Simon-King-71.jpgSpringwatch (and Autumnwatch) have become something of a cult favourite on TV. I think it's because it saves us from actually having to bother with the outside. Our TV acts as a window and Kate Humble can get cold and flea-bitten whilst we nibble ginger biscuits. Anyway, for those of you who are into it, you'll be glad to know that there's a show on this week called Simon King's Shetland Diaries (BBC Two, Thursday, 4 February, 8pm)

So what does all this mean then? Log fire with King sat smoking a pipe leafing through his diary and reading bits of it aloud?

Of course not.

Simon King, wildlife cameraman extraordinaire (and all round nice chap) sets off on an adventure (admittedly, an adventure where he has to stay very still and quiet for long periods of time) to the Shetland Isles to live there with his family through the changing seasons.

Seems a bit tight.

They end up in a remote cottage in the wilds and the winter brings 100mph winds, which is pleasant obviously.

Still, at least they all get to dress up like Vikings with the locals for the Viking Up-Helly-Aa Festival. Real ale and people in drag abound. It's part Island Parish part Nature Doc.
