TV Scoop Interview: Rupert Penry-Jones, Whitechapel

Monday, February 2nd, 2009

RPJ2.jpg

When I told a few lady friends that I had just enjoyed the company of Rupert Penry-Jones, they immediately asked whether he was as attractive in real life as he is onscreen. The answer I gave them was yes. At the Whitechapel press launch, he had just come back from his holidays and was tanned. He wasn’t quite as tall as I’d expected him to be, but he was really well built. By this time my chumettes had drifted off into some glazed-eyed, filthy space, in the same way a few of the female journalists present at the press launch did. He has that affect on people, and I don’t blame them. Anyway, RPJ was there to talk about his role of Chandler in the ITV1 Jack The Ripper thriller, which starts tonight (Monday 2 February, 9pm). Have a read at what the Adonis said.

TV Scoop Interview: Steve Pemberton, Whitechapel

Sunday, February 1st, 2009

StevePemberton.jpg

The next in our interviews from the Whitechapel press launch sees League Of Gentleman’s Steve Pemberton wax lyrical about his character, the Ripperologist and tour guide, Buchan. Rupert Penry-Jones’ character, Chandler, believes that a spate of gruesome murders in the East End mirrors those of the original Jack The Ripper murders from the 19th century. He enlists the help of loner and Ripper obsessive Buchan, much to the disgust of DS Miles (Phil Davis). Here’s what Steve had to say, not just about Whitechapel, but also his new show for BBC Two, Psychoville. Whitechapel is on tomorrow night (ITV1, Monday 2 February, 9pm).

TV Scoop Interview: Phil Davis, Whitechapel

Saturday, January 31st, 2009

PhilDavis.jpg

The last time I saw Phil Davis on TV he was magnificent as Wilfred Bramble in The Curse Of Steptoe (actually, he was probably in Doctor Who after Steptoe), so it’s always a treat to see him on our screens. He’s one of my favourite actors, so it was a treat to meet him (in a roundabout) way at the press launch of Whitechapel. In the show (which starts on ITV1, Monday 2 February, 9pm) he plays DS Miles - a copper who has to deal with the arrival of a posh, fast-tracked whippersnapper (played by Rupert Penry-Jones) to his team. When the brutal murder of woman happens on his patch, Miles has to deal with the new guy taking control of the investigation, and the possibility that a new Jack The Ripper is on the loose. Read his words after the jump.

TV Scoop Interview: Miranda Raison, Plus One (Channel 4)

Wednesday, January 7th, 2009

plusonephoto.jpgYou may or may not remember that I went to the press launch for Channel 4′s new sitcom Plus One just before Christmas, and along with seeing a couple of episodes, I also managed to stick my dictaphone under the rather lovely nose of the rather lovely Miranda Raison – known to most of as Jo from Spooks. So what prompted the jump to comedy? How was it working with Duncan From Blue? Pop over the cut to find out…

TV Scoop Interview: Philip Glenister, Demons

Saturday, January 3rd, 2009

Demons-pics-from-the-show-5efab4d5-dc13-4304-9461-130974ad0865.jpg

Demons starts tonight (ITV1, Saturday 3 January, 7.20pm) and I went along to the press launch last month. Along with the screening, there was an opportunity to chat to the cast afterwards, which meant seeing Philip Glenister hold court to dozens of journalists. As you might imagine, he’s friendly, charismatic and fun. In Demons Glenister plays Rupert Galvin, a demon hunter sent to London to make contact with Luke – a teenage boy who, as it turns out, is a descendent of the legendary vampire hunter Van Helsing. Over the jump, you’ll be able to read what he said about the part and the show, and what happened when Harvey Keitel rang him to talk Gene Hunt. Enjoy! (By the way, I’ll stick up the Zoe Tapper interview next week).

TV Scoop Interview: Richard Hammond, Total Wipeout

Saturday, January 3rd, 2009

richard_hammond(2).jpg

Richard Hammond, along with his Top Gear colleagues Jeremy Clarkson and James May, is all over the telly at the moment. The aforementioned Top Gear, Blast Lab and now, for Saturday nights, Total Wipeout. The series starts tonight (BBC One, Saturday 3 January, 6.10pm) and it’s unashamedly stupid. Think a 21st century version of It’s A Knockout, with Hammond in the Stuart Hall role. The show itself is a big international hit, with various countries filming their versions on a purpose-built obstacle course out in Argentina. Following Hole In The Wall, this follows the BBC’s liking for old-school, physical gameshows. Over the jump are the words that came out of Richard Hammond’s mouth when I (and a few others around a table) interviewed him. Nice chap, as you would imagine.

TV Scoop interview: Velile Tshabalala, Doctor Who

Monday, December 22nd, 2008

Velile Tshabalala.jpg

As we all know, there’s a Doctor Who Christmas Special again this year and, from what I’ve seen, it looks pretty good. Full of Victoriana, and Cybermen with new bits and colours (man, they were so due a makeover), it also stars David Morrissey as another Doctor. Quite from where this new, other Doctor came from is still a mystery, but as his assistant is Rosita, played by newcomer Velile Tshabalala. I managed to grab a few words with her a week or so ago, and this is what she told me about her amazing Doctor Who experience. Have a gander after the jump…

TV Scoop’s Television Top 50 2008 interview: Peter Firth (Harry Pearce), Spooks

Friday, December 19th, 2008

If you’ve been reading TV Scoop today – and indeed during the past few weeks – you will have known all about our Top 50 shows of the year. We crowned Spooks as our favourite today, and it was richly deserved too. Series seven has to go down as the best British thriller series ever, and at its heart – as he has been for seven years – is Peter Firth’s magnificent portrayal of Harry Pearce. To get his reaction to the placement and to chat about Spooks in general, I managed to have a chat with Peter earlier this week. It was a pleasure; he’s a lovely man. What’s more he left me on the edge of my seat with a revelation about what may happen in series eight. Read on after the jump!

TV Scoop interview: Meera Syal, When Were We Funniest?

Thursday, December 18th, 2008

PR-UKTV-MeeraS-3666-fullsize.jpg

Recently (ie. last week or the week before) Adam and Joe (a favourite on TV Scoop even if they are on radio more these days. Can’t knock a bit of cross-media loving) did a thing on their very entertaining Song Wars strand where they made songs up that paid tribute to National Treasures. Joe composed a song about Joanna Lumley, and Adam did one about Stephen Fry. Those are two worthy recipients of a song, but for my money Meera Syal is up there with the best of them. I think she’s genuinely great. Tonight Meera will be appearing on G.O.L.D.’s When Were We Funniest? series finale (Thursday 18 December, 9pm). Just to recap – When Were We Funniest asked five comic people (Martin Freeman, Jo Brand, Phill Jupitus, Frankie Boyle and Meera) to be advocates for a particular comedy decade, and then asked the viewing audience to vote for their favourite. What is the funniest decade? We’ll find out tonight, but when I was offered a last-minute chat with Meera I could hardly turn her down, could I? Read what she said after the jump…

TV Scoop interview: The Hairy Bakers

Wednesday, December 10th, 2008

sundaypage.jpg

Si King and Dave Meyers make up the Hairy Bikers. This year, thanks to a controversial vowel swap, they became the Hairy Bakers. They travelled around the country baking pies, pasties, cakes and all-sorts and, as ever, they produced a hugely entertaining series. Now the pair are back for a Christmas special (BBC Two, Thursday 11 December, 8pm) and I managed to catch up with them a few weeks ago for a chat. They were very nice and friendly, as you’d imagine them to be. In fact talking to them about homemade bagels on Christmas Day and made turkey and ham pies got me bang in the mood for Christmas. Have a read after the jump…

TV Scoop Interview with Woolie and Worth

Friday, November 28th, 2008

Woolie&Worth.jpgThis week, two of TV’s brightest stars found themselves in the middle of a crumbling empire. I’m talking about Woolie and Worth, who have featured in the commercials for Woolworths. Of course, these are turbulent times for the high street, with Woolworths going into administration, MFI shutting up shop and everyone still doing their best to pretend that Marks and Sparks doesn’t exist. However, the falling of Woolworths could well see the end of two very promising TV careers in Woolie and Worth… or is there hope on the horizon? I caught up with them in The King’s Arms in Salford to catch up with them…

TV Scoop interview: Alex Hunter, How Mad Are You?

Friday, November 21st, 2008

emp_alex127x71.jpg

For the past two weeks I’ve reviewed Horizon’s How Mad Are You? two-parter. I had a few misgivings about the whole thing being presented in kind of almost reality TV-style format, but it was interesting, entertaining, inmformatiove and inspirational at times too. Just to remind you, ten people gathered together at a castle in the country. Three psychologists were watching their every move, and they had to guess which five partricipants had (or were currently) suffered from mental illness. Five were, five were not. Alex Hunter, one of the participants, got in touch with us so I asked her some question about the show. Some people thought it to be a bit distasteful, some thought it to be brilliant. But what did Alex, who experienced things first-hand, think? Have a read after the jump…

TV Scoop interview: Andrea Riseborough, The Devil’s Whore

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

DH+2.JPG

The other week I went along to The Devil’s Whore press screening, and lo, it was very good indeed. Channel 4 had also assembled some of the stars for a round-table interviews afterwards (alas, John Simm was on holiday). After saying hello to Dominic West (as you do), I managed to say hello to Andrea Riseborough. She looked nothing like she does onscreen (see Being Human, Long Walk To Finchley). She was fully gothed up – short black hair, deep, sensuous mascara and amazing shoes to boot. I was taken aback by her down-to-earthness – she thrust out a hand and said, “Hello mate, I’m Andrea. Nice to meet you” in her Geordie accent. She was really lovely and bright. Read the words that came out of her mouth over the jump.

TV Scoop Interview: Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin, creators of Outnumbered

Friday, November 14th, 2008

outnumberedinterview.jpgIt’s unofficially been Outnumbered week here at TV Scoop, thanks to our excitement that the second series gets underway this coming Saturday at 9.05pm on BBC One. A couple of days ago, Paul posted his interview with Hugh Dennis, who plays dad Pete, and I’ve had the chance to speak to the guys who came up with this charming and unique format in the first place – Andy Hamilton and Guy Jenkin. TV Scoop interview: Hugh Dennis, Outnumbered

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

outnumbered_5.jpg

Series two of Outnumbered starts this Saturday (BBC One, 15 November, 9pm) and here at TV Scoop we’re looking forward to it. It was one of the surprise hits of last year, and many of you loved it and its very real depiction of family life. In preparation, I spoke to star Hugh Dennis last week. He’s been around for a while has Hugh, and it’s really nice to see him in another smash. He actually came over as a really lovely, down-to-earth chap (as you kind of guessed he would), and revealed some interesting insights into the series. Read what he had to say after the jump…

TV Scoop interview: Nadine Velasquez, My Name Is Earl

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

nadine.jpg

Yesterday, I gave you the opportunity to have a good old look at Nadine Velasquez, the star of the very fine and funny My Name Is Earl. That was just a mere visual taster, as now we have the main course. Or something. Don’t want to confuse metaphors or naffing. Nadine, who plays stripper/cleaner Catalina in the show, was flown over by aeroplane to the United British Isles to promote the release of a DVD. It’s out now in all good DVD stores to buy for around £34.99 and spans four discs – the entire series three and loads of deleted scenes and cast interviews. So let’s get going… this is what happened when I was holed up in posh hotel room, on couch with the attractive Nadine Velasquez (fear not, she later called the police to unhole the room and escort me from the premises).

TV Scoop interview: Kelly Knox from Britain’s Missing Top Model

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

kelly_show1.jpg

Over the past five weeks we’ve brought you coverage of Britain’s Missing Top Model – the series that saw eight disabled young women compete for a modeling assignment. It’s been quite good, all in all, and has challenged viewers and contestants’ preconceptions about disabilities. On Tuesday night, north Londonder Kelly Knox won the competition, and we managed to get a chat with her on the phone. Now, Kelly has always been a pretty no-nonsense sort of girl and the fact that she was born without a left arm never really seemed to bother her. It was this forthright approach, as well as the ability to look great in a photograph, that probably won her the competition. Let’s see what she says…

TV Scoop interview: Kellie Moody, Britain’s Missing Top Model

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

153847.jpg

Last night Kellie Moody was eliminated from Britain’s Missing Top Model. Deaf from birth, Kellie started the competition in red-hot form; winning some challenges and impressing the judges in her photo shoots. But the thorny question of whether being deaf represented an explicit visual disability was always hanging around, and Kellie was always fighting a battle against the other girls and the judges on this score. There was no animosity between her and the girls, and she seemed well liked, but last night her performance in a speaking television advert – and her declining standard in photos – meant that she was given the push. We managed to catch up with her, so have a look after the jump for what she’s got to say.

TV Scoop interview: Jenny from Britain’s Missing Top Model

Thursday, July 17th, 2008

Britains_missing_top_model_jenny.jpg

If you’ve been reading my posts on Britain’s Missing Top Model, you’ll know that I’ve been enjoying the show so far. And I normally hate all that America’s Top British Model kind of stuff. Tuesday’s night show saw the elimination of Jenny (click here to read the review of that episode) – the American who, five years ago, was involved in an horrific car accident, rendering some of the most simple things many people do in their day-to-day lives very difficult indeed. A model before the accident, Jenny was so determined to succeed in this competition. I managed to bag an interview with her (now back in her native Seattle and very open and honest and lovely she was too). It’s worth a read…
