Charlie Brooker is in danger of becoming really really famous. For a lot of people, he’s the only reason they read The Guardian. He’s given us Dead Set, Screen Wipe, News Wipe, Nathan Barley… he’s got Games Wipe on the way… but first, newest show, You Have Been Watching (Channel 4, Tuesday, 7 July, 10pm). So what can we expect? Jerking off in a front room whilst swearing at the ceiling? Well… actually… not at all.

This article, and any subsequent review of shows like this, feel like a feedback loop… like when you film a TV screen with a TV screen on it, giving us an endless tunnel of TV screens. Effectively, we’ll have a TV review about a TV show that looks at other TV shows. It’s prolapsed.

However, this show is seemingly more straightforward than previous Brooker outings. As opposed to venting solo spleen with cuts to other offering vicious views on the box, this is Charlie Brooker in mainstream mode, almost in panel show format.

This is Brooker in the presenter chair as opposed to the armchair, with an earpiece and a live studio audience and famous guests coming in to rant about the television and provide us with some laughs. Points will be dished out by Brooker who is perilously close to becoming TV A-list. That’ll annoy a load of his fans won’t it. Brilliant.
