A clearly weary world can trudge toward Masterchef The Professionals (BBC Two, Thursday, 22 October, 8pm) in a show that’s fast becoming a parody of itself. The shouting, the ear-imploding rave, the thumb-screw pressure applied to sweaty cooks and Gregg Wallace’s sweet tooth… they’re all there, all present and correct and… well… exactly as you left them.
However, instead of giving the original thrill of The New Masterchef (which means, post Grossman), it all feels a bit forced these days. The only people left watching this show are clearly brain-damaged by the show itself, clots rattling around the skull-putty from the sheer volume and tension of the whole thing.
Sadly, the general public have disappeared from the show, leaving us to invest in a bunch of people who either don’t need the exposure or who already have jobs in professional kitchens. Thereby, it takes away the very reason for the show.
Thursday sees the final, in which the last three contestants will be producing a meal for 30 of the world’s top chefs. Gregg, lovely as he is, will be on hand to go guttural over dishes and Michel Roux Jr will, as ever, stand limp with his even head-fuzz with all the charisma of a mop.
Hopefully, the amateurs will be back soon so the excitement can begin again.
