TV Review: The Sex Education Show: Am I Normal? Channel 4, Monday, 5 July, 9pm

anna richardson normal.jpgAnna Richardson terrifies me. She’s made decisions on her face which has left her looking like something from the planet Quirky. Her face is perfectly symmetrical and her teeth oddly uniform. On top of all that, she’s prone to annoying the shit outta me.

And so, once again, I tuned into her latest sexploration of the obvious with teeth pre-ground, with The Sex Education Show: Am I Normal? (Channel 4, Monday, 5 July, 9pm).

Fact is, in the past, Richardson has veered from patronising viewers and going a bit Daily Mail. Porn was rotting our morals, the internet was full of pervs and people had hang-ups about sex!

By looking at our nation’s teens and their views on knocking uglies together, I was braced for an onslaught of dreary, mind-killing dross. And, yep, Anna Richardson irritated me all over again… however… not for the normal reasons.

See, normally, I want to kick my TV to pieces because of her Diet Dawn Porter schtick and the way she shows faux-concern for her fellow human, despite the fact she’s one of the people who enabled Gillian McKeith’s systematic bullying to appear on our screens. The fact is, The Sex Education Show is so very nearly good that it actually bugs me. Seriously. There’s a real and good service that’s lost in tabloid grinning and gurning.

And so, last night, Anna Richardson annoyed me by actually making a reasonable programme. I could feel myself cocked like the hammer on a pistol, waiting to leap on everything she said… and she completely let me down by providing us with a show that, for the most part at least, was informative and useful.

Git.

This particular show seemed more relevant because, for once, she was actually aiming her findings and such to a group of people who are, for the most part, clueless idiots. Yep, our teenagers were treated to a procession of cocks and STIs, reeling and giggling on the floor. A puerile response is to be expected along with the earnest comments of “gays people can look like anyone” and “cocks are ‘orrible.”

Away from watching Anna Richardson fill young minds full of glans, we got that most beautifully British of things, and that was the chance to giggle along with old people being rude. One elderly couple talked candidly about their sex life and showed a vocabulary of filth that would impress Ron Jeremy. The cackled about doing it “wheel-barrow” style and snorted with laughter when talking about how the husband has a “rather big cock” and how incompatible it was with her small colon.

Of course, there’ll be idiots out there who think that old people having sex is disgusting (the kind of people who scream when given the LemonParty link – please note, if you’re going to search for that, it is wholly NSFW), but they should go and suffer an entirely sexless existence. Britain would be a richer place if pensioners replaced complaining and casual racism for shagging.

Anyway, begrudgingly, I’ll have to doff my cap to Anna Richardson on this show. It wasn’t half bad at all and, next week, she’ll be looking at sex with disabled people and one person interviewed looks like he’s an expert anecdote teller and should have you laughing your genitals off.
