X Factor hopeful Samantha Brookes first auditioned for the show three years ago – but walked out because she didn’t think she could win.
The 31-year-old singer – who wowed the judges, Gary Barlow, Kelly Rowland, Tulisa Contostavlos and Louis Walsh, on Saturday night’s episode (10.09.11) with her performance of Whitney Houston’s One Moment in Time – initially tried out in front of the old panel, including Simon Cowell, but couldn’t cope with the pressure.
She said: “I’ve auditioned before – about three years ago, before the live audiences were brought in. The time was wrong. I’d sung in front of Simon and he said to me, ‘Do You think you’ve got what it takes to win ‘The X Factor?’ And I was like, ‘No.’ And he said, ‘That’s not what I want to hear.’ And I just walked out. I was just so under confident because in this industry you have to have a certain kind of look and I’m not a size 10, I’m a size 18 – I’m a bigger girl and not your typical pop star.”
However, the Welsh singer felt much more confident this time because she realised she had nothing to lose.
During an interview on This Morning she said: “I definitely felt more confident this time. I’m getting on – I’m 31 now – so it’s kind of now or never. I just thought if I don’t go for it now, I never will. I thought, I’ve got nothing to lose and everything to win and if nothing comes of it, then fine.”
