Why is Philip Glenister STILL apologising for Keeley Hawes?

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

ashes460[1].jpg

As Our John rightly said a bit earlier, Ashes To Ashes is back for a second series next week. That’s good news even though, as John said, the first series wasn’t super-brilliant. Still, it was a cut above most TV drama series out there, containing as it did some magical moments. We know that this is Gene Hunt’s last series (or is it?) so there’s much anticipation about what’s going to happen. In readiness, the man himself and friend of TV Scoop, Philip Glenister (not really, I just made that up because we’ve interviewed him a few times before), has been speaking. And he’s still defending Keeley Hawes’ acting skills. Is Keeley Hawes as Alex Drake still up for debate? I didn’t realise.

Set The Video: Ashes to Ashes, BBC One, Monday 20 April, 9pm

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

a2a_s02_group.jpgOK so I had a bit of fun with you this morning pretending that the snooker is the thing we’ve all been waiting for, when really it’s this. Now I don’t mind admitting that I was firmly in the “disappointed” camp with A2A series 1. On the disappointed spectrum my feelings didn’t approach the heights of last weekend’s Red Dwarf malarkey, or even the tragic waste of one of the year’s three specials that was the Easter Doctor Who. No it was more of a vague feeling of unease that it was not as good as it could have been and had somehow lost its way from the heights of the old Life on Mars. So given my reservations last time round, why am I looking forward to this so much?

Trailer Trash: Ashes To Ashes, series two, BBC One

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

ashestoashes[1].jpg

It’s still a few weeks away yet, but the Ashes To Ashes series two publicty juggernaut is in full effect. Earlier on in the week I posted up some interesting tidbits culled from the press pack, and now I see a trailer from yer actual Ashes To Ashes is now online. It’s quite good too. Bit same-old-same-old but it does look great. One thing that struck me while watching it – the Eighties were an insane decade. In a matter of a year or two, the drudgery of the early 1980s turned into a day-glo, coke-snorting, money-shitting, multi-colour riot. How did that happen? Anyway, the trailer’s after the jump. Do you agree with me that the coke dealer in the club looks a bit like Paul Daniels?

What I learned from the Ashes To Ashes press pack

Ashes To Ashes s2.jpg

Later in April Ashes To Ashes returns for a second series and last week I got sent a press pack. It was interesting stuff, full of little teasers for the new series. I liked the first series, but not as much as Life On Mars. Still, at its best, Ashes To Ashes was fantastic television. Now, what we know about the second series is that this will be Philip Glenister’s last. We also know that there will be a new cop character, Supermac, and, revealed after the jump, another new, mysterious character sends DCI Drake’s head into a spin. Read on for more!

Re-live Children In Need’s Top Gear meets Ashes To Ashes

Monday, November 17th, 2008

keeley7.jpg

I didn’t really watch Children In Need on Friday night, but there’s always one or two things that are worth catching up on. Anna has already reported on the Doctor Who Christmas trailer, which received its premiere during the show, but the other thing I wanted to see was the bit where Gene Hunt met Richard Hammond. Not bad at all – Hunt called Hammond, in the Ashes To Ashes meets Top Gear skit, a “miniature scrotum”. Have a look over the jump…

Ashes To Ashes introduces brand-new character for second series

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008

gene_car_lead_396x531[1].jpg

Two posts on Life On Mars-related stuff this morning, and that’s AOK with me. I like LOM very much indeed and even Ashes To Ashes. I know that, to many it was a huge disappointment, but I enjoyed it – big, glossy, silly, brilliant in places and Keeley Hawes. Keeley Hawes was seriously not that bad. Honestly. The thing that bothered me about ATA was Gene Hunt. He’s an amazing character, but he was trotting out the same old lines as he was in Life On Mars. The Gene Genie was over-egged in my opinion. Anyway, the second series has just begun filming and, while plot lines are obviously scarce, there is one bit of exciting news.

Ashley Pharaoh reveals Ashes To Ashes series two direction

ep6.jpg

We’re back to last Thursday’s Bonekickers event now. Writers Ashley Pharoah and Matthew Graham have done quite a job in a) coming up with Life On Mars, b) coming up with Ashes To Ashes, and now c) coming up with Bonekickers. Life On Mars, obviously, is very close to our hearts and rightly goes down as a TV classic, while Ashes To Ashes, well, hmmm. It was good wasn’t it, but nowhere near as good as its predecessor. It’s still a conversation starter though, and people still want to know all about it, as the Bonekickers event proved. After the screening, there was a Q&A with Mr Pharaoh, and, inevitably, the subject of Ashes To Ashes series two popped up, have a look after the jump to see what he said, it’s quite interesting.

Meet Philip Glenister at Ashes To Ashes signing

Friday, May 2nd, 2008

glenister-signing.jpgDid you like Ashes To Ashes? Most of TVScoop did. Some of them (ie me) was too frightened to join in. Anyway, the big success story from Ashes To Ashes and Life On Mars is the rise of Phil Glenister. Glenister has become a sensation and won many fans… who now have the chance to meet him. You want in?

Well, there’s no secret handshake or map to his house, rather, Glenister will be meeting fans during a DVD signing session in HMV Oxford Street next Tuesday (6 May). He will be signing copies of the newly released ‘Ashes to Ashes: Series One’ on DVD in store from 1pm, so don’t miss this fantastic opportunity to roll across the desk he’s sat at with a water pistol shouting “you’re surrounded by armed bastards!” Read our interview with the great man here.

Webwatch: Ashes to Ashes, Series 2 (and 3?)

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

a2a_stevestrange.jpgFor those unaware, Ian Wylie is the TV Editor of the Manchester Evening News. Part of his extensive output is an entertaining (if occasionally hyperbolic) blog about all things TV. He outdid himself this week with an extremely long and detailed report from a BBC Writersroom presentation by Ashes to Ashes creators Ashley Pharaoh and Matthew Graham, in which they discussed the hidden meanings of the first series, and their plans for the future. Click through for some highlights and a link to the original article.

Ashes to Ashes: Episode 8 soundtrack

Friday, March 28th, 2008

quattro_2.jpegThose nice lads and lasses at the BBC have deigned to reinstate the A2A track list for us this week (and filled in last week’s too, belatedly) even though this time round they needn’t have bothered. With only three tracks to spot I’d already scored a full house before sitting down at the puter.

TV Review: Ashes to Ashes, BBC One, Thursday 27 March, 9pm

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

a2a_little_alex.jpgI was never a fan of those old-fashioned detective dramas where you never knew what was going on until the final act, when the sleuth would wander up and down the drawing room puffing away on his pipe while he explained the intricate plot to the assembled cast and pointed out whodunnit, but I did appreciate that with all the “goodies” crammed into the last few minutes of drama, the audience was left with a satisfied feeling and believed they’d been well entertained, even if the early part of the show had been slightly overlong and tedious. I’m not saying that’s a perfect analogy for tonight’s series finale, but I will say this: if the other seven episodes had been as good as the last one, I would have had nothing to complain about.

Ashes to Ashes: Second series confirmed

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

a2a_little_gene.jpgNot that there was ever really much doubt, but in advance of tonight’s final instalment, the Beeb have graciously let everyone off the hook by announcing earlier today that Ashes to Ashes Mark 2 has been given the green light and will start filming in the summer. Naturally we’ll have to wait until 2009 to see the results, and indeed a wait is still in order for anything remotely resembling details of the second series, as today’s announcement was almost as inscrutable as series 1 has been!

F40.jpgBack to the original plan this week – compiling the track list from the show itself – since for some reason the Beeb’s own episode guide is missing the details this time round. I definitely need your help with at least one track, and there may be more I’ve missed, so click through to see if you can catch me out again. It’s just like old times.

TV Review: Ashes to Ashes, BBC One, Thursday 20 March, 9pm

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

a2a_alex_clown.jpgThis week’s crime – the shooting and wounding of charity fundraiser Gill Hollis – was a fairly stolid and transparent affair, but the tingling presence of the clown stepped up another notch, promising Alex that “someone would be taken,” the sexual tension between Hunt and Drake also ratcheted up, and the humour made a welcome return to the levels of the very first episode.

Ashes to Ashes: Episode 6 soundtrack

blackcab.jpgWas it just me or did there seem to be an awful lot of repeated music in last nights A2A soundtrack? When we’re repeatedly told everything is significant, what is it that’s significant about these tracks?

It can’t be as simple as running out of decent, recognisable, catchy 80s vibes can it? Jump over the cut for the list of this week’s tracks, together with a recap of where we’ve heard them before, and the usual YouTubeyness.

TV Review: Ashes to Ashes, BBC One, Thursday 13 March, 9pm

Thursday, March 13th, 2008

a2a_alex_gene.jpgIt’s no secret I’ve not been *that* enamoured of Ashes to Ashes so far. Barring the first episode, I think it’s gone rapidly down hill ever since.

No such qualms with tonight’s instalment though: they really wound the wick up on this one, whether it be shocks, creepy scariness, the quality of the crime subplot, or the hints of what’s going on with Alex. The whole thing came alive for me again tonight. Absolutely top stuff.

Ashes to Ashes: Episode 5 soundtrack

Friday, March 7th, 2008

triumph_toledo.jpgMuch of the music for Episode 5 was concentrated in the club scenes, not surprisingly I suppose, and in the first quarter, but for me that left the rest of the hour feeling a little empty music-wise.

So much so that twice, when a track finally did strike up, it caught me off-guard. Even so, I think I managed to catch the scenes right, and reading them back I think you’ll agree the writers have done a cracking job of matching the song titles to the action this week. See what you think.

a2a_chris_ray.jpgAttending a post mortem, DI Drake comes over all queasy when she realises the victim died from a single shot to the head. Is that a man on the slab, or her? Hunt has no time for wusses. He’s convinced Simon Neary – notorious pimp and drug baron – is the killer, and when the team get a location for Neary’s latest shady deal, they leave mob handed for the stake out.

Ashes to Ashes: Episode 4 soundtrack

TV Review: Ashes to Ashes, BBC One, Thursday 28 February, 9pm

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

a2a_gene.jpgFinally, some concrete progress on the real story of Ashes to Ashes. The fact that there was a solid police story at the back of it was a bonus too of course, but the threads of Alex’s alternative world started to pull together tonight, almost for the first time, and some of those threads were alarmingly dirty. This could turn out to be a case of “be careful what you wish for.”

Meanwhile there’s a murder to be solved. A man killed in a factory accident turns out to have died from a blow with a blunt instrument shortly before he fell. He was Martin Kennedy and had appointments with the “RWF” littering his diary. Shaz helpfully fills in the blanks: Revolutionary Workers Front. Before a full autopsy can be carried out “the coroner” snatches the body. Only it takes eight of his heavies to lift the coffin. All is not well in Geneland.
