The world's first fully remote controlled Black Cab unveiled in London today by creator Engineer James Brighton to mark the launch of Driving Wars, a brand new extreme Driving Show presented by Colin Murray - the show airs on Dave on Wednesday 19th October at 9pm .Pix.Tim Anderson 14.10.11

Here’s a tech gadget you probably wouldn’t want to take down the park on a Sunday – not unless you wanted terrified kids fleeing for their lives. Described as the ‘ultimate boy’s toy’ it’s a full-sized London Black Cab with one big difference. It’s controlled by a handheld remote.

For a ‘gadget’ weighing just shy of two tonnes and capable of hitting 80mph, click-happy controllers will have a remarkable level of authority over steering control, forward and reverse gearing, a sensitive braking system and a fully proportional throttle.

And Londoners were given a glimpse of the vehicle when it pulled up outside the O2 arena, alongside its driver!  The brainchild of engineering wizard Dr. James Brighton, it  marks the launch of Driving Wars, a brand new extreme driving show due to hit Dave on Wednesday, October 19th. Dr Brighton and the Driving Wars team – including presenter Colin Murray – spent two months working on the cab which is controlled via a hand held control console.

Driving Wars invites members of the public to take to the remote controls of a series of specially customised real cars in order to recreate moments of motoring magic from TV and cinema.  According to Dave, it promises to be a heady cocktail of burnt rubber, squealing tyres and spectacular pyrotechnics.

TV Review: Argumental, Dave, Monday 17 October, 9.40pm

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

argumental1.jpgWhen the marketing bods at a rather dull and indistinct digital channel decided that it would be a wonderful idea to rebrand as ‘Dave’, there must have been many within the organisation, as well as us mere on-lookers, who though it a little… well, risky. But look at it now! All grown up with great comedy repeats and – whodathunk it – their very own original content! But will anyone bother to seek out Dave to watch yet another comedy panel show? If the quality of tonight’s opening episode of Argumental is anything to go by, they should do.

TV Scoop interview: Rufus Hound, Argumental

Stephen Fry called him, “The rich man’s Simon Pegg” and he’s undoubtedly the owner of the best facial appendage in showbusiness. Rufus Hound is a funny man and he’s not on television nearly enough, but Dave (you know, the channel Dave not a random bloke called Dave) is putting that right. Rufus is appearing alongside Marcus Brigstocke as a team captain in new panel show, Argumental (tonight, Monday 27 October, 9.40pm). John Sergeant hosts and lots of top-name comedians are onboard. Looks like fun and games and laughter. I caught up with Rufus during his big press junket, still suffering from a massive cold. He was very cool and funny, though, and I enjoyed speaking with him. You can read he said to me after the jump.

Trailer Trash: Argumental, Dave

What’s this? Dave producing its own programmes. It’s very true. The running joke people like Stephen Fry and Jeremy Clarkson make is that if you’ve missed an episode of QI or Top Gear, don’t worry… it’ll soon appear on Dave. There’s a new panel show on next Monday night called Argumental (see what they did there?), which features John Sergeant as host and Marcus Brigstocke and Rufus Hound as team captains. Basically, the captains and their guests have to argue for or against a subject that John sets them. Nothing too world changing there, but judging by the clip (which you can see be clicking here) it all looks rather fun and a laugh, and there are some decent guests booked in to appear.

John Cleese is back on the telly

Thursday, September 18th, 2008

cleese.jpgIt’s been a while, but Cleese is back on the telly. It’s the first TV he’s done since that series ‘The Human Face’ in 2001, which I seem to remember also unexpectedly starred Elizabeth Hurley. Like other ageing comedy icons (Stephen Fry), he has developed a taste for the technical – you can follow him on Twitter for goodness sake… so it’s really no huge surprise to learn that he’s going to be presenting a show about gadgets on Dave, the home of manly nostalgia.

The Dave channel’s name, slogan, adverts – why?

I hate almost everything about the Dave channel. I have nothing against the Top Gear repeats, or the BBC panel shows that they broadcast; in fact I like them. I think Dave puts out more shows I enjoy than any other channel, except for Dave+1 which has at least as many good programmes.

Other than the programmes themselves though, almost everything about Dave is just wrong.

As if Dave wasn’t manly enough, they now have Alpha Male Sunday Mornings

Friday, November 2nd, 2007

dave_tv.JPGAlthough I have an attitude about why the channel Dave even exists, I have to admit, I’ve been watching it. In fact, I watched it all this morning. From Top Gear to Ray Mears’s World of Survival, I sat there and enjoyed a “testosterone filled” couple of hours. However, when an promotional advert popped up for Dave’s new Alpha Male Sunday Mornings, I wanted to vomit. A montage of bug eating, car racing, bush whacking macho men flashed on the screen, with the commentator declaring that Sunday was now for all things *manly* and that manly men could now enjoy manly TV shows every Sunday on Dave. What the rest of the shows are, I’m not sure. Maybe they think that the rest of the programming is just too gosh darn Metrosexual and effeminate.

As ITV has already established that Dave is for 16-24-year-old men, and that it’s the “home of witty banter”, having a manly Sunday morning just seems like over kill. We all know that that specific demographic is a hard to one to pin-down and reach out to, however, the WE MAN HEAR US ROAR (and down whole grasshoppers without chewing) bit is officially nauseating.
