sircharliebrooker.jpgAuntie BBC completely owned the Royal Television Society 2009 awards last night, taking home nine prizes including best drama series for The Street. Quite right too. However, the biggest shock of the night was Charlie Brooker beating Simon Cowell. Yes, really! And again, quite right too!

BBC Four’s Newswipe with Charlie Brooker won the Entertainment award ahead of ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent and The X Factor. No-one saw that one coming did they? Brooker included I’d wager.

‘Best Actor’ and ‘Best Actress’ awards went to David Oyelowo and Naomie Harris for their roles in the BBC One mini-series Small Island while Wounded, BBC One’s programme about soldiers coming home from Afghanistan, scooped ‘Best Documentary’.

Celebrating the awards, BBC One controller Jay Hunt said: “I am delighted BBC One got this sort of recognition for brave programming. It’s a real tribute to the teams who made such distinctive shows.”

BBC Two took home the ‘Scripted Comedy’ award for The Thick Of It, while Miranda Hart scooped the ‘Comedy Performance’ gong for Miranda. BBC Four’s Mad Men beat Generation Kill and Damages to the ‘International’ prize.

Apart from Miranda, it’s hard to argue with those winners. Good work RTS Awards!
