Last night I watched Starsuckers (More4) and was pleasantly blown-away. I was all set to give it a glowing review on these pages before I stopped and thought: “Hang on! Instead of reviewing it, I should do something else… something nicer!”
In short, this ‘nice’ act is to avoid giving you reams of words to digest, but rather, give you a short synopsis and direct you to the fact that you can catch it on Channel 4′s 4oD.
Basically, the show is about fame and pop-culture. However, instead of being some jumped up chin-stroke, it’s a rather amusing and witty… and sometimes cruel look at the media’s obsession with fame.
And don’t think that we get off the hook either. There’s plenty of criticism for us sofa dwelling boobs as well.
Sure, these slanted looks at celebrity have been done a million times before, but few have been done this well. For TV-nuts, think of Starsuckers as a Junior Adam Curtis. It ties many theories together without frying your brain and does it all with a lot of excellent anecdotal evidence, as well as a few stunts that would make a satirist proud.
You’ll also be aching to know who Max Clifford is talking about when he goes into anecdote mode.
Click here to watch Starsuckers on 4oD. It’s feature length, so free up an evening for it. It’s well worth it.
