I’m not ashamed to admit that I have a massive girl crush on Dawn Porter.
Unlike many TV presenters/journalists she makes programmes that appeal to many of us and look at the less normal things in life, and she’s also not afraid to venture into the unknown.
She’s tried nearly every diet under the sun for Supersize vs Superskinny and stripped off to show us that we don’t need to be sticks to look good.
She’s also taken on Geisha lessons to show us how important this culture is in Japan and debunk all the associations many of us had with this, in Geisha Girl.
And of course Extreme Wife was another programme she succeeded with, showing us the way other people decide to live.
I could go on for hours talking about all the great shows she’s made but instead I thought I’d show you with some of her shows in pictures.

Breast cancer is the elephant in the room for many women. Ignorance through fear often seems preferable to the unpalatable truth that one in nine women will, at some point, develop the disease. Add to the mix a family history of breast cancer and a couple of faulty genes, and the liklihood of developing the disease rockets to 80 per cent. For Dawn – whose mother and great-grandmother both died of breast cancer as young women – these statistics must have seemed terrifying. But this very personal documentary two-parter is about much more than scare tactics; it both reinforces the message that knowledge is power and shows there can be life beyond cancer.

Now, we all know that there are many many many many many many fans of Dawn Porter out there, so I’m sure they will be settling down in fron the tellybox tonight. For the uninitiated, Dawn is a female ladyperson who is also a journalist and broadcaster. She makes smart, entertaining, funny and sometimes inspirational documentaries that tend to focus on female-centric subjects like weight, body image and dating. Although to be fair, these issues are not just for girls – they’re pretty much for everyone. Anyway, whenever she’s on telly we get so much response from readers; they love her. So now, after a bit of a break, Dawn is back. And her new two-part series starts on Sky1 tonight. Have a read over the jump to see what she’s going to be up to.

Of all of Dawn Porter’s new series on Channel 4, this was the one I was looking forward to the most. She’d covered free-love, which ticked the box for all those that just want to ogle our Dawn, as well as investigating the Geisha and mail-order brides. As meaty or flighty as the subjects were, the last in the current series, Dawn Porter: Polygamist’s Wife (Channel 4, Tuesday, 21 October, 10pm) was always going to be the most revealing. Polygamists are often derided and seen as ‘cultish’, as testified by the opening bars of this show, showing clips of a ‘sect’ that was stormed by federal agents… but was Dawn going into a seedy den, or would she find the lighter side of Mormon living? Thankfully, it erred more on the latter, even if it was filled with weird.

As you’re probably aware, we like Dawn Porter on TV Scoop. As TV goes, she’s pretty insightful and manages to balance the investigative stuff with some cheer. It’s a rare thing indeed! Last night, Porter continued her look at love from the fringes, in Dawn Porter: Geisha Girl (Channel 4, Tuesday, 7 October, 10pm) which saw Dawn travelling to Japan to meet those mysterious and beautiful Geisha… but is there something sinister pulling the strings?

Dawn Porter gets so close to her subjects that sometimes, it’s easy to think that a little part of her is lost forever to them. Be it her look into the world of free love, or the one where she got naked on an open-top bus… Dawn Porter doesn’t so much immerse herself in her investigations, but belly-flops in and to hell with the consequences! So with that, she’ll have to tread a little more carefully in Dawn Porter: Geisha Girl (Channel 4, Tuesday, 14 October, 10pm)…

Ms Porter has been on a seemingly perilous journey into the heart of love of late, going to all the places where paranoia and desperation are bedfellows. I mean, most people just go down the pub, maybe a club afterwards, and hope that the Gilette Mach 3 and aftershave will work the magic – and maybe enough pints to convince you, and your prospective mate, that you are in fact a wonderful dancer and a very charming man indeed. However, what happens when you’re all out of ideas? Dawn Porter: Mail Order Bride (Channel 4, Tuesday, 7 October, 10pm) went to find out.

Dawn Porter’s a game lass, who will throw herself headfirst into the challenge of unravelling the secrets surrounding sex… or should I say, some of the fringes of the sexual appetite. Of course, her new series on Channel 4 has seen her taking a step back from the experiences, and the physical aspects to scratch the surface to find what happens emotionally. Her last show saw her indulging in some Free Love, next week, she’s Dawn Porter: Mail Order Bride (Channel 4, Tuesday, 7 October, 10pm).

“Why can’t I just have a proper job?” asks Dawn Porter as she embarks on her next investigation into modern-day love and relationships. Ah, Dawn Porter. People can’t get enough of her. They love her. They think she’s a bit saucy. They think she has a glint in her eye at all times. They think all sorts of things about her (check her myspace site for full-on fanboy devotion). But there’s more to Dawn than just a coquettish grin and her serious amounts of sass. Her highly entertaining BBC Three series (Dawn Gets…) proved that she’s an engaging and open host, and it was great to have her back on our screens last night having made the switch to Channel 4. So what kind of mischief would she be getting herself into in this series?

Oh we love a bit of Dawn Porter here on TV Scoop. She makes the world a happier place, she dives into her own special brand of naughties investigative journalism with infectious amounts of gusto and I genuinely think she makes hitherto tricky and personal subjects accessible and, in some cases, fun. Her new series (Dawn Porter: Free Lover) starts tomorrow night (Tuesday 30 September, 10pm) and, to celebrate, I’ve put together a little gallery, which charts her recent televisual career. Click on the picture below and you’ll be transported into a world of Dawnness.

So bad is BBC Three these days that the fantastic Dawn Porter has jumped ship to Channel 4 for her new series, which kicks off with Dawn Porter: Free Lover (Channel 4, Tuesday, 30 September, 10pm). Now we know Dawn is a game gal… but as she’s got naked in previous shows, we can only assume what risque business she’ll be getting up to in something dubbed ‘Free Lover’…

Take a look on the picture (click on it if you want to see it bigger). Two men (one with quality sheckshy Euro hair) and a woman in what seems to be a hot tub. They’re naked, I’m pretty sure of that, and they’re looking at something. Or someone. Who on earth would be mad enough to get into a hot tub with naked Europeans in the name of TV? There’s only one way to find out…

I feel that, before we even begin, ‘Why I love…’ is the name of a section where we, the TV Scoop writers talk about the people, the shows, we love on the telly. If I was to suddenly declare my love for Dawn Porter, I probably wouldn’t do it on the internet. That said, it’s quite a pertinent point as the web is filled with people doing exactly that. Some corner proclaim their love of Dawn’s work, whereas others declare more carnal pleasures. Why would someone do that in such a public forum? Well, there’s a few reasons why Dawn Porter is in the affections of many…
UPDATE: Go here to read my review of the series opener.

After three entertaining programmes, Dawn Porter’s exploration into the most important issues facing females in the 21st century came to an end last night. After looking a body image, sexuality and childbirth, it was time for Dawn to tackle the art of bagging a bloke. Dawn, being Dawn, didn’t do this lightly and she undertook the usual challenges, put herself on the line and explore scientific techniques to find her perfect partner.
I’ve enjoyed her series on the whole, admired the way in which she has thrown herself into everything with abandon and courage, and enjoyed her cheeky humour. Last night it was all starting to wear a bit thin and I actually started to find her a bit annoying.

Dawn Porter might just be the most real person on telly. If not, she’s one of the most honest. Everyone on the box these days tries so hard to appear like an expert, be it as a judge on a show, or as a sour-faced investigator of something or other. With Dawn, it’s not the case. She’s clearly an intelligent girl, but she isn’t afraid to be a bit dippy or giddy or frightened or… all the things all of us are from time to time. Last night, we saw Ms. Porter run the whole gamut of emotions in Dawn Gets a Baby (BBC Three, Thursday, 9pm).
Of course, Dawn didn’t get up the duff just for this show and document her pregnancy… I’m not sure if that’s been done before but I’m betting it has… and quite a few times at that. No, Dawn wanted to find the truth about childbirth. Why? Well, like loads of women, she is terrified of going through all that pain… stretching… being cut open… the possibility of never recovering you shape (in more ways than one)… so why has no-one looked at this before?

There’s no two ways about. Dawn Porter has polarised opinion. Some people think she’s a silly sod mucking about on the box under the guise of journalism whilst others think she’s tackling serious issues with a refreshing amount of fun and curiosity. I find myself in the latter camp, finding Dawn a very pleasant watch indeed. So, she’s gone lesbian and she’s got herself naked… what next?
The clue is in the title… which is Dawn Gets a Baby (BBC Three, Thursday, 9pm). Basically, Dawn goes off in search of the truth about childbirth. What? She’s gonna get up the duff jus’ for a TV show? No. Don’t be daft. Dawn, like a lot of ladies out there, is petrified at the thought of childbirth. There’s pain, stretching delicate bits of your anatomy and the prospect that sex will never be the same again. Not to mention lugging a baby around for 9 months and being rather tired constantly. So, with that, she off to talk to those who know and, she seeks out a first-time mum who will let her witness a birth in the flesh.

Dawn Porter is a journalist who is isn’t shy of tackling a subject full-on. She’s been in Balls Of Steel, she’s written a book about internet dating and here, on the rejuvenated BBC Three, she is fronting a series of docs that confronts issues central to the 21st century woman – body image, sexuality and fertility.
In the first of these docs, Dawn has a look at her own body issues, and asks why she feels the way she does about her body. Is it because magazines tell her to look a certain way? Or is it something inherent in every woman’s psyche to be self-critical about their bodies? At the end of this really rather good documentary, I was ready to tear off my own clothes, run down the street and shout: “I love my arse!” Except, y’know, it was quite cold last night and there were ne’er do wells outside.

Dawn Porter is either brave or daft. Chances are, like most writers, she a bit of both. We’ve seen her in Super Skinny Me, as well as appearing with Gok Wan on How To Look Good Naked… and now, she’s showing us four documentary films about lesbianism, her naked body, pregnancy and much more. It seems that nothing is off limits for Dawn.
Seeing as the first documentary of hers on showing tonight, it seems like the perfect time to catch up with her and see what’s going down. Remember folks. Dawn Goes Naked BBC Three, Tonight, 9pm. Now, let’s go over the jump together and see what she has to say.

If there’s one thing designed to divert your attention from the second episode of Ashes to Ashes a week on Thursday, it’s the sight of copious quantities of bare flesh. OK, granted, you might only be diverted as far as your VCR or PVR, but as one of your selfless and dedicated TV Scoop hacks it’s my duty to ferret out alternatives like this, and maybe even sample them on your behalf. Think of me like a kind of court taster, helping you avoid poisonous telly of all kinds, and nudging you towards the tastiest morsels.
In a new four-part series for a blob-free BBC Three journalist Dawn Porter is on the case of some of the questions everyone wants answered but is afraid to ask. In the first programme, Dawn Gets Naked, she explores the intricacies and phobias of female body image by hosting a naked flashmob in central London, going to a life-drawing class, visiting a burlesque show and finding out what it’s like to be airbrushed. But if you’re impressed by the way she handles this “taboo” subject, you ain’t seen nothing yet…
