Have you seen that new commercial for Walker’s Crisps… where they ask you to do all the hard work and come up with some ideas for them? The run is for the ‘Do Us A Flavour’ competition where you, the public at large, can submit your ideas for new lines of crisps and the winner gets… something or other which may or may not include notoriety. Of course, I’ve been spending all morning submitting flavours like ‘Vodka and a Teabag’, ‘Cereal Milk’, ‘Fags’ and ‘Buttered Arm’. I’ve obviously got nothing better to do with my time. Anyway, on the ad’, there’s a great popska tune… but what is it?

There’s an advert on telly for some company called LV. Or Liverpool Victoria or something. I’ve no idea what they sell because I refuse to buy anything from ‘em. Why? Well, on their commercial, they’ve got the worst version of one of my most favourite songs ever recorded – ‘Have Love Will Travel’. The one you’ll hear in the commercial features an appalling “DUM-DIDDY-DUM” bit that makes me punch holes in the wall… but fear not… there’s a happy ending to this. You see, if you’ve thought ‘there’s a good little track in there… somewhere’, then you’ll be glad to know that there’s a version so good, it’ll make your hair stand on end… over the jump for some electrified follicles!

Okay, there’s a lot of dodgy tunes cluttering up the TV with faux-disco basslines and, well, people with brains won’t fall into the trap of thinking a product is cool, just around a bass riff. However, one bass riff that could sell time shares to death row murderers, is to be found on the Mini Clubman ad. Know the one I mean? It’s funky, clicky… and kinda sound like it’s from New York? Good grief. Look at the state of this article. It looks so very, very dull. Still, you shouldn’t judge an article by it’s snazziness, ’cause, contained within, is a cracking little rock ‘n’ roll pop ditty that will have you whistling along in no time.

There’s an commercial on the box for a Lucozade Sports drink. Like most things ‘isotonic’, it demands music that sounds modern, edgy and hip. Of course, this means that folk music and orchestrations are out. So who ya gonna call? Well, in the case of the newest ad’, it’s The Scratch Perverts, a bunch of turntablists from the UK, with their track ‘The Stand By’. Would you believe it? Here’s a video of the track. Enjoy.

There’s a Vodaphone commercial on the box at the moment with that famous croon “it must be love, love, love…”. But hang on. That’s not Madness. Did Madness not do it originally? Well no. It was in fact a chap called Labi Siffre. Would you like to hear it? It’s the better of the two versions. Press play on the video below!

There’s an ad’ for Kronenbourg 1664 which goes on about “Smaller bubbles, smoother taste”. You’ve seen it right? Well, loads of people are saying that the track featured is Britney Spears… and it ain’t. It’s actually a version of the great Buddy Rich track by forgotten one-hitters, The All Seeing-I. So, if you want to have a listen to it again, watch the video below… as rehashes go, it ain’t half bad (but not a patch on the original).

Folkie type music seems to be the sound of the modern salesman. Folk music says “come on, sit yourself down here… I’m your friend”. Of course, most friends don’t then try to flog you a load of tat. Anyway, one such folkie enjoying the fruits of the boardroom is Jon Allen with his song ‘Going Home’ which features on the ad’ for Land Rover Discovery 2.
