I like Phil and Kirstie of Location, Location, Location (Channel 4, Monday, 17 November, 9pm), I really do. They seem like a swell couple (not in that way of course). I think I’d like a night out with the pair of them. Me and Kirstie would get hammered and take the piss out of each other and Phil would stay sober and drive us all home. However, I’m not sure that they’ve got much call to be on the telly at the moment, offering property advise to a nation that can barely afford their bills, let alone a new gaff. However, Phil and Kirstie have thought of that, which is why next week’s show is ‘A Survival Guide’ as opposed to an aspirational look at the market.

I never watch shows like this. No, really. Never. In fact, not only do I not watch them, I can’t imagine why anyone would watch them. And yet, the fact remains that I did watch this show yesterday morning. Why? Because a friend told me that the house the family lived in was her dream house. And, while I’m not interested in toddler-baiting, I am interested in house porn.

Waffle, waffle, waffle, yadda, yadda, yadda. Blah, blah, blah. You’re sh** and I’m sick of listening to your pointless crap. You’re so boring that it’s like having my head filled with cement. It cannot hit the desk quick enough. You’re so boring, I just want to switch off and have an early night. The amount of vomit I want to bring up, every single time you speak, makes me think I’ll aim it toward you gaping, stupid mouth. I’ve had more interesting in things I’ve left in the end of condoms. You’re as pointless and frustrating as a failed w***. And do you know something else? I can decide whether I hate you or pity you. You’re a moron. I thought you were meant to be interesting but you’re actually of less use than lint in an arse-crack. Boo-hoo-hoo. Stop your crying… I though you were meant to be strong and bolshy you pathetic stain. I’ve come across more impressive toast-sweat! And this is what listening to the second half of Miss Naked Beauty (Channel 4, Tuesday, 4 November, 8pm) is like.

The arse has fallen out of the housing market and everyone is now scurrying under rocks to hide from the incoming winter weather. That said, most people I know, including me, have never had enough money to buy a house, so not much is new. However, TV has bolt upright and realised that property shows may have been aspirational once, but now, are really far out of reach for your average viewer. So with that, they’ve decided to move away from those looking to buy two houses in one go, for fear of rubbing our noses in the mess someone else made on the carpet. Of course, this means getting some chirpy Northener in for the ‘trust’ value, who will talk to us about making the most of what we’ve already got. That show is The Home Show (Channel 4, Wednesday, 5 November, 8pm).

Every time you hear that Gok Wan has a new TV vehicle, you can’t help but worry a little. I mean, How To Look Good Naked was, and is, a rousing success… but Gok’s Fashion Fix felt clunky and off-target. So what will Miss Naked Beauty (Channel 4, Tuesday, 21 October, 8pm) be like in it’s debut on the small screen? Before we can even begin dissecting, we have to acknowledge one thing – it features Myleene Klass.

For some weeks now, I haven’t missed an episode of DIY SOS (BBC One, Friday, 10 October, 8.30pm) thanks to a hole in the listings. I don’t like it, but I somehow keep tuning in. Now, because this show is so trivial, I can’t be bothered to check out its history and whatnot… so I’ll just have to dig up the dredges in my mind. I’m pretty sure that when this show started, it was just a run-of-the-mill ‘Do Your House Up’ programme, very much like Changing Rooms. However, over the years (the years I haven’t been watching it), something strange has happened in the shape of comedy sketches…

We all hate the tabloid obsession with television stars’ weight, but they just keep on and on and on, ramming these sour, empty stories down our throats like one of those ‘feeder’ men from a Channel 5 documentary. Purely as a kind of side-show fascination, then, here are some of the stories deemed article-worthy in the red-tops today…

Supernanny (Channel 4, Wednesday, 24 September, 8pm) is one of those inexplicable shows that I’ve seen with an alarming frequency even though I’m never sure whether I like it or not. Fact is, over the past few years, Ver Kidz have been getting straightened out by professionals because we proles just can’t cope. Maybe once these little bundles of ire would’ve been clipped ’round the ear, but no more. Now we have to send them to Brat Camp or get Jo-Jo in.

I’m so irritable at the moment that it’s not funny. I’m snappy, argumentative, unamused and generally not a good person to be around. Apart from a brief, fleeting hour in last night’s listings which saw me beaming like a teary medal winner on the podium in Beijing. What slot was this? Why, if the headline didn’t give it away (which, in fairness, it really should’ve), it was the slot that aired How to Look Good Naked (Channel 4, Thursday, 28 August, 8pm)

Kim and Aggie have been away from our screens for some time now and a while back, Channel 4 foolishly announced that the pair would be rationed and then culled with an air of ‘really, this sort of thing isn’t doing it for us anymore‘. Frankly, that’s ridiculous as this pair of riotous gigglers are just what Channel 4 need to shed a little light amongst the po-faced property shows and rubbish comedy. So last night, How Clean Is Your House? (Channel 4, Wednesday, 27 August, 8.30pm) sneaked back to our screen with a noticeable absence of fanfare.

Before we get to the project for this week we have to be subjected to the usual recap, which in the case of KMATBTP is not as annoying as it could be on account of the slight variations he manages to introduce each week. So with only the briefest of nods to the backstory we’ve heard before, it’s on with the business at hand: the battle of the out-of-town superstore versus the High Street; and the redesign of the town square and market.

The regeneration of Castleford moved from the river to the community spaces this week, as the residents focussed on revitalising three of the most derelict areas of the town – the old allotments at Cutsyke, the old and heavily vandalised Victorian park at Airedale Green and the village green at New Fryston. In two of these three areas, the residents were heavily involved in the design and planning of the new space and their wishes, and the needs of their microcommunities were paramount in the decision-making process. In the third, an international designer was shipped in from out of town and given carte blanche. The difference, in both the final results and their effects on the communities, was stark.

Watching the dregs of Gok Wan’s Fashion Fix last night, I really wondered whether Gok’s star had faded ever so slightly. I like the guy, and I think he’s pretty amazing in How To Look Good Naked. It’s a very good show, and, unlike other hideous makeover shows, Gok is extremely skilled at making people feel very good about themselves. He’s just got this twinkle in his eye, and has this kind of ‘f**** everyone attitude’ that spreads like wildfire. So yes, How To Look Good Naked is very good, if a little formulaic. Gok Wan’s Fashion Fix, on the other hand, hasn’t really captured the imagine quite so much. Why’s that then?

Castleford, 12 miles from Leeds in West Yorkshire and with 38,000 inhabitants, was a town on the slide. Its 5 mines, glassworks and 2 chemical factories are gone and its market is in severe decline. But the people of Castleford remain unbowed by their misfortune. They are unusually committed to making it a better place by revitalising the town centre, redeveloping derelict land and enabling both locals and visitors to exploit the full potential of the views along the banks of the rivers Calder and Aire.
It was this determination, dedication and vision, not to mention the extraordinary pride in their community, that led to Castleford being chosen, five years ago, as the focus for an unprecedented urban renewal initiative, driven by Channel 4, along with local community, civic groups and district council members.

Gok Wan has admitted that he needs to go to a counsellor when he’s doing How To Look Good Naked. Sorry if you thought this was going to be some tale of him going through some saucy equivalent of therapy, which involves sitting in the nip on an expensive leather chaise longue. So, what’s this therapy about? Well, minus ten points to anyone who thought that Gok needed his bumps-soothing after the horror of seeing the various participants of his show. If you’ve seen the show, you’ll know that Mr Wan is very good at doing people a load of good… unlike a certain Aryan wet-dream and her team of butchers. So what’s up with him then? Prepare to coo “aaawwww”.

I had nightmares last night. I dreamt a wrinkled old man who looked a bit like Alice Cooper, except he was wearing a blond wig and a black PVC dominatrix (sic) outfit was walking towards me carrying a whip. Then I realised I was still awake and watching Virgin 1. Which made the nightmare worse, if anything. It’s going to be a challenge reviewing this for a family website I can tell you. My first difficulty was finding a photo to illustrate it. Well, you can imagine. With safe search turned off and a search string like “kinky and proud virgin”
So fair warning. If you’re at all prudish about umm… variety in human sexual behaviour then don’t jump the cut. But if you want to find out, among other things, what licing is, or what people get up to at the pony club, then follow me.

Rogue Restaurants (BBC One, Thursday, 7 August, 8.30pm) has had TVScoop readers in a bit of a tizz. Some have quite enjoyed it as throwaway fluff, whilst others have hollered “Pure sensationalism!”, “This is the worst kind of smug, patronising consumer show that has no place on the BBC, and would even get short shrift from Five in a perfect world.” Hardly fence-sitting comments. Naturally, I felt like I had to become an investigative journalist (this meant sitting on my couch in disguise, filming my telly with a hidden camera and watching back the footage in the back of a van… as opposed to simply watching it on iPlayer) and find out what this show was really like.

Whatever you think of Kevin McCloud, you have to admire his sheer bloody nerve and enthusiasm. He’s stood by and watched numerous people building houses in Grand Designs and then, to put his money where his mouth is, he went and built himself a house live on telly. What could be bigger than that? Well, ladies and gentleman, how about a whole town? That’s right, in Kevin McCloud and the Big Town Plan (Channel 4, Monday, 11 August, 9pm) will watch Castleford undergo a most extraordinary social experiment.

I love Grand Designs. The people who think up these amazing projects are all mad, but it’s my kind of madness. Something I can relate to. They have a dream, and they’ll dig up half of England, pour thousands of tons of concrete, or mortgage their descendants for three hundred and fifty years to realise it. Or in the case of Dean Marks, whose dream for as long as he can remember was to live in a church, he’ll start working even before he legally owns the property.

Britain’s Missing Top Model has, for my money, been the surprise hit of the year. When seeing the trailers, my knee-jerk reaction was to yell ‘exploitative rubbish!’ at the telly. I tuned in to prove myself right and, quite spectacularly proved myself wrong. It has been a really good, interesting and entertaining series. Now we know the winner, surely we’d all… have on… I haven’t paced this sentence right at all… erm… Britain’s Missing Top Model: What Happened Next (BBC Three, Tuesday, 5 August, 9pm) everybody!
