wimbledon murray win.jpgWow. Last night's coverage of Wimbledon 2009: Andy Murray versus Stanislas Wawrinka (BBC One, Monday, 29 June, 7pm) may well have gone on for something like 47 hours and shunted all those shows you wanted to watch over to BBC Two, or in some cases, to some suspended animation awaiting defrost, but really, shows just how marvellous the spectacle of sports can be. Last night felt like a real televisual event. The weekend coverage of Glastonbury wasn't a big event, as testified by the forcing of the issue by Mark Radcliffe et al. There'll be a million and one sports reports on the ins-and-outs of the match itself, but what about the TV coverage? Did it keep up?

The star of the coverage was the brand new Centre Court roof. You may well be thinking 'hang on... it's just a roof and a bunch of floodlights'... which of course, is true. That said, if it wasn't for those, last night's match would've been broken up and being finished this morning. This new addition allows for the coverage to continue uninterrupted so that everyone at work today didn't have to miss a single grunt or volley.

However, there were some aspects of the coverage that drove me half mental last night. It seemed that certain camera operators were either pointing their cameras at certain sections of the crowd and then having a snooze or the director was yelling in their ear to keep showing the same people over and over and over and over and over again.

The first lot I noticed who made far too many appearances were the four chaps in the t-shirts that spelled CMON ANDY. The first coupla times I didn't mind all too much... but time and time again, they appeared. Thereby, I starting getting irrational hatred of people.

To make matters worse, the coverage then focused in on one section of the crowd so often that I began to start yelling at the telly. One poetic cry was: "Arrgh! I mean... y'f*ckin'... Union Jack boy! AGAIN! ARRGH!" Anyone who saw the game last night will have seen a young lad in a Union Jack shirt and his Hasidic Jew mate roughly 3,002,851 times during the live coverage. Were they related to someone at the Beeb? Whatever, I went to bed last night with them burned into my retinas.

Another star of the stands was a lady in a red vest top. I didn't mind her half as much thanks to the small matter of the fact that she wasn't being particularly wacky. However, one shot made me feel a bit uneasy. We were treated to a super slo-mo replay of her jumping up and down with her boobies jiggling about. Poor woman. I can only hope she's not too fussed when she sees it back.

Another repeat shot was The One From The Airship. We're used to these in sporting events for sure, but last night, we repeatedly saw London looking incredibly dark, way before it was dark up here in the North. I was very confused indeed. I couldn't decide whether the Beeb had stuck a weird filter on the shot for effect or whether the air pollution in London is so bad that it gets to midnight darkness at around 9pm in summer.

Of course, there were also lingering shots of Murray's mum jumping up and down (very impressively too) and Wawrinka's coaches and all that junk... but I expect that. Sadly, the continual shots of a few almost detracted from the fact that Centre Court holds around 15,000 people, as opposed to the ten we saw in close up.

Sadly, the coverage finished with the most pointless and idiotic of TV inventions: The Post Match 'How Do You Feel?' Interview. That question is so inert and redundant that it always makes for a boring few minutes. The answer is always a flat 'elated' or 'thrilled' with a weary nod to the crowd for cheap applause. I was almost willing Andy Murray to snipe 'I'm f*cking exhausted... what do you think, you d*ck!'

That said, away from these gripes, the coverage of the match itself was excellent and the fact that we had unbroken play saw the excitement snowballing and the tension climbing like vines up my legs. It was sensational TV and I'd be incredibly surprised if there's a TV set in Britain that didn't tune in at some point last night. A wonderful event for which we should be grateful that TV got us the best seats in the house.

This is the best article ever...Everything in it is so true...i think everyone was thinking about the Jewish Kid...Was it a hat with the hair glued in, or was it real??

I personally didn't mind the slow-mo replay of the woman jumping :P lol

I think they just concentrated on the same people as they were the most energetic in the crowd, making it look as though everyone in the stadium was like that.

I'm not ashamed to admit that I too, didn't mind the slow motion replay of the jumping woman, does anyone know where I can find a clip of it?? :P

Does anyone know where i can get a copy of the complete match? Apparently the beeb liked to zoom in on my weather beaten noggin also. Apologies Mofgimmers for the apparent continual broadcast of myself, I hope my nose didn't haunt you. Great game, top venue, worth the camp-out, see you next year!
