Next week, you can tune in for Tower Block of Commons (Channel 4, Monday, 1 February, 9pm). Now, that’s not a pun on commoners who live in high rises, but rather, one of those ‘social experiments’ where we get to see MPs forced to live on an assumed breadline in the hope they’ll become more compassionate… and possibly cry on camera.
Naturally, it’ll be hard to believe that these slippery shits will play completely fairly. They are MPs after all. They’ll probably get their chums to secretly load them up with Starbucks or whatever.
This means that we’ll have to thrill at normal people being rude to them… and in this documentary, it happens quite a lot.
Lib Dem MP Mark Oaten goes from being quietly thrilled at the idea of roughing it with residents of council tower blocks… to having a cry on his bed after a group of wags yell “Ain’t you the one that got done for the rent boys?!”
We’ll also see shadow Children’s Secretary Tim Loughton baffled in a newsagents when they don’t have any copies of The Telegraph and pleading for money while elsewhere, the Tory’s Iain Duncan Smith flaps when a woman says: “How old was you when you lost your virginity?”
Basically, all politicians are so far removed from the real world that we have to rely on the idiots who work in TV to thrust them back into the bosom of Britain. Of course, people in TV have no idea what the real world is like either, so we’ll just have to hope that everyone involved in the show got robbed and abused.
Welcome to our world.
