gypsywedding.jpgAaah. The travelling community. They’re a real bone of contention aren’t they? People don’t like it when they leave a big mess and… well… don’t really have any other opinions do they? Well, we’re about to peek at the world of the nuptials of the travellers in the sensitively titled My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding (Channel 4, Thursday, 18 February, 9pm).

Joan – a traveller – has been saving up for her wedding since she was 13. Now she’s a ripe ol’ 22 (her thinking, not mine… in traveller terms she says she’s “a bit old” to be a bride).

So all that money needs to be splashed and her wedding dress will be the first thing that pokes out your eye. It’s a great big meringue thing in satin and crystals. It’s so big that she had to awkwardly tread down the aisle of the church she’s getting wed in like a fat man moving down a plane.

We’ll also meet 16-year-old Bridget who has similar wardrobe problems when trying to get out of her glitzy wedding carriage.

This might sound like one big piss-take, but Osca Humphreys has managed to make a rather sweet film that swipes the the yards of dress and hair to one side to examine the world of the British gypsy community and its traditions.

It should be eye-opening in more ways than one.
