The closest thing we’ve had to Caribbean food on TV has been Ainsley Harriot gurning over a hob and bulging his eyeballs over a bit of Percy. He’s pure nonsense. He’s also a bit Children’s Entertainer as opposed to real deal, roots-fi cookery. So step forward Levi Roots, star of Dragons Den who pisses charisma, in new food show Caribbean Food Made Easy (BBC Two, Monday, 24 August, 8.30pm). And what a welcome addition to the schedule it is.

It’s ludicrous that Caribbean food hasn’t made the leap to TV in Britain. I mean, Jamaicans have been in Britain as long as any other immigrant and brought colour and flavour to our drab skies.
Indian and Chinese food have both had the Made Easy treatment, with mixed results (the former not so great, the latter, superb). At long last, we now get the secrets of Caribbean cookery and Levi Roots, of Reggae Reggae sauce fame, goes back to Jamaica to offer up food that looked so tasty that my stomach ingested itself.
Back in his hometown village of Content, Levi purrs over the jerk, spices, scotch bonnets, rice and peas and all that good soul food. The best thing about the show is that the food is not only amazing but it looks as easy to make as toast. With any luck, this programme will revolutionise Whitey’s adventures in the kitchen.
The soundtrack of the show is also bang-on throughout, with killer roots reggae cuts and dubs, all dappled in the glorious Caribbean sun. It’s idyllic, it’s fun and welcoming. Ladies and gents, this could well be the best cooking show on the box. One thing is for certain… it’s guaranteed to slap a great smile on yer stupid face and get you hankering for yams and coconut milk. Brilliant telly.

This was one of the best food shows of all times. I hope you bring Levi Roots back to our screens very soon.
