This has to be the least surprising news since we learnt there was a new romance in the Big Brother house. Demons, the much maligned ITV1 series, has been canned by the channel because, erm, it was rubbish. It had obviously spent a massive amount on it and had high hopes for it, but it forgot the crucial basics - a script and some decent actors (Philip Glenister and Zoe Tapper aside). We all know Demons hasn't lived up to its promise (mainly because of its poor writing and the fact it doesn't quite know what it wants to be), but it has had its moments. Despite the above I relatively enjoyed the first episode, and I enjoyed the Zoe Tapper vampire episode. Other than that it has been a disappointment. Still, it has maintained healthy enough ratings (although it has dropped somewhat from its series-opening figures), and now it's time for the finale. Will you be watching? And what's going to happen?

If anyone was to host a seminar on good fantasy TV versus bad fantasy TV they would surely use these two shows as fine examples. Demons, it has to be said, has been merde. I sort of enjoyed the opening episode, mainly for Mackenzie Crook's brilliant Teddy Boy on acid outfit, but what always worried me was the standard of writing and the neither-family-nor-adult timeslot. Subsequent episodes revealed these flaws in greater detail. On the flipside, Being Human is a razor-sharp, flatshare comedy with fantasy overtones. Now that's how you write fresh and fun geek TV.

Still enjoying Demons? Still hating Demons? It seems people are erring on the latter, but no matter... we'll press ahead with an episode three preview. In tomorrow night's episode (ITV1, Saturday 17 January, 7.40pm) Galvin and the team come against a rat-like creature called Mr Tibbs. This is personal for Galvin because Tibbs killed his wife, so all hell, one can imagine, will break loose. Maybe. Demons got a bit of pasting last week, didn't it? Our John thought it fell between two stools and didn't quite know what it wanted to be. Elsewhere, there was consternation at Philip Glenister's variable American accent, and, it has to be said, some of the dialogue was pretty shocking. However, it continues tomorrow night (ITV1, Saturday 10 January, 7.45pm) and I may just have a little look to see how it develops. In tomorrow night's show, we're going to be treated to 2,000-year-old demon, as well as Richard Wilson doing a guest turn. To have a look at this week's episodic pics, click on the image below.

I'm pretty sure I'm not in the right demographic for this. There again, I'm not entirely sure what that is. Where do you find an audience that will be scared by the sight of Mackenzie Crook with a really bad mullet and a plastic nose, big enough fans of Philip Glenister not to be completely turned off by his attempt at an American accent that wanders from one coast to another (stopping by various mid-west States on its journey), while at the same time wanting to watch Christian Cooke casually discarding his shirt at every available opportunity (not to mention some unavailable ones)? I think the trouble is, Demons, whose basic idea of "Torchwood meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer" could have been so promising, tries too hard to be all things to all audiences, and ends up misfiring on all counts.

Demons starts tonight (ITV1, Saturday 3 January, 7.20pm) and I went along to the press launch last month. Along with the screening, there was an opportunity to chat to the cast afterwards, which meant seeing Philip Glenister hold court to dozens of journalists. As you might imagine, he's friendly, charismatic and fun. In Demons Glenister plays Rupert Galvin, a demon hunter sent to London to make contact with Luke - a teenage boy who, as it turns out, is a descendent of the legendary vampire hunter Van Helsing. Over the jump, you'll be able to read what he said about the part and the show, and what happened when Harvey Keitel rang him to talk Gene Hunt. Enjoy! Tomorrow night sees the start of Demons, ITV1's big, new Saturday night family actioner (Saturday 2 January, 7.20pm). You might have seen the adverts - the channel has been flagging this up for a while now, and the advertising spend has been evidently pretty high. It's a re-imagining and a 21st century re-working of the Van Helsing story, with Philip Glenister in the lead role as a sort of Obi Wan-type figure, guiding young Van Helsing descendant Luke through a dark underworld of demons and Mackenzie Crooks. We all know that Philip Glenister is The Man. His Gene Hunt is the true TV iconoclast of the Noughties, so whenever he pops up in a new TV show - all swaggering, Alpha Male charisma - he deserves to be watched. He's still Gene Hunt in Ashes To Ashes, of course, but last night I went to a press launch of ITV1's brand-new, Saturday night family fantasy drama series for 2009, Demons. So what did Phil do next? And, more importantly, what accent would he be rocking?
