Who Do You Think You Are? (BBC One, Wednesday, 15 July, 9pm) is the kind of show that only the BBC could make. At least, it feels that way when you’re watching. Treading the tricky line of saccharine and investigative perfectly, it’s little wonder that it’s always been a ratings heavyweight when aired. This week, it returns with Davina McCall looking through her back pages and beyond. Intriguingly, she’s off in search of an ancestor that her family has long believed to be the illegitimate son of King George IV. Are we going to see some kind of coronation?

As a series opener, this one is set to be one with a bang as McCall’s ancestry is filled with royal connections, suicide, scandal, money and more. And that’s just on her father’s side of the tree.
You see, McCall’s parents divorced when she was little and she lost touch with her French mother (not the woman referred to in those hair-dye commercials surely?). Tracing her mother’s roots (no pun intended), who died recently, obviously takes on more potency.
As such, she discovers that her great-grandfather was incredibly famous and with each upturned stone, Davina is shocked with eyes growing wider and wider. Of course, there will be emotional moments and tears. I’d miss Dragons Den to watch this as Davina seems a very open person and very down-to-earth… perfect for a show like this.
