Is Star Trek better than Doctor Who?

Comments (2)

spock.jpgWho is better? Doctor Who or Captain Kirk? Haryr Hill would make them fight to decide a winner... but we're not Harry Hill. So how to decide? Well, this question has been floating around since time began (aka The Sixties) and now, fans have provided the answer! Of course, I urge anyone who disagrees (or indeed, agrees) to flood our comments box with bile.

Doctor Who is better than Star Trek. Kinda. You see, Doctor Who star David Tennant has beaten Captain Kirk actor, Chris Pine to be crowned Best Actor in the first ever Total Sci-Fi Awards!

Aaah.. you see? It was all a massive ruse to get you to click over the jump!

As voted for by the 100,000 readers of popular website Totalscifionline.com, the award shows how David Tennant has reinvigorated the long-running TV show that was once seen as a joke by many viewers (aka Those who grew up watching Doctor Who in the '80s).

Chris Pine, meanwhile, seems to be struggling to fill the knee-high boots of his predecessor as Captain Kirk, legendary actor and singer William Shatner, with the new boy languishing in second place.

But it's not all good news for Doctor Who, as Tennant has just left the show, passing his sonic screwdriver onto unknown actor, Matt Smith for the show's 31st series in 2010.

Other categories in the Total Sci-Fi Awards included Best TV Show, Best Novel, Best Fantasy Movie and Best Horror Movie... and you can view them all here.

David Tennant was fantastic, but he's not the one who reinvigorated Doctor Who. It was just as successful in its first new series with Christopher Eccleston (and will continue as such with Matt Smith as the Doctor.)
The whole concept behind Doctor Who is what makes it the best. The original series had a difficult time living up to its full potential due to its limited budget. But now that the BBC is funding it properly and treating the show as its flagship drama, the showrunners are better able to reach that potential. Every person involved in making the show - from the actor playing the Doctor to the most obscure off-screen laborer - is who has reinvigorated the show :)

There is no winner – it's a matter of preference. Both are excellent, and both have built up such a wealth of lore that make them more than just another sci-fi franchise. And both have a knack for re-inventing and re-invigorating themselves successfully. I grew up with Star Trek, but then got hooked on Doctor Who.
