TV Review - Big Brother Launch Show, Channel 4, Thursday, 5 June, 9pm

We had to cover it. The Big Brother Launch Show (Channel 4, Thursday, 5 June, 9pm) is, whether you like it or not, one of the biggest TV events of the year. Last night's was particularly poignant as I reckon it's going to be the last. That's a relief eh? Weirdly, the Holy Moly mailout shared a video of the TVScoop office today, showing my response to the programme. Suffice to say, I wasn't best pleased that I was missing Heroes on BBC Two.

Anyway, once I'd calmed down, I scribbled down some thoughts (in my own blood on the walls).

Ho ho! It takes allsorts to make a Big Brother house! Har!

I'm pretty certain that the readers of TVScoop don't watch Big Brother (starting tonight on Channel 4, 9pm). If they do, they don't tend to leave comments. Maybe Big Brother is one of those Great British shameful past-times like finding your inner warrior or cross dressing in a garden shed. To be honest, I don't buy it. If something has some kind of impact on you, then roll will the slaggings and say you like it all the same. Just don't ever start a sentence with 'I know it's rubbish but..." because then, you're fair game. In saying that, Big Brother does something weird to me. I completely loathe it but I end up watching it anyway. In fairness, my job as a TV critic has something to do with that, but there's something so appalling about the show, that I'd probably tune in anyway. That said, the derailed train spectacle is wearing thin at the moment and BB9 and I may just be bidding each other adieu.

Oh dear. It's that time again. I've said it before, and now I'm about to say it again, because, year-after-year it's true. The nation is about to be split in two. Those that hate Big Brother and those that don't watch it. There. I've got it out of the way (apologies to any readers who have heard me saying that for the past 3 years). Anyway, the Big Brother Launch Show (Channel 4, Thursday, 5 June, 9pm) is upon us and the question is... will this be the last?

Like it or not - and taking a brief glance at the results of our poll from earlier in the week, I'd suspect most of you are on the side of "not" - Big Brother starts in just six days time. That's Big Brother *9* by the way, which is just ridiculous. You'll have seen that the adverts are becoming a littler longer now, with glimpses of the house. It's been fully redesigned this year, so take a look over the cut for a brief tour...

Chanelle wants more tears and anguish in the Big Brother house (or 'Live Snuff 24/7 from the big microwave)

If Chanelle Hayes, Big Brother reject, rubbish singer and 'sex-tape-with-Teddy', is Big Brother's demographic, then wheel out the gallows and get the bloke in the hood to kick the stool from under my feet. As some of you will know, I'm not exactly a fan of this 'theatre of cruelty' that currently blights just about every reality show on the box (past and present I suppose). When someone says 'it'll make great TV', they usually mean that someone will have to have some kind of breakdown on camera in the name of entertainment. Kurt Vonnegut, who every lame-ass TV critic loves for a quote, said "One of the few good things about modern times: If you die horribly on television, you will not have died in vain. You will have entertained us." How bloody true.

You see, Chanelle wants a change on Big Brother (soon to be deceased... surely?) has claimed that Big Brother 9 contestants should be asked to nominate in front of each other because it would result in "heated rows" between housemates. Since when have rows been interesting? Okay, in fairness, if there's a drunken cat-fight outside my window on a Friday, I'll watch... but only because it's spontanious and grimly fascinating. If you orchestrate a scrap, then you're no better than the little weasel at school who was referred to as 'shit stirrer'. Shit, if you haven't gathered, is not the best thing you can stir. How about stirring our imagination?

TVScoop Poll: Big Brother starts in two weeks' time - will you be watching?

The old fashioned signs that summer is just beginning were the first cuckoo, lighter evenings and men rushing to take their tops off. But the things that really say "summer" to me are the Chelsea Flower Show (last week), the French Open (the next two weeks) and the start of Big Brother (which kicks off in a fortnight) - is that sad...? But when those flashes of the new BB eye crop up on Channel 4, how do they make you feel? Excited? Annoyed? Bored? Personally, I *know* that even though I'm not expecting much, I'll still watch every single day - but what about all of you lovely people: will you be watching Big Brother 2008?

New Big Brother eye logo revealed

With a new Big Brother, so comes a new eyeball. Over the years, there have been loads of variations, with the last one being a splintered multicoloured affair. Was it making some subliminal commentary about the fractured relationships between diverse ethnic groups, weaving itself in with the race row? Probably not. So what it this one saying?
