Russell T Davies has said that he wanted to make the Torchwood team less indestructible, and he's certainly done that. At the end of series two, Owen and Tosh were killed of by a nuclear explosion and Jack's brother respectively, and now the government want the remaining 'staff' dead to ensure that there are 'no survivors'.
And at the beginning of this episode, they haven't quite achieved that, but they're well on the way. The bomb placed in Jack's stomach has torn him and Torchwood to pieces, and Gwen and Ianto have gone underground in the hope that they can keep one step ahead of the authorities.
What unfolds for most of the episode is less science fiction (Captain's Jack's astonishing 'regeneration' aside) and more political thriller - lots of walking down corridors and speaking in hushed tones, families' houses stormed in the middle of the night and bugged ATM machines.
And that newbie Lois, we all thought she might just be cleverer than she first appeared, and so it turned out, putting her PA to good use setting up a meeting with Gwen and Rhys and getting them deep inside an army barracks - to find Captain Jack 'confined' in concrete. Which is about as confined you'll get. Thank goodness for Ianto then, yanking the whole thing out with a digger like some monumentally unsubtle bank robber (wearing a helmet though, safety first).
There are a few hints at the more sci-fi-y aspects to come, however. The children have told us that the 456 are coming tomorrow, and for some reason, they're headed straight for Britain, and we're rolling out the red carpet. We've been following their instructions to build them a chamber in which they can breathe! Why would we want to do that for a species that uses kids to send creepy messages? Maybe, just maybe, we'll find out tomorrow...
