Top Ten Most Iconic Voiceovers

Friday, June 12th, 2009

voice_over_gary-owens[1].jpg

This is a tricky one. All week we’ve been paying tribute to those who put their voices to pictures on our televisions and, on the last day of our Week, I thought it’d be fun to compile a Top Ten of what I consider to be the most iconic voiceovers ever. That’s a grand statement, I know, but I thought I’d give it go. It was a bit of tough job, I have to say. When you think back to TV shows, there really hasn’t been too many amazing voiceover people in recent times. In fact, with the likes of Dave Lamb and Marcus Bentley I think we’re living in a golden age for voiceover. It really depends on what you regard as a voiceover, and I’ve had to include adverts in my list. Have a look after the jump and see if you agree… or tell me whether I’ve missed anything out.

Voiceover Week: Marcus Bentley, Big Brother

Friday, June 12th, 2009

It’s the first Big Brother eviction of the new series tonight (Channel 4, Friday 12 June, 9pm/10.45pm) and in among the carnage, one voice stands tall. Ten years ago Channel 4 employed a Geordie man to provide the narration to its BB highlights packages, and his incredible voice immediately endeared him to the British public. Marcus Bentley went on to become one of the nation’s truly iconic voiceover artists (how many voiceover people do you know who have their stuff turned into a catchphrase?) and it was a reall treat to talk to him on the first day of the tenth series. Daaaeeeee wun, as he might say. Have a read at the interview after the jump…

Voiceover Week: India Fisher, Masterchef

Celebrity masterchef starts tonight (BBC One, Wednesday 10 June, 8pm) and that really is rather a cause for celebration. Rather. As fantastic as it will be to see Gregg and John in action (complete with a look at how Gregg’s tasting technique), one of the unheralded things that really makes the shows is India Fisher’s smooth and husky voiceover. She’s one of our favourite voiceover artists here at TV Scoop, and it was a real treat to talk to her. Although she sounds nothing like she sounds on the telly. Have a look at what she said after the jump…

Voiceover Week: Is God doing voiceover work?

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

gods hand.jpgReligion is getting a bad deal at the minute. People are fleeing churches and temples and siding with Dawkins (yeah, like he’s not an irritating mouth-piece is he?). Thanks to a buncha terrorists and pro-lifers, religious stock is low. Everyone is tarring everyone else with a brush so big that perfectly lovely people are getting treated like they’re mentally ill or something. So with that, God’s got himself an idea. When Lennon said that The Beatles were bigger than Jesus in popularity, God got thinking in only the way a deity can. Maybe pop culture is ravaging spirituality in the world? Certainly in the Western World. Okay, let’s take the mountain to the people… let’s speak to them in a language they understand… let’s make them aware of existence of God Almighty via TV. And so, God got the voiceover gig…

Voiceover Week: Dave Lamb, Come Dine With Me

Monday, June 8th, 2009

davelamb.jpg

Let’s kick off our Voiceover Week with someone special. Dave Lamb is the man who supplies the very funny narration on Come Dine With Me, a show that has really captured the public imagination, prompting ordinary people who don’t live in TV Land to go out and enjoy their own dinner party shenaginalia. Aside from the cooking and cattiness, what really makes this show, I think, is Dave’s brilliantly sarky voiceover. An already successful comic actor and writer, he has really struck gold with this show, to the extent that he can sleep safe in the knowledge that he is the most famous person on telly you don’t know the name of. Read the words that came out of his mouth hole after the jump.

Welcome… to Voiceover Week

Monday, June 8th, 2009

Yes, welcome to Voiceover Week. What’s Voiceover Week I hear you ask? Well, every now and then we like to do themed weeks on TV Scoop and this one is all about those unsung heroes who provide the voices to our favourite shows. It’s a bit of a dark art (with the emphasis on dark… I imagine them to be locked in dark cupboards under the stairs, talking to themselves), so we’re paying tribute to them. Throughout the week, we’ll have interviews with the likes of Come Dine With Me’s Dave Lamb, Masterchef’s India Fisher and Big Brother’s Marcus Bentley. We’ll also be looking at the best and most iconic voices in TV history and imagining what it’s like to be a voiceover artist. Stay tuned!

Look out for our Voiceover Week, erm, next week

Voiceover artistes are an unsung lot, and with so many new shows around and about to start featuring some of the best in the business we thought it would be an opportune moment to take time out and salute these masters of verbiosity. All next week we’ll have special posts that cover voiceover oeuvre, and that means interviews with some of our favourite voiceover people (just got off the phone to Come Dine With Me’s Dave Lamb, for instance), clips and Mof on what he thinks about the whole thing. Should be a blast and, whisper it, our Comments feature should be back working by then, so you can all call us tosspots again if you want to!
