What ever happened to the heroes? That’s what The Stranglers asked. Well, the BBC would prefer to find out what ever happened to all the brass bands? Since the mines closed, the colliery band has been a dying thing… until now, thanks to A Band for Britain (BBC Two, Monday, 8 March, 9pm)
This new series follows comic/presenter/music nut Sue Perkins as she attempts to breathe new life into Dinnington Colliery Brass Band.
Now, you may not have heard of them, but they were once proud symbol of a form of music now on the verge of extinction.
Sue leads the Dinningon fanatics on a crusade (a pointless TV crusade, but a heartwarming and fun one nonetheless), hunting down new players, getting them shipshape and dragging a new-look band back to the concert stage.
As Sue won Maestro, and is generally a very likeable human, this should be a great little show and could sneakily be one of the best of 2010. It could do for brass what Oz and James did for wine.
