midlife christmas.jpgOkay, after last night's Victoria Wood-fest, Christmas Eve sees the Christmas Special proper in Victoria Wood's Midlife Christmas (BBC One, Thursday, 24 December, 9pm). She really is a national treasure isn't she? Along with Julie Walters, the pair have made more great belly laughs that most and yet, somehow, are consistently overlooked in the annals of great comics. Maybe it's because they never went to Oxbridge universities?

Anyway, Wood and her chums tackle the Christmas Spesh and lampoon Lark Rise to Candleford with the cheekily titled Lark Pies to Cranchesterford.

What we'll get is the touching story of young Araminty, who leaves her rural idyll for a job in the Post and Potato Office. Midlife Christmas promises to be a hoot treat for anyone who thinks Wood has been away from our screens for far too long.

It's not just period dramas she's poking fun at. Wood looks at The Apprentice and takes on Suralan's sidekick Margaret Mountford and also allows us to revisit Bo Beaumont (Julie Walters), the pretentious actress who plays Mrs Overall in Acorn Antiques.

Guests include Delia Smith, Torvill and Dean, Anton du Beke and Reece Shearsmith.

It should be a wonderful and gentle romp with some good giggles to be had.
