The best TV moments of 2006 #1 - Planet Earth

Comments (1)

Attenborough_2So our countdown to the greatest show of 2006 is over, and unsurprisingly, Planet Earth has come out on top.

Planet Earth has, without question, provided us with some of the most enduring images ever screened. It's difficult to write about the show without running out of superlatives as the shots given to us were so incredibly beautiful, the action so intense and subject so important.

The best TV moments of 2006 #2: Doctor Who

DoomsdayWe're only one post away from declaring our best TV moment of 2006, but in the runner-up spot what else could it be but Doctor Who? Back on our screens in 2005 after an absence of 14 years, many people must have thought that Russell T Davies could not equal the climax of that first "modern" series. Many more people may have wondered whether David Tennant could equal the performances of Chris Eccleston as the eponymous Doctor. On both counts, they needn't have worried.

Earl_5This year has thrown up some fantastic telly. Some of it has been unintentionally great (like Phil Schofield laying a smackdown on Paul Burrell) and some of it has just been plain genius. With British comedy having an off day with the likes of Russell Brand, The IT Crowd and Blunder, it was nice to see the US sending us  one of the greatest comedy shows ever made. That show is the stupendous My Name is Earl.

Bleak_house2
If Dickens were alive today, he'd be head writer on Corrie or Eastenders. So great is his knack for creating drama and suspense, both on the seedy streets of Victorian London and in the grand country houses of the upper classes, that it seems obvious he'd be happily occupied in creating "I'm yoor Muvva!!" type storylines for the soaps. And because he's the king of the chapter cliffhanger, his stories lend themselves perfectly to serial adaptation, which is partly what made the BBC's Bleak House such a gripping, suspenseful watch.

The best TV moments of 2006 #5: Shameless

Shameless_3I must admit to having a special affinity with Shameless. For 11 years I worked across the road from the estate where the first three series were filmed. But after thirty-odd years of deprivation, the "Chatsworth" estate is finally getting its long overdue redevelopment, so as we reported in October, Shameless production staff have been hunting for an alternative home for the Gallagher family and their mates.

The best TV moments of 2006 #6: Life On Mars

Life_on_mars2006 has been a good year for new drama, whether it be one-offs, potential pilots masquerading as a short series of one-offs, costume dramas or complete new series. One of the best such was Life On Mars. The premise was so weird and original, the execution so accurate and original, that the show was catapulted to the top of everyone's must-see list and became one of the most widely discussed programmes of the year.

The best TV moments of 2006: Round-Up (50-11)

Nikki_big_brother2006 has been a berserk year for TV. The talking box in the corner of our living rooms (or on the wall if you're swish) has provided some sublime dramas, insane reality TV, hilarious comedy... and some people who, quite frankly, don't deserve to be famous at all. So all the TVScoop writers got together and painstakingly picked out all of our favourite moments... and we're not done yet! We've just delved into the top ten and of course, there are shows that have been omitted which could have made it, and maybe there are programmes that you feel should be in.

Why don't you leave us a comment or two to tell us what your best TV moments of 2006 are. Here is a round up of 50-11.

The best TV moments of 2006 #7 - Green Wing

Green_wingEvery time I see one of those adverts for Barclaycard I let out a big audible sigh as it features two of the finest characters from one of the best comedies our TVs have ever had the privilege of airing. The characters are essentially Mac' and Guy from the fabulous Green Wing, and I miss it being on my screen far too much.

A comedy set in a hospital is hardly a new thing. There is Scrubs and looking back, Only When I Laugh ("I'm H.A.P.P.Y, I'm H.A.P.P.Y, I know I am, I'm sure I am, I'm H.A.P.P.Y...) but Green Wing offered something new and fresh to the genre... mostly in the form of surreal visual gags mixed with nervous breakdowns.

Derrenbrown_4For 50 weeks of the year, Derren Brown should be locked up and kept away from civilised society in a plastic prison, like X-Men's Magneto. Then for the other two weeks, he should be let out, under constant supervision, to make television shows as brilliant as this - The Heist, from way back in January.

To jog your memories, this was the show where The Diabolical One convinced a select group of people to commit an armed robbery (fake guns, but they used them as if they were real). When I heard this premise, I thought he was going to be with them, urging them on, but it turned out to be much more impressive...

_41213070_gallo_cat203 I should probably preface this post by explaining that in describing this as one of the "best" TV moments of 2006, I don't necessarily mean that I enjoyed it. Well, not as much as George Galloway's political opponents probably enjoyed it, anyway. No, this was car crash TV at its very worst - I mean best. It was the kind of TV you have to watch from behind the sofa, cringing in horror at what you see before you.

In this case, what we seen before us was pretty damn cringe-making. Given a "find out if humans can communicate with animals" task by Big Brother, George Galloway threw himself into his role with abandon. "Now would you like me to be the cat?" he asked Rula Lenska creepily, before dropping to all fours and pretending to lick cream from her hands. There was an immediate uproar from Galloway's constituents, who kind of wished they hadn't voted for him when he started getting all creepy and cat-like. It was hard not to agree with them. As TV moments go, though, it was certainly memorable - you have to give it that.

The best TV moments of 2006 #10: The Street

Kerry_yvonne_seanThe excitement mounts as we enter the Top Ten of our Best TV Moments of 2006 series and at Number 10 we find ourselves, not on Downing Street but on a completely different street: The Street.

This short run set the bar for serial dramas set in one location but where each episode concentrates on a single character. This is a formula that has worked elsewhere (Sorted, to name but one) but never better than with Jimmy McGovern's excellent concept and unparalleled writing.

The best TV moments of 2006 #11: The World Cup

World_cup_3Whether or not you're a football fan, there's something about the World Cup to enjoy. For the most part, the football is of a much higher standard that the run-of-the-mill weekly matches. The underdogs are further under and more doggy, the national pride gets an airing (even if it doesn't last for very long) and somehow the world becomes smaller as, wherever you go, everyone is talking about the same events, the same sportsmen, and watching the same replays.

For die-hard footie fans it is of course the pinnacle of viewing pleasure and for those equally die-hard football haters there's the knowledge that it only happens once every four years so they can grit their teeth and wait for it to be over. It may not have been a vintage world cup this year, but it certainly got us all talking - and watching!

The best TV moments of 2006 #12 - Young@Heart

Youngheart_2Did anyone see Young@heart? For those that didn't, you have missed what is probably the most life affirming docu-film ever made. Quite a bold claim I know, but it really was incredible viewing. For one, it nearly made me cry (which was slyly averted by me being an idiot and talking over emotional bits).

Young@Heart followed a group of groovy geriatrics who sang in a choir. Not any old choir though... a choir that reproduced the songs of The Clash, Sonic Youth and Bob Dylan. I understand that this sounds toe-curling poor, but believe me, it has provided this writer with scenes he'll never ever forget.

The best TV moments of 2006 #13 - The return of Cracker

Cracker_3

In all honesty, how often do you find yourself saying "put ITV on now! Now! Now! NOW!" and meaning it? If you're anything like me, it's seldom bordering on never. Well, this year ITV got it right at least once, with the return of Cracker.

Naturally I assumed that it wouldn't be able to match up to my expectations. I mean, when it was originally on our screens, Cracker had an almost cultish following. I braced myself thinking that the new one could do nothing other than let me down. That's when I got a very very nice surprise. Cracker blew me away, and here's why... read on.

EmmaEvery year, Strictly Come Dancing just gets better and better. The standard gets higher, the dresses get shorter, and the judges get bitchier.

For weeks on end, we've followed Emma, Jimmy, Peter, Louisa et al as they've waggled their hips and glided serenely for our viewing pleasure. When they've been good they've been great, and when they've been bad they've been awful, and we wouldn't have it any other way. Throw in a few controversial decisions on the part of the general public, and the odd temper tantrum, and you've got a show that puts X-Factor resolutely in the shade...

The_royle_family_bigIt's always quite hard to write about something that's essentially perfect, but that's pretty much what this Royle Family special was. As Linda said at the time: "To say this was a piece of TV gold would be like saying Pete Burns looks a tiny bit different or Simon Cowell is ever so slightly a bighead.".

Yes, quietly broadcast on a random Sunday evening with relatively little fanfare, the Beeb managed to bury one of the best 60-minutes of television I've seen in a very long time...

Pete_12 Pete Bennett: what a wacky chap he was, with his strange taste in trousers and his even stranger taste in women. For weeks, Pete did nothing much. It didn't matter: the women still fell at his feet, turning into crazed bunny boilers after just one whiff of his unwashed body.

As the competition drew to a close, though, Pete had an epiphany. The epiphany was this: Pete was The Chosen One - God's own winner. He knew this because his dead friend had "come down from Heaven" and told him so. Er, right then, Pete. Not wanting to argue with the Almighty (or perhaps just too desperate to escape Nikki to care) the rest of the house mates all agreed that Pete was, indeed, the rightful winner. And so it came to be that Pete was crowned king winner, and everyone rejoiced. Predictably, his relationship with Nikki didn't last. A few weeks ago, though, as the neighbourhood kids drifted past my window on their way to school, I heard their childish laughter. "Ezamanna!" they shouted. "Wanker!" To influence the minds of babes, it is a fine accomplishment indeed...

The best TV moments of 2006 #17: Spooks

Spooks_series5Spooks is the kind of show where when you hear that it's coming back you let out an ear-splitting cheer, and make sure you're going to be in on the first night or double-check that the vid is set.

And you're not entirely sure why you're cheering because, let's face it, no-one really knows what's going on from one episode to the next, but somehow it doesn't matter because you get caught up in the cleverness of it all, the imponderability and the glamour of "Five." You might even get a little bit bemused about why "Five" is on BBC One instead of...well...Five.
