Doctor Who stars Matt Smith and Karen Gillan win at NTAs

Thursday, January 26th, 2012

Doctor Who stars Matt Smith and Karen Gillan were both big winners at the National Television Awards last night (25.01.12).

The pair took home the prizes for Male Drama Performance and Female Drama Performance for their roles as the Doctor and Amy Pond in the BBC One sci-fi series.

Matt beat Shameless star David Threlfall, John Barrowman – who was nominated for his performance in Doctor Who spin-off ‘Torchwood’ – and Doc Martin actor Martin Clunes to the honour and paid tribute to everyone who works on the programme as he collected his statuette.

He said: “Thank you very much. What a massive honour. I’d like to thank everyone in Cardiff who make the show … Most of all I want to thank everyone who watched, who voted and who makes the show what it is.”

Karen was equally thrilled with her win at the ceremony – which was held at London’s The 02 arena – and was quick to pay tribute to her co-stars and showrunner Steven Moffat as she shared her success with them.

She said: “Oh my good God! Thank you so much. This means so much to me. I’d like to thank my co-stars Matt Smith and Arthur Darvill for making ‘Doctor Who’ so fun. I’d like to thank Steven Moffat for his writing and generally being ‘The Moff’. And my mum and dad.”

Other winners at the NTAs – which are voted for by the public – included Ant and Dec, who received the Entertainment Presenter accolade, beating host Dermot O’Leary in the process, David Walliams, who was presented with the Landmark Award for his gruelling Sports Relief charity swim, and ‘Downton Abbey which scooped the Drama gong.

Ant and Dec opened the ceremony by performing Nat King Cole’s ‘Let There Be Love’ with Sir Bruce Forsyth.

‘Coronation Street’ beat rivals ‘EastEnders’ and ‘Emmerdale’ to win the highly coveted Serial Drama gong.

Afterwards, the ITV1 soap’s producer Phil Collinson praised departing cast member Katherine Kelly – who hadn’t been on hand to collect her Serial Drama Performance prize earlier in the evening – insisting the accolade was a testament to her work as Becky McDonald.

Phil told TV Scoop: “It’s amazing to get an award. I feel so proud for all the cast who have worked so hard in Manchester. It’s a great way to start the next 50 years of the show. It’s the best leaving present Katherine could have asked for and this award and the ratings we’ve got are a real testament to her performance.”

Michelle Keegan was crowned soap’s Sexiest Female for the third year running at tonight’s (26.09.11) Inside Soap Awards.

The Coronation Street actress – who plays Tina McIntyre in the ITV1 soap – scooped the prize during the ceremony at exclusive London venue Gilgamesh and admitted she was stunned by the news.

Michelle – who is engaged to The Wanted star Max George – said: “I genuinely didn’t think I would win again. I think the people who vote clearly don’t see me in my slobs on a daily basis. I think it’s Tina they like anyway, not me. Max better have voted for me otherwise I’ll kill him!”

Coronation Street won the Outstanding Achievement award for the show’s 50th anniversary week, which saw the tram crash and live episode and actor Chris Fountain said it was very well deserved.

Chris – who plays Tommy Duckworth – said: “I think it’s about time to be honest. That storyline was phenomenal and it hasn’t been recognised at any other awards ceremonies. I’m just proud to be part of it.”

However, the big winner of the night was ‘EastEnders’ as the BBC One show took home five awards, including Best Soap.

Jessie Wallace – who plays Kat Moon – was named Best actress while Maisie smith (Tiffany Butcher) scooped the prize for Best Young Actor.

Other winners included ‘Emmerdale’ star Danny Miller, who was named Best Actor and Sexiest male Danny Mac.

Inside Soap magazine’s editor Steven Murphy said: “Huge congratulations to all of this year’s winners, who thoroughly deserve their Awards. It’s been a fantastic year for British soaps, and I look forward to another exciting and dramatic 12 months ahead.”

BAFTA TV awards 2011: The winners and red carpet dresses

Monday, May 23rd, 2011

It was a night of shock, surprise and glam frocks with TV’s elite turning up for the Television BAFTA awards.

The Only way is Essex caused a huge scene picking up the YouTube audience award, however, there was nothing award winning about the cast’s outfits. Amy Childs opted for an over the top gold and lace gypsy wedding style frock, which made her look more mismatched fairy rather than fashionable lady, while her co-stars Lydia Rose Bright and Lauren Goodgear added some Essex bling with their crystal encrusted frocks.

Over on the awards side Martin Freeman and Steve Coogan got rewards for their performances in Sherlock and The Trip, while The Cube also beat the X Factor to scoop the
award for Entertainment programme. The leading actor award went to Daniel Rigby, for Eric And Ernie, while Vicky McClure scooped the leading actress award for This Is England ’86.

Soaps got a look in too with  the single drama award going to The Road to Coronation Street
while Eastenders got Continuing drama.

In the Drama series Sherlock scooped the award while Any Human Heart got the Drama serial. And there was a lovely moment when Sir Trevor McDonald received the Bafta fellowship, the well loved newsreader having a deserved moment in the limelight.

Over in the fashion stakes, leading the black dress crowd was Jessie Wallace who looked elegant in a 50s style frock, while Daisy Lowe also stood out with her crochet  long frock.  Cat Deeley also made an impression with a backless lace detail dress, while Alex Kingston played it simple with a strapless frock, which she accessorised with a turquoise necklace.

Elsewhere Sheridan Smith went for on-trend pink with a pale coloured fishtail frock, while  Gillian Anderson went for a darker hue of this trend for her appearance.

Stars opt for the black dress at the National Television Awards

Thursday, January 27th, 2011

Last night’s National Television Award’s red carpet was covered with a sea of black dresses, as stars from the soap and TV world opted for this colour.

Holly Willoughby went for the colour du jour in the shape of a long strapless sparkly number, which showed off her baby bump, while award winner Lacie Turner went for a netted 50s style frock.

Amy Childs bought a touch of Essex to the red carpet with a PVC number, while Emma Bunton went all sophisticated in short lace sleeved frock.

Also in black was Stacey Solomon and ‘Oak’s Jorgie Porter who both went for long frocks for the event. See the red carpet fashion in the gallery below.
