The League of Gentlemen’s Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton have teamed up again to write… and star in… a new comedy show. Like The League of Gentlemen, their minds have been drawn to the weird, black comedy that’s so unsettling that you wondered why you laughed in the first place. The new show, ladies and gentlemen, is the appropriately titled Psychoville (BBC Two, Thursday, 18 June, 10pm). Now, the last series of League of Gentlemen was ambitious, disparate and tied together slowly at the close, revealing a weird link between each strand of story. It certainly seems that Psychoville will be going down the same route, which means that viewers are advised to strap in for the ride and stick it out for the long haul, even if they initially don’t have a clue what’s going on.
The show begins with a bunch of wax-sealed letters sent out to the characters of the show, marked with the chilling words: “I know what you did”.
Of course, we’ll have absolutely no idea what it is they did in this first episode and it would invariably be foolish to try and second guess the warped minds of the show’s creators.
So who gets the letters? Well, there’s mental midwife played by Dawn French, a telekinetic dwarf, Mr Jelly (played by Shearsmith) and more.
Naturally, the ray gun of this show will be set to ‘AARGHAHAHA – eh?’, which will be most welcome for those of us who have been yearning for some comedy from the darkest recesses of the human mind. Let’s hope it lives up to the hype!
