Heavy Metal is, without question, the most maligned genre in history. For every vocal fan there’s a thousand sneering naysayers. So, for once, the lovers of the genre can have the chance to revel in Heavy Metal Britannia (BBC Four, Friday, 5 March, 9pm).
The latest rockumentary (from the channel that brings us consistently brilliant looks at various genres) goes headlong into behemoth riffs and necks sore from headbanging.
All the big guns are included, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Judas Priest – however, the roots of metal are included too, with Arthur Brown, ‘You Really Got Me’, William Burroughs, Boris Karloff and the 12 bar blues all making up the DNA of early hard rock.
Axe men defend metal’s place in rock and, even for the sneering naysayer, there should be enough pop-culture goodness to get all the teeth into.
