It’s the usual motley crew of assorted Z-list celebrities (Nancy Dell’Olio, Chelsee Healey, Russell Grant??!!) , ex MPs (Edwina Currie), comedians/presenters (Rory Bremner, Dann Lobb, Alex Jones) and ageing sports people (Audley Harrison, Robbie Savage) – all looking to supplement their income. Sorry impress us with their dancing skills.
One Show presenter Alex Jones admits she has no natural rhythm and Robbie Savage is more used to getting sent off a football pitch than staying on a dance floor, but then he seems to be everywhere at the moment since hanging up his playing boots.
Says the 36 year old former Leicester City player – onced regarded as one of the dirtiest player in football: “One thing my mother taught me is to respect your elders and respect people who know what they are doing…If the judges dis me who am I to tell them what they’re doing? I’d never argue off the field, it’s not who I am.”
The quality of the ‘celebs’ may not be the highest this year (and let’s face it, it never is), but Strictly Come Dancing is sure to excite a certain type of reality TV fan when it returns to BBC1 this Saturday, presented of course by Bruce Forsyth and Tess Daly.

David Essex is quitting his role in EastEnders to re-launch a music career.
The 70s heartthrob, who plays Eddie Moon in the BBC One soap, will be bowing out of Albert Square in mid-October in the hope of reviving his once successful pop career and releasing an acoustic album in time for Christmas.
He said: “It’s been wonderful – really, really challenging, intimidating and it does take over your life, but I’ve been blessed because I’ve worked with wonderful actors.
“That was my circle that I worked with, and the level of performance from those actors and the pressure we’re at, it’s just incredible. There’s this kind of galvanised quality of a family under pressure! I really enjoy it.”
Speaking about his new album, he added to ITV1′s ‘This Morning’: “It’s got a lot of my previous hits and some new songs. I’m very pleased how it’s going.”
However, David’s EastEnders alter-ego doesn’t look set to be leaving Walford quietly, as he admitted he has been working on a series of “powerful” exit plots, but producers are leaving the “door ajar” for a potential return in the future.
He explained: “Eddie’s story lines from now until October are phenomenal. They’re so powerful.
“They’re leaving the door ajar for me. It’s tricky. I’d like to go back, but it’s time, really. And I do feel blessed that I seem to be able to work in so many different mediums.”

Matt Smith: Doctor Who should be dark, scary and sexy
Matt Smith believes Doctor Who should be “dark, scary and sexy”. The actor – who plays the eleventh incantation of the titular Timelord – can’t understand criticisms of the programme for being less family-friendly, as he thinks it still has the same values as in the 1970s.
Asked if he thinks the show is too dark, scary or sexy, he said: “No! I think it’s ridiculous to say so. I think it should be all of those things. I think it should be dark, I think it should be scary.
“And sexy? I mean, for God’s sake, look at the companions of Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker [the third and fourth Doctors] in their tiny, Tarzanian tops.”
Matt also hit out at criticism of his co-star Karen Gillan’s skimpy outfits for her character Amy Pond, insisting the sexiness of the Doctor’s companion is part of the programme’s appeal for older male viewers.
He told Live magazine: “What do people want Karen to dress in – a floor-length skirt, a pair of jeans and a hoodie? I mean, she’s a beautiful woman. Amy Pond is a sexy character, by her very nature. No one’s quite like Amy.
“God, I just think all of that is brilliant, because it is fun. I think it’s clever, too. Have you ever watched ‘The Simpsons’ with your son and laughed at different things? Isn’t that one of the virtues of a show like this, when you can see something and look over and go, ‘Know what? In a few years, you’ll get that one.’ “I think that’s what Steven [Moffat, executive producer] does. Don’t tell me that the dads at home don’t go, ‘Ah, cool – Karen’s on.’ “

Is Alex Jones the one for The One Show?
Alex Jones is reportedly set to be axed from The One Show. The Welsh presenter has starred as main female host on the BBC One show since Christine Bleakley left in August last year, but sources say bosses are already holding secret auditions with a view to replacing her.
TV chiefs are said to be unconvinced by the chemistry between Alex and current co-host Matt Baker, and ratings are also down on the same period in 2010.
An insider told the Daily Star newspaper: “The bosses are planning a major shake-up soon. Alex joined the show last year and was paired with Jason Manford but then he got involved in a Twitter sex text scandal and had to leave.
“Then she had to co-host with a string of stand-ins before the producers opted for Matt Baker. This latest pairing doesn’t appear to be working out as well people hoped.”
Show chiefs are considering replacing Alex with former presenter of Channel 4′s Big Breakfast and current Total Wipeout co-host Amanda Byram, 37, who was screen tested for the role last year but lost out to Alex.
The One Show has gone from being one of the BBC’s 12 top-rated programmes, regularly commanding over five million viewers when it was presented by Christine and Adrian Chiles, but has now slipped to only making the top 30 most popular shows on the network.
However, a BBC spokesperson has denied the claims.
They said: “Alex Jones has had a brilliant year, there is no question of The One Show wanting to replace her, and they couldn’t be happier with her as their main presenter.
“We can categorically confirm The One Show have not screen-tested anyone for the main presenter roles, nor do they have any plans to.”

Samantha Womack: drained from EastEnders' baby plot
EastEnders’ baby swap storyline has been cleared by TV watchdog Ofcom as “justified”. After the shock plot – which saw disturbed Ronnie Branning (Samantha Womack) swap her dead son with the body of Kat Moon’s (Jessie Wallace) baby – sparked more than 13,000 complained from distressed viewers, BBC One bosses decided to cut the controversial storyline short.
With the climax brought to an end months earlier than planned, Ofcom ruled the scenes were “not unduly disturbing or graphic”. The report states: “While the storyline was about a sensitive and emotive issue, it is Ofcom’s view that the actual scenes broadcast were not unduly disturbing or graphic.
“Ofcom considered for the regular EastEnders audience, the storyline would not have exceeded their expectations given that the soap is well known for presenting a range of challenging and, at times, controversial issues.”
Meanwhile, regulators ruled the scenes did not suggest Ronnie’s actions were typical of all women suffering from the trauma of cot death, but were spurred on by the various losses she experienced throughout her tragic life.
The report added: “These included her losing the daughter she had been forced to give up for adoption at 14, her desperation to have a baby and the tragedy she had experienced when she had miscarried, and the recent revelation of sexual abuse by her father.
“Whilst the loss of baby James was a catalyst, Ronnie’s reaction was born out of extreme personal trauma in her life and not as the direct and sole consequence of losing her baby.”

Preeya Kalidas who plays Amira Shah in EastEnders
EastEnders’ Amira Shah is set to cause chaos when she makes a dramatic return to Walford. The estranged wife of Syed Masood – played by Preeya Kalidas – fled Albert Square in April 2010 when she discovered Syed (Marc Elliott) and Christian Clarke (John Partridge) had been having a steamy affair behind her back.
However, a shocking Square showdown ensues when “manipulative” Amira returns to face the couple with the baby Syed never knew he was the father to.
An EastEnders insider revealed: “Last year, Amira left Walford a heartbroken woman. When she finds out Syed is planning to marry Christian, she’s totally furious.
“Amira is a manipulative lady, and her presence is set to turn the lives of the Masoods upside down. Has she moved on from her husband – or will she just do whatever she can to get her man back?”
However, the feisty former beautician’s return looks set to make the rest of the Masood family put pressure on Syed to face up to fatherhood and become a responsible dad, while Christian is left “heartbroken”.
The source added to Inside Soap magazine: “The Masoods have never made any secret of how much they disapprove of Syed and Christian’s relationship and the fact he cheated on Amira. But to discover that he has a child will change everything. Now there will be a lot of pressure to face up to his wife and child.
“Syed and Christian have been through so much to be together, and they are still having to overcome hurdles now. But this is something that neither of them expected to happen. Syed’s emotions will be all over the place as he meets his child for the first time.
“There could be real heartbreak for Christian.”

John Barrowman’s on-screen gay romp in Torchwood has been axed. The actor plays racy bisexual Captain Jack Harkness in the BBC One drama and during one raunchy moment in the latest series, he enjoys a tryst with a hunky barman, which was due to go out just 20 minutes after the 9pm watershed.

John Barrowman's gay romp in Torchwood has been axed
While the scene has already been shown on US cable channel Starz – which co-founded the drama – BBC bosses have decided to axe it amid fears of a viewer backlash. A source said: “It wasn’t that it was a gay scene that worried people, but just the fact it was such an explicit sex scene, full stop. You can get away with scenes like that on American cable channels, but you can’t on primetime BBC One.
“Even though the show airs after the watershed, it has a lot of young fans who would have been shocked at the graphic nature of the sex.”
A BBC spokeswoman confirmed the romp had been axed along with a gruesome scene later in the series.
She told The Sun newspaper: “The UK and US versions of Torchwood are slightly different. However, these differences do not change the story in any way and the strong storylines are first and foremost to the series.”

Pat Evans, formerly Butcher, is to hang up her earrings after 25 years in EastEnders.
Pam St Clement, the soap’s second longest serving actor, said: “I have enjoyed 25 and a half wonderful years in EastEnders creating the character of Pat but feel it’s time to hang up her earrings.” But what will she do now, is Clement quitting acting?
She responded to rumours that she was quitting acting with, “Leaving the EastEnders ‘family’ will be akin to a bereavement, but I’m looking forward to other work and life opportunities that I will have the time to pursue.”
Her exit comes a year after the departure of Barbara Windsor, who played Pat’s love rival Peggy Mitchell. The feuding pair came to blows in several catfights in the Queen Vic, often prompted by Pat’s love life. She was married four times – most memorably to Frank Butcher played by the late Mike Reid
Executive Producer Bryan Kirwood said, “Over the years we’ve seen her develop from a shrew into a matriarch, and Pat’s colour, warmth and steel have given EastEnders some of its most memorable stories. Pam will be missed by everyone in Walford.”
Clement is the second longest serving cast member after Adam Woodyatt on the show.

Adele: Set to be judge on The Voice?
Singer Adele is set to land a judging role on The Voice. The Set Fire to the Rain singer is being targeted by BBC1 bosses who think she would make the perfect addition to the panel on the programme – in which singers perform without the panellists seeing what they look like.
Other judges expected to be on the panel include former X-Factor judge Cheryl Cole and US star Cee Lo Green (he also stars on the US version of the show).
A source told the Daily Mirror newspaper: “Adele’s success is all down to her incredible voice and, in this way, embodies all that The Voice represents.
“She’s honest, funny and loved by millions of people of all ages.
“She really has The Voice that can sell albums around the world so she knows what to look for.
“Her style and look is also very different to that of Cheryl Cole, so if we could get them both on board it would be fantastic.”
While Adele has not confirmed she has been approached for the show, she has admitted she has “something quite big” in the pipeline.
She told BBC Radio 1 DJ Chris Moyles yesterday (05.07.11): “There’s a possibility I’m doing something quite big next year – I’ve got a meeting about it on Friday (08.07.11).”

Cee Lo Green is to judge BGT rival, The Voice, when it airs on BBC1 in the UK.
The Forget You star currently sits on the panel of the US version of the singing competition – which sees hopefuls perform for the judges without them seeing their face – alongside Christina Aguilera, Blake Shelton and Adam Levine.
He has admitted he is currently looking to rearrange his schedule to allow him to be a part of the British show.
He is quoted by the Daily Star newspaper as saying: “I have been offered the coaching gig. I plan to take it.
“We just have to work out a schedule that is not completely overbearing.”
Cee Lo’s admission comes shortly after it was announced that all four judges would return for a second season of the US version of the programme, following the success of the first series.
NBC executive Paul Telegdy said: “Our fantastic coaches were integral to the tremendous success of The Voice this year and we are thrilled that they are all returning. We look forward to building season two and making The Voice an even greater experience for fans.”
The Voice, which has also seen former X-Factor stars Cheryl Cole and Dannii Minogue linked with judging roles, is due to begin later this year.

Michael McIntyre: You would have thought someone would have told him to tuck his shirt in
He certainly divides opinion in the comedy world. Some – like stand up Stuart Lee – aren’t impressed by his popular style, while others admire him for what he’s achieved so far.
But whatever your views, you certainly can’t deny that Michael McIntyre is both hard-working and incredibly successful.
His Comedy Roadshows up and down the country attract the very best comedians while his performance as a judge on Britain’s Got Talent was generally regarded as being a breath of fresh air.
Now he’s topping off what has been an incredible 2011 with a one-hour BBC One Christmas Comedy Roadshow special, airing on Christmas Day.
Says McIntyre: “Having visited 12 of my favourite cities, I’m thrilled that my Comedy Roadshow is coming home for Christmas. It’s such an honour for the show to be on Christmas Day and to be introducing some of the biggest names in comedy to entertain a turkey-filled nation slumped on their sofas!”
Mark Linsey, Controller of Entertainment Commissioning at the BBC, added: “Who better to bring some Christmas cheer to BBC One viewers than Michael. He is such a favourite with our audiences and this show is bound to be a real festive treat.”
Comedy Roadshow’ features a routine from Michael, followed by three other comedians before the headline act from different venues around the UK.
The line-up of acts on the festive special has not yet been announced. The second series of the show, made by Open Mike Production, is currently airing on BBC One on Saturday nights.

Pippa Middleton at the wedding of her sister to Prince William
Pippa Middleton has been offered a five-figure sum to appear on Strictly Come Dancing.
BBC One bosses are reportedly willing to go to “any lengths” to have the 27-year-old, who shot to fame after showing off her shapely physique in a figure-hugging bridesmaid’s dress at sister Kate’s wedding to Prince William, appear on the upcoming series celebrity dancing show.
Furthermore, it is hoped having Pippa appear in a number of skimpy costumes could help Strictly to win the ratings battle against ITV1′s The X Factor.
A BBC insider explained: “Pippa has become almost as famous as Kate since the wedding. It would be a huge coup to get her and give the show global appeal.”
While Pippa is said to be a huge fan of Strictly and keen to appear on the show, she is, however, determined not to “embarrass” her royal sister.
A friend added to The Sun newspaper: “She’s a bit overwhelmed by all the attention and is considering her next move very carefully. She is conscious that her sister is going to be queen one day and is determined not to do anything embarrassing.
“But she loves Strictly and if she was sure her appearance would be handled correctly she’d be keen to slip into sequins.”
Strictly Come Dancing professional Erin Boag recently admitted she is keen to perform alongside Prince Harry in the new series of the BBC One show.
She said: “I wouldn’t mind Prince Harry as my dancing partner. I tried phoning him the other day but he must have been busy.”

Erasure's Andy Bell booted off From Popstar to Operastar
Andy Bell became the latest contestant to be voted off Popstar to Operastar last night (26.06.11).
The Erasure singer, who landed in the bottom two alongside Toploader frontman Joe Washbourn. stumbled over his words in the sing-off to Largo Al Factotum from The Barber of Seville, causing judges Vanessa Mae, Katherine Jenkins, Simon Callow and Rolando Villazon to unanimously decide to send him home.
However, the 47-year-old musician admitted he had suffered a “complete blank” due to the pressure of being in the sing-off.
Speaking to host Myleene Klass, he said: “It’s not like doing a gig and I had a complete blank when the song started. I would have liked to have had more time. There was a huge amount of pressure but I’ve loved it and it’s been fantastic.”
Meanwhile, former X Factor singer Joe McElderry impressed the judging panel earlier in the show with his rendition of opera classic Nessun Dorma.
Rolando said: “Well I must say, I know I am listening to you as an opera star, not a pop star, so I need to criticise you as an opera singer. That was fantastic, the Italian was very good. That was extremely enjoyable, that was another chakka chakka performance.”
Simon added: “Fantastic, absolutely thrilling. I saw you this afternoon, I know you were daunted by it but you were fantastic.”
With Joe joining Steps singer Claire Richards, Bucks Fizz star Cheryl Baker and Joe Washnourn in the semi-finals of the ITV1 show next weekend, the four will now have to battle it out for two places in the Popstar to Operastar final the following week.

JK Rowling is to appear on the next series of Who Do You Think You Are?
Last week she announced a new website/social network for Harry Potter fans, Pottermore. This week news emerges that author JK Rowling is to appear on genealogy TV series, Who Do You Think You Are?
The Harry Potter writer has agreed to take part in the series – which sees celebrity participants research their family history – to discover more about her late mother Anne’s French ancestry. Her episode sees her visit Edinburgh and London before travelling to Paris.
Also featuring in the next series of the BBC One show is actor Larry Lamb (EastEnders Archie Mitchell), who traces a long-lost relative and learns the story behind his mother’s adoption, while another veteran EastEnders actress June Brown – best known as Dot Branning on the soap – uncovers “tragedy” and “incredible” acts of bravery in her family history.
Other stars who will examine their backgrounds on the programme include Strictly Come Dancing’ judge Len Goodman, Bee Gees singer Robin Gibb, TV stars Richard Madeley and Alan Carr, actress Emilia Fox, former athlete Lord Sebastian Coe and artist Tracey Emin.
J.K, whose first name is Joanne, has previously spoken of her regret that her beloved mum, who died from multiple sclerosis aged 45, never got to see any of her Harry Potter books.
She said: “I started writing Harry six months before my mum died. That’s obviously a real regret. I never told her I was even writing it.
“She knew I wanted to write. I’m not sure how seriously she took it, but she never knew anything about Harry Potter at all.”

Paul Nicholls: Left Waterloo Road after three days
Paul Nicholls has left BBC1 school drama Waterloo Road after just three days on set.
The former EastEnders actor – whose role as PE teacher Jez Diamond in the drama was announced last month – was reportedly behaving “erratically” during filming. And, after being reprimanded twice for being late, bosses took action and terminated his contract.
A source said: “Paul is a lovely guy but he is in a dark place at the moment. We let him go because it wasn’t working out and hopefully some time off now will give Paul the opportunity to sort himself out.”
Another insider added to the Daily Mirror newspaper: “His behaviour on set was very odd. People felt uncomfortable around him. It was clear Paul was having some personal problems.”
Friends believe one of the reasons for Paul’s odd behaviour was the recent death of his beloved grandfather, as he was finding his loss hard to deal with.
The 32-year-old star, who has admitted to having drink and drug problems in the past, has now been replaced by The Bill star Alex Walkinshaw and Paul’s scenes will be re-shot later this week.
A BBC spokesman said: “Paul Nicholls has left Waterloo Road. The show producers, Shed Productions, said the actor’s decision was for personal reasons, following a recent family bereavement.”

Haven’t been able to get tickets for this year’s Glastonbury? Or just don’t fancy all that mud? It’s not quite the same but you can always watch it on the box, courtesy of BBC – the corporation must have all of its staff there pretty much this year.
Coverage of the festival at Worthy Farm in Somerset includes U2 on the Pyramid Stage. Unbelievably it’s the first Glastonbury performance of the band’s career. Presented by Jo Whiley, Lauren Laverne, Zane Lowe and Mark Radcliffe. Coverage continues on BBC4.
You can see pictures of people wallowing in the mud at this year’s Glasto below.

Chat show kings Alan Carr and Graham Norton have been handed new £4 million deals. The stars, who currently go head to head on Friday nights with their Alan Carr: Chatty Man and The Graham Norton Show programmes on Channel 4 and BBC One respectively, have signed new two-year contracts.
Alan, who has agreed to front a further four series of his programme, is said to have impressed Channel 4 bosses with his ability to attract high-profile names like Jennifer Lopez to his show. An insider explained:
“We took a risk and it’s paid off. People love coming on his show and we get top-flight guests. We’ve tied him down for two more years to stop anyone else getting him.”
Meanwhile, Graham, who has been a main feature of the BBC One line-up since 2005 when he moved to the broadcaster from Channel 5, is in the process of finalising a new deal, which will see him front 34 editions of The Graham Norton Show each year.
A BBC insider told The Sun newspaper: “Graham’s been having a blast and he can’t see himself going anywhere else.”

He’s a great stand up and I love his sitcom, Not Going Out. So my expectations were already ridiculously high for Lee Mack’s new talk show, Lee Mack’s All Star Cast which made its debut on BBC 1, Friday night (June 17, 2011). I wasn’t disappointed.
Despite the fact that it was all fairly shambolic and chaotic – like it had been shot and edited on a shoestring budget for Channel 5 – the strength of Lee Mack’s character and his sharp Northern wit kept it entertaining and fast paced from beginning to end.
During the show guests Frank Skinner and Fern Britton were invited to guess who various audience members were supposed to look like and choose their most embarrassing stories – all very Graham Norton, though somehow much more engaging. Lee Mack was also great in his ability to take the piss out of his guests without them taking umbrage.
But without doubt the best bit of the show was the sketch which saw Mack in his bed sit trying to get Tess Daly to ditch her hubbie ‘Peter Kay’ and sleep with him while being serenaded by James Blunt taking off his monster hit, You’re Beautiful.
It was all reminiscent of Eric Morecambe at his best (indeed there was an Eric Morecambe poster on the door of the bed sit). And Tess Daly’s acting skills were a revelation. She could have found it all rather embarrassing but really went along with it.
Looking forward to the next one, though I hope they manage to sort out the editing!

Glenn Ward: booted out the Apprentice
Glenn Ward became the latest candidate to be fired from The Apprentice last night (15.06.11).
The 28-year-old design engineer, who failed to impress in a task which saw the teams create their own magazines and then sell advertising space, was given the boot by Lord Alan Sugar after the technology mogul admitted he couldn’t envisage himself starting a new business alongside an engineer.
While he didn’t land a lucrative partnership with the multi-millionaire entrepreneur, Glenn was thrilled to have taken part in the BBC One show after finding romance with fellow contestant Zoe Beresford.
Glenn exclusively said: “Zoe and I get on really well. It’s going really well between the two of us.”
However, the Hertfordshire-based businessman hit back at claims made by former contestant Edna Agbarha, who criticised the pair for letting their relationship cloud their judgement in tasks.
He said: “I completely disagree with that. Every single task we kept totally professional and none of our personal feelings were ever involved in the decisions we made.”
Glenn is now backing Zoe to win the whole competition.
He added: “I think Zoe has done fantastically in what she’s done so far on the show. She’s a very strong character with very strong opinions and I think she could go on to win it.”
