Yesterday, I was reading about this ballet thing that the BBC were going to show over Christmas. I'd link you to it but it was one of those irritating Paid Content Only things that we trade-types get for free. Anyway, the Beeb have decided to nix it because... well... let's just say it was a little bit more controversial than The Jerry Springer Opera.
BBC Four was due to show Eternal Damnation to Sancho and Sanchez by Javier de Frutos in a pre-watershed slot over the Christmas period. Nothing wrong with that so far, right?
Well. There's a scene in it where a hunchback Pope garrotting a pregnant woman with rosary beads... oh... and then he rapes a nun. Oh, then an altar boy gets abused. Imagine the letters that would've hit Television House if they'd shown that. AND PRE-WATERSHED!
There's a part of me that almost wishes they would.
A BBC spokesman said: "When we announced we were showing it, at the time we weren't fully aware of the details of the ballet and had every intention of showing all four acts. Basically, the material isn't suitable for a pre-watershed broadcast."
You don't say.
