All the big guns of advertising are constantly striving to create iconic images that will burn themselves into our retinas, forever and ever. One that doesn’t quite do it, but at least stands out, is the Visa ad’ doing the rounds which features a guy dancing around on crutches (‘I hope he’s not claiming benefits!’ shout readers of The Mail). That guy is called Bill Shannon who is a self taught dancer, aka, The CrutchMaster believe it or not. However, you might be wondering what that great brassy tune is called, that has a whiff of Vegas Elvis. Well, read over and you’ll find out!

Have you seen that (really visually boring) commercial for Co-op travel? It’s all green and has someone talking about holiday destinations. Obviously, I’m a huge cynic and just sit there thinking “Yeah, like I can afford to go on holiday… cheers Co-op.” Anyway, regardless of whether you can afford a jollies or not, the song on the advert is enough to make you smile so much that the corners of your mouth meet at the top and your face falls off like a slice of ham. “It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…”. The song that’s haunting me most on the box in the build up to Yule-thousand-and-eight. Of all the Christmas songs on the ads at the minute (‘Run Run Rudolph’, the various tracks taken off Phil Spector’s Christmas album and more), it’s this one that really sticks in my head. I have a response to it almost like one of Pavlov’s dogs. I mean, as soon as I hear the “It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…” line, I immediately make a “maw-aw” noise to accompany the strings. It’s ridiculous! However, who is it by? Have you seen that advert on the box (where else, bearing in mind that this is a site dedicated to the goggle box?) for HSBC? Banking adverts usually make me wretch as they pretend to be your pal whilst having horrendous bank charges in the small print… however, the one I’m talking about features a really cool Bollywood tune that’s been stuck in my head for months! I’ve been searching for it for some time, and kept finding the wrong version and then, TV Scoop reader Finn sent it to me in an email, basically saying “cool huh?” Well, you’re probably none the wiser at what I’m talking about, but if you click over, you can hear it and you’ll say “AAAH! YES!” and then it will be stuck in your head for weeks.

There’s a commercial on TV at the moment for Benylin capsules. Of course, this in preparation for the cold weather and of course, these little wonderpills will make you right as rain in no time. Like the phrase ‘right as rain’, the ad’ got it completely wrong. Instead of implying that you can be back to your working best in no time, why don’t they take the angle of ‘Got a cold? Phone in sick for 3 days, but feel better after one, leaving you to enjoy your impromptu time off!‘ Anyway, there’s a song of my teens in the advert, extolling the virtues of struggling to get out of bed… and it’s…

Have you seen the advert for Clarks that says ‘Enjoy Every Step’? It features a lass being whisked around and led to a birthday party… presumably in her honour… and focuses mainly on her gloriously shiny shoes, stepping about the place? It features a great little number that has a sniff of Eastern Europe about it, but sadly rhymes ‘desire’ with ‘fire’. Still, we shouldn’t hold that against it. Have you seen that advert for a buncha bagels where everyone is crying? I know, it’s a weird premise but you can only imagine that they’re all wailing because someone ate their damn bagels! Well, bagels are pretty good. Even if you think the commercial itself is pretty annoying (like I do), there’s no hiding from the fact that the tune on it is ace. An old timey jazzy thing with some guy, possibly in possession of a nice pencil thin moustache, crooning “looove is the sweetest thiiiing”…well, I needed to know who it was, and boy, I found out (and I want to share it with you!). Okay, so we told you about John Lydon/Johnny Rotten flogging Utterly Butterly or whatever it is, right? Well, he’s not the first musician to star in an unlikely commercial. My mind got racing (for once) about other unlikely couplings. I mean, U2 appearing in a commercial for iPod doesn’t really count… but Ringo Starr selling junk food does! Every time Apple bring out a new version of the iPod, they promote it in an advert that is song heavy. Now, in the past, they’ve used super famous people like Bob Dylan and U2. However, in recent years, they’ve gone for lesser known bands, which is kinda cool for a big-ass company like Apple. So, the latest commercial, for the Nano Chromatic (which means nothing to me), features a ditty all about doing “handstands for you”… but who is it by?

There’s a tune that’s been driving me mad, because I love it so much, appearing on an advert for Special K. Have you seen it? Have you seen the commercial from the NHS, which is all about the HPV jab that you ladies are being encouraged to get to help prevent cervical cancer? It’s been causing an online stir all of its own with people saying “IT HURTS!” and “YOU CAN’T HAVE IT UNLESS YOU’RE A VIRGIN!”, all of which ain’t true. However, we’re not here to talk about all that, we’re here to talk about another stir – notably, that of the tune on the ad’.
