Springwatch Watch: Chris Packham loves Morrissey…

Chris_Packham@body.jpgI was just settling down to the inevitable rout that is tonight’s football match, pondering what gem of a post to add to this newly-commentable site, when I remembered a little conversation I had on Twitter last night with Tony Gardner – he of Lead Balloon and the brilliant My Parents Are Aliens. Well, a rather one-sided conversation, admittedly, but we were tweeting about the same thing at the same time and that’s close enough.

I was watching Springwatch, as is my wont on a Tuesday, with one eye on Twitter, as is my wont every waking hour these days, and while I was of course enjoying the usual mix of stunning scenery, enthusiasm, ahh-factor and low-level smut, I could feel there was something weird going on. Had Kate done something different with her hair? Nope. Was Simon doing an even more bizarre visual explanation of animal behaviour than usual? Well yes (hammering into some slate rather than sticking pencils in his mouth this time) but that wasn’t it.

But Gardner had it – Chris was using some rather odd phrases. Phrases that just didn’t sit quite right, but on which he was clearly putting some emphasis. Those phrases were the titles of Morrissey and Smiths singles: Oscillate Wildly, This Charming Man and – quite impressively – Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me were all slipped into conversation. But look! You can comment again now! So why not tell us the ones we missed…

While you’re thinking back, here’s the Springwatch Unsprung from last night for you to savour:
