it, and today the man himself was featured on the cover of Radio Times. I almost wet myself.

It's difficult for me when I go to press screenings because I get really excited about a show and enjoy it and then write about and then get hammered (see Bonekickers). Must be something to do with watching a television show on a big cinema screen or the cast standing not ten feet away. Seductive viewing surroundings aside, I make no bones about this one... I was verging on the sexually excited about The Devil's Whore. Why? Well, the English Civil an event and a time that has always fascinated me (ever since the BBC's 1980s drama By The Sword Divided), Peter Flannery (of Our Friends In The North) wrote the thing, and it stars some of my favourite actors (John Simm, Andrea Riseborough and Maxine Peake, as well as The Wire's Dominic West and the always-great Peter Capaldi). What wasn't there to like?
