fotc_mg.jpgYes yes Anna, Flight of the Conchords is on BBC Four at half ten on Tuesdays. We know that, we watch it. It's cool. That 'Friends' song last week was a joy. Well yes, but this episode is just a little bit special. Firstly, it is directed by the wonderfully inventive Michel Gondry - (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and dozens of awesome music videos) which means it will inevitably be a visual delight. But that's not all...

flight_of_the_conchordspic.jpgTwo episodes into the new series of Flight of the Conchords, and things are bobbing along nicely in the so-laid-back-it's-horizontal way in which Jermaine and Bret tend to face life's little challenges. What's especially good about this series is the fact that the writers have clearly made a concerted effort to make more of the 'secondary' characters Murray, Mel and Dave, which for me can only be a really good thing. In this week's episode, Bret gets into trouble after dissing all the rappers he can think of - pop over the cut for a lovely preview clip...

flightotc.jpgSo where did we leave our heroes Bret (Brit? Bret. Brit? Bret etc) and Jermaine at the end of series one of Flight Of The Conchords? Well, against all the odds, their inept manager Murray has hit the big time with Crazy Dogs - a band comprising Demetri Martin and a dude on the bongos - leaving our guys pretty much fending for themselves, and even lacking their only fan, who is now singing Doggy Bounce with the rest of the US...

flightotc.jpgBBC Four doesn't show many comedy series, but my word it knows how to pick a good'un. It was the natural first home for The Thick of It (which is graduating to BBC Two for the next series) and took Cowards under its intellectual wing when it became clear that their comedy just wasn't suited to BBC Three. And then there's Flight of the Conchords, the low-key but laugh-out-loud series starring two Kiwi geniuses...

BBC Four broadcast Flight Of The Conchords in 2007 and, while it was hit and miss, it delivered some brilliant moments. The Kiwi musical comedy duo are back for a new series in the US (on HBO) very soon, which means it'll be on in the UK pretty soon. Anyway, Flight Of The Conchords people got in touch with me with a whole bunch of links to youtube and some new series clips. Go over the jump to have a look, they're funny. Also, the show is running a video competition, offering fans the chance to take part in a video, 'lip dub' contest. There's a free MP3 to download on the site and the winning videos will win something. Nice. Go here to have a look.

flight.jpgAfter last week's live-show taster of the New Zealand comedy duo The Flight Of The Conchords, the series proper started last night on BBC Four. You'll remember that FOTC comprises Jermaine Clement and Bret McKenzie (though the New Zealand accent had me convinced he was called 'Brit'...) and this HBO series follows them as they try to break America, and 'get girls'.

Like all good double acts, Jermaine and Bret have a natural chemistry that clearly has nothing to do with acting, but unlike most, there's not really a defined difference between them. They're both deluded, both outwardly convinced that they're great, and massively popular, and inwardly aware that they're not.

Initially, I was going to rant and rave about how fabulous Flight of the Conchords are and how you really should watch them on Tuesday, BBC2, 9.30pm. Instead, knowing that comedy is a tricky thing to share, I thought I'd give you this video to watch. If you laugh at this, then you'll love it. If you don't, then you must be a little dead inside.

Flight_of_the_Conchords.jpgI hate comedy when set to music. I'm not talking about Spinal Tap... more... I don't really like Bill Bailey when he sings his songs. It's too studenty. Bailey is a hilarious man without the guitar thank you very much. Yep. It's all a bit too knowing and winking for my liking. Last night, I prepared myself for the worst with One Night Stand - Flight Of The Conchords (BBC Four, Tuesday 18 September, 9.30pm) which had been tipped by our Anna.

The show started, and there sat an awkward couple of blokes called Bret McKenzie and Jermaine Clement. They hail from New Zealand. Off the top of my bonce, I can't think of anything deemed funny that was NZ produced. Still, to dismiss it outright would be churlish wouldn't it? Wouldn't it?

conchords_one_night.jpgI love comedy. I love music. And dammit, there are few things I love more than when the two things are combined. Hooray and hallelujia then, that BBC Four are bringing fabulous comedy-folk duo The Flight Of The Conchords to our screens (just one of so many reasons at the moment that BBC FOUR MUST STAY!).

The Conchords comprise New Zealanders Bret McKenzie and Jermaine Clement, and their rise to (near) stardom has followed the path of so many comics before them. They started out with a Perrier-nominated live show, moved to radio, and have recently had their own TV series shown on HBO in the US. That series will be on BBC Four from next week, but tomorrow night we get a little taster of the weird and wonderful things to come, through this live special. If you can't even wait those few hours, the BBC site has plenty of clips to whet your appetite. Prepare to be obsessed.

HBO puts new comedy online

conchord.jpg

Yesterday I mentioned that a new sci-fi show, Sanctuary, is doing the internet-only thing, and now I read that HBO, purveyors of such things as The Sopranos and Sex and the City, is to put its latest comedy series, Flight of the Conchords, online too, so says Variety.

The show, which centres around Kiwi comedy-music pair Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie and their adventures in New York, will air on several video sharing sites such as MySpace to show the pilot.
