Wow. What a strange year. A recession blighted our fair isle and we all got a case of the weirds. We all huddled around our TVs and watched the oddest shows ever broadcast... all the while, TV Scoop went through a weird time. Yep, we were hit by the credit crunch as well.
Hopefully, the strange days are over for us and we can get back to full steam in the new year. The nice looking redesign points to something better for us and, providing TV remains as gloriously odd in 2010, there's no reason why it shouldn't be a case of onwards and upwards.
Y'see, 2009 was the year of the celebrity death. Everyone seemed to be dropping like flies and TV played a big role in the strangeness of it all. Michael Jackson's funeral remains the most bizarre thing ever broadcast. The subsequent seance undertook by Derek Acorah made the whole scenario even weirder, leaving me banging my head against the screen feeling like I'd completely lost my marbles.
In addition to that, we were given the dubious treat of being a fly on Jade Goody's cadaver, witnessing each dying breath she took. Of everything shown on the box in 2009, that was probably the lowest point.
That's a staggering feat in itself, especially when you consider that 2009 was the year we saw Gary Glitter getting executed. Of course, it was a fictional portrayal, but it was passed of as facts from the future. This left viewers actually stunned at what TV can throw at you sometimes.
Big Brother had a throw of the dice, which failed, and now leaves us with some more episodes before it buggers off forever, never to darken our doorsteps ever again. That said, to assume another channel won't buy it and revive it is rather dim. Someone, somewhere, will want to film people adjusting their nutsacks and arguing over eggs.
It's not all been bad though. Psychoville was a massive triumph and featured some of the sharpest writing seen in years. In fact, I'd argue that it was the best show of 2009. Maxine Peake's performance in Criminal Justice is, without doubt, the performance of the year and here's to hoping we see a lot more of her in 2010.
So that's it. All that's left now is to wait for Doctor Who to change into a different actor and wish you the very best for Christmas and a splendid New Year!
