Jai McDowall is shock winner of Britain’s Got Talent. Ronan Parke runner up

Jai McDowall in his auditions

Despite all the controversy about BGT being fixed, in the end it was the result that no one could have predicted – not even Simon. Jai McDowall has been voted winner of Britain’s Got Talent 2011.

Talented, but not obviously star quality, the earnest Scotsman came from virtually nowhere to beat nine other finalists and scoop £100,000, ahead of the odds-on favourite Ronan Parke.

Even the judges looked visibly shocked, Amanda expressing her disappointment that her favourite (Ronan) was beaten into second place, ahead of Jacksons sound-alike band, New Bounce.

Presumably in an attempt at transparency to deflect allegations that the show is ‘rigged’, all of the acts’ places were read out in reverse order from 10 to 4 before the top three were announced: New Bounce (3rd), Ronan Parke (2nd) and Jai McDowell (1st).

And while history has shown that in the long term coming second in these competitions is often preferable to winning (Olly Murs who was runner up in The X Factor being the obvious example), it is possible that many people didn’t vote for Ronan Parke because of anger at the allegations – unfounded of course – that he had already been chosen as the winner by Simon Cowell.

Maybe we’ll never know, but two things seem certain. One is that all the controversy won’t have been bad for ratings. Secondly little Ronan Parke with his angelic voice and foppish Justin Bieber style haircut will be remembered long after Jai McDowall has been forgotten.

I LOVED Jai!!! Having all the papers call someone a favourite doesn’t reflect the nation!! He had a wonderful voice and he was HOT!!

I am delighted for Jai – worthy winner, I did not however believe he would win a national vote. I thought the British preference would go towards Roland. Jai has spoiled my request of asking him to sing at least one song at my Big Tea Party next Saturday to raise funds for Marie Curie Nurses. I am delighted for Jai and hope his career advances in a deserved way. I totally embrace someone who is unassuming with genuine talent.

To be honest, i wanted Ronan to win but im really happy for jai because he has this amazing voice which moves you everytime!…still think Ronans a sweetie though!

Well he obviously has more star quality than Ronan quality or he wouldn’t have won, give him a chance he deserved it being a care work for disabled people rather than a typical Justin Bieber 12 year old…

    Dear Shinychris,

The panel on Britain’s Got Talent were a disgrace tonight. They may not have liked the result, but their grudging admission that Jai was a “worthy” winner was almost the only mention he received from them after the result was announced, compared to their ongoing and irritatingly repeated indignation because their favourite had been beaten. There was a striking moment when Ant or Dec asked “the Hoff” what he thought Ronan’s future career held in store. As Jai’s win had barely been mentioned at this point, he thankfully answered what he thought the question should have been ( ie answering with respect to Jai not Ronan ). I felt embarassed for Jai that his win seemed to be regarded by the judges as an error of judgement. The focus on Ronan was also embarassing.

Their reaction suggests contempt for the voters , whose phone calls ultimately pay the judges wages ! Ronan’s voice may be angelic and clinically good, but he has little life experience and knows little of any passions about which he might be singing. Jai sings with passion and his voice gives us goosebumps ! His performances were more powerful and his voice carries with it a degree of emotion which is both striking and memorable.

Your comment that “little Ronan Parke with his angelic voice and foppish Justin Bieber style haircut will be remembered long after Jai McDowell has been forgotten” seems to suggest that you’re predicting a rapid demise for Jai too. “”Might be remembered” could have been forgiven !

think its ridiculous that people say that ronan was robbed… it was a public vote and the public chose Jai. if the public thought ronan was a deserving winner then he would have won. And its extremely unfair to say he has no star quality. Ronan will have a fantastic career as well dont think its fair to bring a deserving winner down. when the public decided he was the winner.

What a load of rubbish. Jai McDowell was my winner from his first audition. the fact he showed nerves does not mean he hasn’t star quality. It was quite clear that little Ronan HAD been groomed to win from his first audition. I will be keen to see how Jai McDowell progresses long after I have forgotten Ronan who?
