Okay, weird nostalgia/commercial break music crossover. There’s a super futuristic Autotrader advert doing the rounds with flying cars and wonky CGI. As I don’t drive and have virtually no interest in cars, I couldn’t tell you anymore about the bones of the advert… apart from one thing. Instead of having super zappy music of the future, the adcompany have decided to go toward a weird TV show of the past to soundtrack their wares…

Nostalgia Corner/TV Tune Up: Autotrader go back in time with classic kids TV
Wednesday, September 10th, 2008TV Tune Up: What’s that song from the Nescafé “Intense Aroma” ad?
Wednesday, September 10th, 2008
A jar of Nescafé is opened, and as its “Intense Aroma” wafts out of the jar, it morphs into an animated sequence of exotic flowers and birds. But the music! Ahhh! A hauntingly sensual piece of Latin music which draws me to the screen and leaves me rapt while the advert plays out, even though I won’t have Nescafé in the house. When it’s done I feel as though some strange 21st century pied piper has moved out of range, and I emerge from a trance. What is that beautiful music? Click through to find out and listen once again. But be warned. It’s addictive.
TV Tune Up – “On white horses let me ride away…”
Friday, September 5th, 2008
This fine looking gal here goes by the name of Jacky Lee (amongst others, but we’ll save that for another time eh?) and she’s the singer of one of the most infectious bubblegum theme tunes ever. But first, cast your mind back a year and think of an advert that featured a song that went “On white horses let me ride away…” which was selling Clark’s Shoes? Well, that was Jacky Lee, and the tune was White Horses which was also the theme for an old TV show of the same name! And to think I stumbled across all this by buying this on a 45 around 10 years ago, knowing nothing of all this! Wanna hear it in full? Over the jump you go…
TV Tune Up – ‘I’ve Been Everywhere, Man’
Monday, September 1st, 2008
It was inevitable that, after Long Way Down, Charlie Boorman would get his own TV series (as Ewan McGregor would bugger off back to the Silver Screen). So with that, Charlie has got his own show which is currently being touted around the box. He’s doing more travelling, this time, without his trusty bike. To be honest, I’m not especially looking forward to this show… nor dreading it. However, the trailer has provided me with something to whistle to whilst I’m making a brew…
TV Tune Up – How do you get from Dairylea to John Shuttleworth?
Friday, August 29th, 2008![]()
Remember John Shuttleworth? “I can’t go back to savoury now!” Well, John Shuttleworth had a comedy show on BBC Two years ago about this oddball crooner on his keyboard at working men’s club and the like. Well, John Shuttleworth wasn’t always… er… John Shuttleworth. We’re getting ahead of ourselves. See, there’s this Dairylea commercial doing the rounds with a spiky angular track rumbling away beneath. Who is it? What’s it got to do with John Shuttleworth?
TV Tune Up: What’s that song from the DFS ad?
Monday, August 25th, 2008
Bank Holidays are traditionally a time when we’re saturated with adverts for new sofas. I used to wonder just how many new sofas people needed until I did the sums (something like two-and-a-half million a year, assuming a 10-year life for your average sofa). It’s big business. Still, that doesn’t excuse the blanket coverage that the latest DFS ad has enjoyed over this holiday weekend. But what’s the song? And who did the original? And are they really singing “I wanna brand new arse and an episode of crims”?
TV Tune Up – What’s that song from the Walker’s ‘Do Us A Flavour’ ad’?
Friday, August 22nd, 2008
Have you seen that new commercial for Walker’s Crisps… where they ask you to do all the hard work and come up with some ideas for them? The run is for the ‘Do Us A Flavour’ competition where you, the public at large, can submit your ideas for new lines of crisps and the winner gets… something or other which may or may not include notoriety. Of course, I’ve been spending all morning submitting flavours like ‘Vodka and a Teabag’, ‘Cereal Milk’, ‘Fags’ and ‘Buttered Arm’. I’ve obviously got nothing better to do with my time. Anyway, on the ad’, there’s a great popska tune… but what is it?
TV Tune Up – What’s that song from the LV ad’?
Tuesday, August 12th, 2008
There’s an advert on telly for some company called LV. Or Liverpool Victoria or something. I’ve no idea what they sell because I refuse to buy anything from ‘em. Why? Well, on their commercial, they’ve got the worst version of one of my most favourite songs ever recorded – ‘Have Love Will Travel’. The one you’ll hear in the commercial features an appalling “DUM-DIDDY-DUM” bit that makes me punch holes in the wall… but fear not… there’s a happy ending to this. You see, if you’ve thought ‘there’s a good little track in there… somewhere’, then you’ll be glad to know that there’s a version so good, it’ll make your hair stand on end… over the jump for some electrified follicles!
TV Tune Up – What’s that song from the Mini Clubman ad’?
Thursday, August 7th, 2008
Okay, there’s a lot of dodgy tunes cluttering up the TV with faux-disco basslines and, well, people with brains won’t fall into the trap of thinking a product is cool, just around a bass riff. However, one bass riff that could sell time shares to death row murderers, is to be found on the Mini Clubman ad. Know the one I mean? It’s funky, clicky… and kinda sound like it’s from New York? Well, if you’d like to join me over the jump, I’ll tell you who it is!
TV Tune Up – What’s that song from the Furniture Village ad’?
Thursday, July 31st, 2008
Good grief. Look at the state of this article. It looks so very, very dull. Still, you shouldn’t judge an article by it’s snazziness, ’cause, contained within, is a cracking little rock ‘n’ roll pop ditty that will have you whistling along in no time.
Have you seen the advert for Furniture Village Sale with a song that goes on about “Poetry in motion…”? If you have, you may have been wondering what that great little blue-eyed croon is bubbling away underneath. Well, if you go over the jump, you’ll find the answer!
TV Tune Up: What’s that song from the Smirnoff “Sea” ad?
Friday, July 25th, 2008
There’s a very clever advert from Smirnoff that’s been doing the rounds for a while, where their “extraordinary purity” theme is represented by the sea disgorging vast quantities of rubbish including various warplanes, warships, a Scandinavian longship and the Colossus of Rhodes. And an even larger quantity of salt, presumably, although that’s not shown. The ad is accompanied by a distinctive Latin chant that sounds familiar – but where’s it from? Click through to watch the ad and find out.
TV Tune Up – What’s that song from the Lucozade ad’?
Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008There’s an commercial on the box for a Lucozade Sports drink. Like most things ‘isotonic’, it demands music that sounds modern, edgy and hip. Of course, this means that folk music and orchestrations are out. So who ya gonna call? Well, in the case of the newest ad’, it’s The Scratch Perverts, a bunch of turntablists from the UK, with their track ‘The Stand By’. Would you believe it? Here’s a video of the track. Enjoy.
If there’s a song that you’ve heard on the box that eludes you, drop us a line and we’ll feature it!
TV Tune Up – What’s that song from the Vodaphone ad?
Tuesday, July 8th, 2008There’s a Vodaphone commercial on the box at the moment with that famous croon “it must be love, love, love…”. But hang on. That’s not Madness. Did Madness not do it originally? Well no. It was in fact a chap called Labi Siffre. Would you like to hear it? It’s the better of the two versions. Press play on the video below!
TV Tune Up – What’s that song from the Heinz Salad cream ad about ladybugs?
Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008Have you seen the commercial about Heinz salad cream with a cracking little song on it about ladybugs having a picnic? Well, if you thought it sounded cooler than your average ad-track, or indeed, felt it was familiar, then you’ll be pleased to know your cool credentials are in tact! Ladybugs’ Picnic is a song from ’71, sung by Bud Luckey, who also composed and animated the segment for… Sesame Street! Watch the brilliant original below.
Glasto from the sofa: The BBC shows us what goes on behind the scenes
Monday, June 30th, 2008
There are many great things about watching Glasto from the comfort of your own home – never being bothered by Tall Man With Big Hair who always seems to be blocking your view is one of them, and not being restricted by such minor things as security guards and VIP areas is another. Nothing is off limits! Especially when you’ve got the Beeb going behind the scenes, and sticking the resulting footage up on YouTube…
Glasto from the sofa: Neil Diamond leads the weekend’s big sing-a-long
Monday, June 30th, 2008
So Glasto’s over, and if you’re like me you’ve been following it all on that lovely box in the corner of your living room, meaning there’s no need for a three day shower. Last night’s headliners were the recently reformed and rather legendary Verve, and Mark Ronson had the monopoly on guest appearances, but when you’re looking for a sing-a-long, you should look no further than Mr Neil Diamond. I’m not sure The Kids would have known as many of his songs as they did Shirley Bassey, Tom Jones or Brian Wilson, who have also filled the Sunday afternoon slot, but they sure knew this one…
Glasto from the sofa: Amy Winehouse attacks a crowd-member during a storming set
Sunday, June 29th, 2008
It’s been a good weekend for me – Wimbledon in the morning, a stupidly astonishing Doctor Who in the evening, and Glastonbury at night. That’s the sort of telly I like. There were two talking points at Glasto last night, of course, firstly whether Amy Winehouse would turn up in a fit state to perform, and secondly how Jay-Z would go down. Jay-Z did his best to be the biggest and most memorable act of the day by opening with Wonderwall in “homage” to Noel Gallagher (who has said that hip-hop has no place at Glasto) but he just couldn’t top our Amy.

TV Tune Up – What’s that song from the Kronenbourg 1664 ‘bubbles’ ad?
Friday, June 27th, 2008There’s an ad’ for Kronenbourg 1664 which goes on about “Smaller bubbles, smoother taste”. You’ve seen it right? Well, loads of people are saying that the track featured is Britney Spears… and it ain’t. It’s actually a version of the great Buddy Rich track by forgotten one-hitters, The All Seeing-I. So, if you want to have a listen to it again, watch the video below… as rehashes go, it ain’t half bad (but not a patch on the original).
TV Tune Up – What’s that song from the Sony Ericsson camera phone advert?
Monday, June 23rd, 2008There’s an advert doing the rounds about a Sony Ericsson Camera Phone. Normally, that would bore the chin off my face… but this one features one of my favourite bands doing one of my favourite songs from one of my favourite albums. That track is People Take Pictures of Each Other by The Kinks (taken from their sublime Village Green Preservation Socity LP). The video below contains the song so you can have a little listen.
…have a peek over for a bonus track…
TV Tune Up – What’s that song from the Land Rover ‘Cloud Hopping’ ad?
Wednesday, June 18th, 2008Folkie type music seems to be the sound of the modern salesman. Folk music says “come on, sit yourself down here… I’m your friend”. Of course, most friends don’t then try to flog you a load of tat. Anyway, one such folkie enjoying the fruits of the boardroom is Jon Allen with his song ‘Going Home’ which features on the ad’ for Land Rover Discovery 2. The commercial is know as ‘Cloud Hopping’ by the way. Here’s the track… and click here if you want to remember what the advert looks like.
