Michael C. Hall has cancer

Friday, January 15th, 2010

Michael-C-Hall_-.jpgBad news TV Scoopers. One of our favourites, Michael C. Hall, has got cancer. When an actor or TV personality gets ill, as TV critics, we’re forced into being nice to make up for all the nasty things we’ve said to them (and besides, it isn’t really a time for joking is it?) That said, this news is particularly sad because he’s so damn good (Dexter, Six Feet Under anyone?).

Dexter reveals creepy series four promo poster

Dexter-Morgan-1574.jpg

OK, so we’re into the last third of the third series of Dexter in this country, and we’re not going to see series four until next year on FX, but here’s a little nugget that should whet the appetite. Dexter is one of of my favourite shows, but in this series it pains me to say that it hasn’t been the best. Michael C Hall and Jennifer Carpenter are still brilliant, and I still love the little bubbling storylines involving Laguerta, Batista and Masuka, but the core storyline involving Dexter and Prado had run its course after a couple of episodes. Series four? This much I know – John Lithgow will be joining the cast as a serial killer who Dexter becomes interested in, and Lundy returns. But the biggest talking point is Dexter becoming a father, and this is what this slightly creepy promo poster uses as its backdrop. Have a look after the jump.

Dexter and Miguel sitting in a tree. K-I-S-S-I-N-G. They are now officially buddies. Miguel knows what Dexter did to Ethan Turner, Dexter knows that Miguel knows. But they’re fishing, they buddies and Miguel actually likes what Dexter is doing. So much so that Miguel wishes he could do what Dexter does. He sees what Dexter is and together, he stated in this episode, they could make a real difference, ridding Miami of the bad guys. They are the new Batman and Robin. This can’t be right.

Dexter and his own family. It doesn’t quite fit does it? We’re not the only ones who think that either. Dexter himself is even starting to get freaked out about his impending marriage, especially when Rita and Miguel’s wife suggested that Rita sell her place and Dexter sell his and they move into something bigger and more spacious. Together. Makes perfect sense to us cohabiters on the outside looking in, but Dexter wasn’t buying it. His place, after all, is where he stakes his victims out, compiles evidence against them and stores evidence . Soon he would have to give this all up. Thank goodness he had a new ‘project’ on the go.

Up until now Dexter has been trying to clear up the mess of a younger DA’s brother’s murder, but he had other things to worry about. In a discussion with Rita and the kids he blurted out a botched proposal of marriage. Rita said no. This was a surprise. Rita’s kids were weirded out as well. So there was Dexter, in control of everything… apart from his home life.

Dexter is on the look-out for his next prey, and during a trip to the supermarket with his pregnant girlfriend Rita, he spotted a man talking to Rita’s daughter Astor in a creepy way. His vengeance radar fully switched on, Dexter took his number plate details just in case. Was this just an innocent conversation between a man looking for the Cheerios in a supermarket and a young girl? Of course it wasn’t. Dexter’s animal instincts usually are never wrong.

You’ve got to love Debs. In my interview with Jennifer Carpenter a few weeks ago she told me that she enjoyed coming up with new combinations of swear words. How’s about this for starters? “Kind of a c****, aren’t you?” she asked the Internal Affairs woman who tried to lure her to snitching on one of her colleagues by using some tough tactics. “I’ve gone through every scum-sucking ball sack of a pimp I know… you are my last-ditch ass-fucked effort!” she pleaded to a potential informant. So Debs had it rough in last night’s episode, but so did her brother too.

Life is good for Dexter. He managed to get rid of the man who could have brought him down (Doakes), got rid of the woman who could have brought him down (Lila) and processed the fact that his beloved step-father’s code may not have been all it was cracked up to be. With all these obstacles out of the way, Dexter was merrily going about his business – enjoying his time with Rita, going to Dad’s Day with Rita’s kids, enjoying his sister Debs’ new, short haircut… and killing people without compunction. Dexter, it’s good to have you back.

Trailer Trash: Dexter, series three

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

dexter3poster.jpg

Further to our interviews with Michael C Hall and Jennifer Carpenter (go here and her respectively to have a read), here’s a teaser trailer for the new, third series of Dexter, which starts this Friday (24 April) on FX, at 10pm. Let’s set the scene – Dexter has managed to rid himself of the persistant Doakes and the nutcake that was Lila, and now is free to do as he pleases. Which is dangerous, especially now that Harry’s code doesn’t amount to a hill of beans either. In the first episode he’s on the warpath again, but his latest conquest leads him into a whole new world. Trailer’s after the jump…

TV Scoop interview: Jennifer Carpenter, Dexter

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

jennifercarpenter.jpg

One of the great things about Dexter is that it’s not just about Dexter. Well it is, but you know what I mean. The peripheral characters in his world are just so well written and each has their own little stories going on. Laguerta, Rita, Angel… and Debs. As Dexter’s sister, Debs couldn’t be more different to her brother – abrasive, foul-mouthed and hugely emotional. I love Deborah. She’s such a great character, and I got a chance to talk to the actress who plays her – Jennifer Carpenter – the same day I chatted to her offscreen hubby, Michael C Hall. I have to say she was very lovely, down to Earth and a real laugh – a bit nervous about the prospect of going on Loose Women but also very excited about shopping in Topshop. Read what she had to say after the jump, but in the meantime store in your brains that series three of Dexter starts on FX this Friday (24 April) on FX, at 10pm.

TV Scoop interview: Michael C Hall, Dexter

Monday, April 20th, 2009

Dexter-Morgan-1574.jpg

When the call came that I had managed to get some time with Michael C Hall I could hardly contain myself. Michael C Hall on TV Scoop! You can’t get better than that. He came to my notice as an outstanding actor in Six Feet Under, and he’s carried on the good work in Dexter, playing everyone’ favourite vigilante serial killer. Actually, there’s only one vigilante serial killer on the box, so that makes it kind of easy. Series three starts on FX this Friday (24 April) at 10pm. All my friends have asked me what he was like, and I’ve told them that he was a really nice guy. Listening back to the interview tape he has such a deep, resonant voice. He smiles a lot too – not in the creepy Dexter way. Which is a good thing. Read what he had to say after the jump…

TV Review: Dexter: Season 2 Finale, ITV1, Thursday, 26 March, 10.35pm

Friday, March 27th, 2009

dexter season2 finale.jpgOriginally, I wasn’t going to review last night’s Dexter (ITV1, Thursday, 26 March, 10.35pm) because Mr Hirons Editor Sir did such a fine job. However, after watching it, I needed to add my thoughts to the fore. Fact is, I have this horrible feeling that no-one is watching it because… well… it’s on ITV1. The second series closed last night and it pains me to think of TV lovers missing out on such brilliant television. Last night’s show, dubbed ‘The British Invasion’, had it all. I mean ‘all’ too. Sex, murder, huge plot line, great acting, closure… and the greatest ‘last words’ of any TV character ever.

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

Dexter S2 Packshot.jpg

As regular readers will know, we here at TV Scoop love a bit of Dexter, the show that features Michael C Hall playing a serial killer with a difference. We voted it very highly in our Top 50 last year (go here to have a look) and with series three just around the corner on FX (check back later on for interviews with Michael C Hall and Jennifer Carpenter) it seems only right that we offer you the chance to win three series two boxsets, which has all the episodes as well as some lovely extras. To win one go over the jump and answer the easy question. Couldn’t be simpler!

Set The Video: Dexter, ITV1, Thursday, 12 February, 10.35pm

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

12_02_DEXTER_13.jpgThe second series of Dexter (ITV1, Thursday, 12 February, 10.35pm), thus far, has been every bit as thrilling as the first… albeit, with a slight twist. You see, for those who haven’t been on the ball with it this season, Dexter is no longer wrestling with just his inner turmoil, but rather, an turmoil that’s rapidly spilling out. In new character Lila, we’re seeing Dexter unveiled, which is providing even more for us humbled viewers to sink our teeth into. This week’s episode is amusingly called Dex, Lies and Videotape and we’ve got a twist on our hands.

Dexter has married his sister!

Monday, January 12th, 2009

Dexter Dating Sister.jpgHey boys and girls! Ever watched Dexter and thought ‘Prrrrr… what I’d do to him given half a chance…‘. There’s no two-ways about it… Michael C. Hall is a handsome chap. Well, the bad news for those of you who fancy him, is that he just got married. The weirder news is that he’s got married to his sister! Of course, I don’t mean that he’s really got married to his sibling, but rather his co-star Jennifer Carpenter, who plays his sister in the show.

TV Scoop’s Best TV Moments of 2008: Dexter, FX

Monday, December 29th, 2008

Dexter has been marvellous this year (we voted it as number three in our end-of-year Top 50), and some bright spark has put the entire finale episode of series two online (albeit a shortened version). It was a great episode – the fate of Lila was decided, as was the future course of Dexter, everyone’s favourite serial killer. So sit back, have a look over the jump and fill your boots.

TV Scoop’s Television Top 50 2008, Number Three: Dexter (FX)

Thursday, December 18th, 2008

Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for TV Scoop Top 50 Logo.jpg

American TV has been a bit hit-and-miss during the past few years. Established, global successes like The Sopranos and Sex And The City ended their hugely-successful runs, and the networks struggled to replace them. Until now. Two thousand and eight seemed to be when the new generation of US drama really took over the mantle. There was The Wire (I’m saving that for some boxset heaven at some point next year), the brilliant Mad Men and the dark Breaking Bad. But our favourite of the US imports this year was, by some margin, series two of Dexter.

Dexter signed up for two more series

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

I read some news on The Hollywood Reporter this morning (via The Medium Is Not Enough) that one of my favourite shows, if not my favourite, has been signed up for two more series. In the US Dexter is already tearing into its third series, so add two and you get… five. I knew my maths wasn’t failing me. Very good news indeed. Not the maths bit, but about Dexter.

Fan makes his own Jewish version of Dexter opening credits

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

dexter45.jpg

For me, the opening credits to Dexter are the best in the business. There’s a really seductive, swooning soundtrack that’s allied to ambiguous images of Dexter himself eating his breakfast all in gory, ketchup-dripping detail. But God bless the internet – a Jewish Dexter fan has made his own version. Dan Schanler is the young man’s name and he has produced something rather brilliant – everything is Kosher and instead of a t-shirt being pulled tightly over his head, he puts on his traditional Jewish clothing (sorry for my ignorance, but I’m not sure what these items of clothing are called). Have a look over the jump, where you’ll find the original credits as well as Dan’s exellent version.

Dexter series three: What the critics said

Monday, September 29th, 2008

Dexpromo.jpg

No sooner has series two of Dexter finished on FX in the UK, series three started last night. In the US, that is. I’ve got a feeling that we’re going to have to wait a long time until it comes over to these shores (some channels’ refreshing new stance on turnaround times might not extend to this fabulous series), but start it did nonetheless and, as usual, I was interested to see the critical response. I’ve seen the first episode and it’s terrific – like slipping on your favourite pair of slippers, so instantly familiar and comfy are the characters and locale. Click over the jump to see what everyone thought of the series three opener.
